On April 4, 1968, Robert F. Kennedy announced the death of Martin Luther King, Jr. to a majority-black crowd in an Indianapolis park. His impromptu speech is regarded as one of the most powerful and important addresses in American history.
Kennedy's speech - equal parts eulogy and call for peace - came as America was erupting into violence. Because of his message of compassion, the crowd in Indianapolis returned home peacefully. As cities across America burned, Indianapolis remained peaceful.

And, in this speech, he didn't pander to any particular group. That would have caused division like we're seeing today. He spoke to all of us about our common humanity. I was there, with my parents that night and I can tell you that what could have been really scary, wasn't, because one man rose above what divides us and spoke to us as fellow human beings.

He was once asked by a wealthy middle class student “Mr Kennedy, all these plans of yours are great but who is going to pay for them?” You know what Kennedy replied “You are”. Didn’t pull punches- spoke the truth at all times in his presidential campaign. His death was an appalling disaster for all mankind.

Note: Robert Kennedy rarely ever spoke of his brother's murder. Let alone publicly. To open up his heart to reveal such a grievous wound to the public was such an out stretch of compassion and symphony for his fellow Americans, that Indianapolis was one the few cities, but the largest if them, to NOT riot that night in 1968. Sadly he would die months later in the hands of a kitchen worker in by a gunman. He'd pass on with a Rosery in his hand given to him by that same employee who caressed him as he succumbed to his wounds. Joining a long list of Americans that became the martyrs of Civil Rights and Freedom.

I still get emotional when I hear this speech. Only Bobby Kennedy could have been able to put into words that would comfort people. I remember when I woke up to find out the results of the California primary. They said Bobby won, but then they said he was shot. I started screaming so loud that it woke up my parents. I collapsed on my bedroom floor. I had met Bobby when he ran for Senate and campaigned for him in the presidential primary in 1968. I was emotionally destroyed by his death. I don’t think I ever recovered. Nothing would ever be the same. This speech reminds us of what we lost when Bobby was assassinated. I know that I was never the same.

That's a little dramatic to fall on the floor for a politician's death. Even a good one like him. Word of advice. You shouldn't ever be so dedicated to a politician. Of course, he had to improvise that speech on the spot, very impressive! Can you imagine the great progress we would have made under 8 years of his leadership! Just too much evil, greed, and racism to allow that to happen! And it’s worst now! I still believe the majority of people in this country want to see the American dream of equal justice and liberty for everyone in this country and every human being on the planet! That’s what Gandhi, MLK, JFK, RFK, Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, and so many more have been trying to teach us all: We Must Stand Together!!! Knowledge is power, only if you have the courage and integrity to act on it! We Must Stand Together!!!

@JohnnyBaboons
@JohnnyBaboons Год назад
12 years ago I found my older brothers cold body and hugged him as i cried tears unto his cold blue face.. It left me angry. Very angry.. i felt so wronged that the world I always knew was now gone forever, and I had just lost my closest friend and a mentor who guided me throughout my whole life up until that moment. And after i had lost my older brother.. I lost myself. And who I used to be melted away into a cold angry vindictive person I no longer recognized nor did anyone else. I felt was an Injustice and I held onto that rotting burning anger to the point it only hurt those I still cared for. And it took me many years to let go of that Hate that I buried deep within... but I did eventually learn to let go of it and choose Love over the Hatred. It was always a choice.. It was the most freeing experience of my life as i opened up and began to actively CHOOSE my path again, I finally began to know real Freedom. So I hope you understand that RFK's speech here makes me shed some real tears. I felt his pain and understood his strength in that devastating moment in US history. Maybe this speech doesn't make some of you feel anything as a citizen of the United States, and that's too bad and very sad.. I wish ya a chance to one day find a way to let go of all that anger that poisons your spirit. Perhaps life has hurt your spirit in a way that you think there is no return from? No light at the end of that dark tunnel.. I get it. but I hope that is not your truth and not the ending to your ride. Trust what RFK is speaking of here in this speech. I hope you rise again with a stronger spirit for the road ahead. ❤️‍🩹 What an amazing speech in such a low moment. ❤️‍🔥

Obama could have been one of the greatest presidents in history if he actually worked to unite the country. Instead, he chose to rip us apart. He could have encouraged black people to strive for greatness. He could have made it cool to succeed and be a good citizen. Instead, he decided to convince them that they are victims, powerless in a society that hates them, and that they should live in fear and bitterness. He’s one of the best orators I’ve ever seen in my life. Truly an amazing speaker. He chose to use this gift to set black people back and divide this country on racial lines. Almost no one truly cared that Obama was black. They cared that he ran with the victim narrative. And when people tried to call him out on it, they were just smeared as racists. Really tough to watch the country go down that path.

@@stevem437 Read the the book The Long Southern Strategy. #2 Understand the whole picture of history from the black man. 10 southern slave owning Presidents that served over a 89 yr time period . Which would lead the 16th President to his death not able to win the hearts and minds of the South . That caused from 1865 till 1965 a larger rift within this nation . From 1965 till today . Its a large picture like looking at the cover of a box with a complete puzzle , yet within that box is 1000 pieces . Obama knew what was within that box , piece by piece . I have worked within black neighborhoods for over 15 yrs out of 35 , seeing up close no one can witness why a quick drive by or drive around that neighborhood . All men are created equal was wrote by a slave owner . And those words did not exist in law or practice till 1964 , 1965, and even with laws in place , people like yourself only see 1 single piece of todays puzzle . Open the box from the puzzle of this Nations past , to see clearly the whole picture .

When people speak of American history, it is often negative. I think this aspect should be shown more - not in the sense of forgetting the bad, but remembering the hope.
