This game has a bit of everything. A trip to the Final Four on the line. Bob Knight flipping out after getting a random technical foul, then slamming his fist on the scorer's table. IU sleepwalking to a 12-point deficit against an 11th seeded LSU team. Ricky Calloway going down with a knee injury, then coming back a few minutes later, then blowing a monster dunk attempt. And then Dale Brown coaching the last five minutes with both hands around his neck.
There are some great old 1980s TV commercials in the second half of this one.

@GalenClavio I am so thankful to be able to see this game again. These are special memories. Thanks to you I can relive thm again the way they were broadcast even when they unfortunately involve Billy Packer. lol

Unlike most of the old arenas these long-ago games were played in, Riverfront Coliseum in Cincinnati is still standing today, now known as the Heritage Bank Center. I went there in 2015 and it was like walking into a time warp - instantly transported back to the 1970s.

Down 9 with 4min30secs or so to go, IU cut the lead to only 2 with 3mins to play. Yet, it took nearly that entire time to take the lead, with some agonizing moments along the way.

LSU gave this game away to Indiana in the final five minutes of the game. Dale Brown made the mistake of spreading the floor hoping Indiana would gamble defensively and get easy baskets to Nikka Wilson. This took their aggressiveness away on offense in playing conservative and Indiana stayed disciplined on defense. There was a questionable foul on Keith Smart around 40 seconds in regulation that allowed him to the free throw line. But there's no excuse. Dale Brown deserves a majority of the blame for this heartbreaking loss and never recovered from it.

Yep, this game posed match up problems for IU and it proved to be the most difficult on their run to the championship. That said, if LSU had won not sure they would've matched up well with UNLV.

Yup my dad as IU fans we said that for years Brown lost it cause if he kept his foot on the gas IU had no shot.

The clock at the buzzer actually had expired with the ball still in Nikita Wilson's hands. We will never know if the shot would have counted if it had gone in.

You are right………it was still in his hands but in 1987, it would have counted as the refs ruled in real time it was shot in time. Today, if ruled good, it would have been overturned on replay. LSU couldn’t have asked for a better shot than the one Nikita missed.

Knight just owned Dale Brown, poor guy couldn’t beat him. EVERY no-hitter in baseball, every championship run etc has a fortunate win, a lucky moment. This was it for Indiana. Easily could’ve and should’ve lost this game. Calloway doesn’t even finish a Hoosier? I always thought that was unfortunate but glad to see him still love and loved by Indiana U., evidenced by his return for the anniversary of this team and his reception there.

Never realized just how lucky Indiana was this year: Winning the big 10 last game of the year & needing a Purdue loss just to get a 1 seed. Then this game LSU had them & choked. Then Syracuse had them & choked.

The Great Escape...Really good foreshadowing by Packer at 59:46...If you just want to see the comeback :-), the nadir is reached soon after 1:07:26 ... About as happy as you'll ever see any Hoosiers on-camera 1:37:59...

Knight always preserves as many time outs as possible for use in a game such as this. The calling of several timeouts in a row puts the opponent in a very uncomfortable position, essentially “icing” their foe.

Like Coach Knight said, after looking at Shaquille O’Neal and all the other ones dunking in warm-ups, when I looked down on their bench, and I saw a Dale Brown, I knew we had a chance…😂😂😂

I enjoy this game only because of Brent Musberger
@walterlv01
@walterlv01 3 года назад
Even though Brent became more famous for college football during the second half of his career, IMO he was always one of the best college basketball announcers ever. Also love how he had no fear interviewing Knight at the end "you deserved that technical..." "NO I DIDN'T" "yeah, you did."
@patrickgray5633

@@walterlv01 I love Knight & always liked Brent but how did he know Knight deserved it he didn’t know what was said to make Knight react that way. Thats question that needed to be answered what was the explanation to given to Bob Knight????? No matter if you agree or not a player or coach always deserves a explanation from a referee. Not getting one & you know that happens is simply not acceptable.
