Even though the Colts won the Super Bowl in 2006, I believe their 2005 team was the best team in the Peyton Manning era. This was the year Manning didn't have to be Superman and throw 40+ touchdowns and 4000+ yards, he was still a first team all pro that year but he relied on the ground game with Edgerrin James being a workhorse. Harrison and Wayne still got over 1000 yards receiving, the offensive line was one of the best in the league, their defense was really, really good this year. Bob Sanders was the biggest difference maker that year, all pro safety plus Dwight Freeney being an all pro DE. Dungy's son losing his life near the end of the season derailed what would've been a Super Bowl team, the whole team just lost the vibe after the 13-0 start. The playoff game against Pittsburgh was a huge punch in the gut. Everything that could've gone wrong, did. Vandergjat shanking that potential field goal to tie was just unforgivable. What made this a lost opportunity was this was Edggerin James last season with the Colts as he left for the Cardinals in free agency.

Shame how that playoff game went. This was the best team Manning had in Indianapolis prior to his injury in 2006. His line was better than in any other season, Edge was still Edge (and had a good backup), Wayne had developed from raw talent into legit complement to Harrison, both Dallas and Brandon were owning the slot, Fletcher was solid, Manning had learned to become patient, and most importantly, the defense was only giving up 13.5 points per game. Furthermore, Vanderjagt was the highest percentage field goal kicker of all-time at that point (though he suddenly forgot how in the playoff game). I still say Dungy NEVER should have rested the starters until they had the games won.

Tony Dungy was Jack Del Rio 's defensive coordinator in Minnesota.

Really sucks how that playoff game against Pittsburgh went, because this Colts team was the best one Manning had before his injury. I mean, the 2009 one rolled through a lot of the season as well, but he was already hurting at that point, and Caldwell was no Dungy. This team should have gotten a Super Bowl for sure. Edge was still at his best, Manning learned to be patient, Wayne had become a fully developed threat, Clark and Stokely working the slot, this was the best line Manning had, the defense was holding teams to less than 14 points per game... I still think resting the players at the end of the season was a mistake.
