Indians in Dubai: Luxury & Labour Camps

Dubai is a city of extreme contrast, from the luxurious living of the rich to the labour camps of the labourers. So I take you out to explore both! I'll show you how the rich live in their amazing 7-star resort-type housing developments, and then we go see how the Indian and Pakistani labourers are residing in their labour camps.
We start in a luxury housing development in Dubai, United Arab Emirates which has everything you could ever want! Pools, gyms, gardens, clean, wide streets, an animal sanctuary, dog park, horse stable, mall, restaurants, supermarket, mosque and more! It's unbelievable, and I've never seen such luxury like it in my life. These people truly are living the high life in Dubai.
Then we head out to an Indian labour camp area. These are the men who are literally building Dubai and all these housing developments we just saw. The labourers in Dubai aren't living like the rich here. They live a basic life in dorm/hostel-type apartments, 4 men in a room with two bunk beds for them to sleep on. These men are busy working hard to remit money back to their families in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.
We spend the afternoon at the mall next to the labour camp where the labourers are hanging out and waiting for work. Most of the labourers are Indians, Pakistanis, and Bangladeshis. We drink 1 dirham (20 rs.) Masala Chai with them and get an Indian facial and head massage from a hairdresser from Meerut, India. Products and services in the labourer camp mall are very very cheap. So cheap, in fact, they're the same price as in India! I did not expect this! Dubai is known for being a costly city!
Dubai, indeed, is the City of Gold, and nothing can beat the glitz, glamour, and money there. But it's a city of contrasts, and often the lives of poorer people are hidden. For example, I was not allowed to film inside the rooms of the labour camp as permission was needed from the Labour Camp supervisor. The workers were too scared to simply show me inside their room without his consent, lest they get in trouble, lose their jobs, and get deported.
In this video, you'll see the lifestyle of the wealthy highly-paid highly-skilled Indians and the lifestyle of the poorer lowly-paid lowly-skilled Indians. It's quite a contrast!

For the longest time, Dubai was one of my dream destinations. When I finally had the opportunity to visit a friend that transferred to Dubai on the Palm Jumeriah (one of the most luxurious housing developments) I quickly realized how "artificial" everything is. I recently visited India and it was so much more interesting and culturally stimulating. I much rather sit on a dirt floor in a village in India than swim in a luxury condo pool in Dubai.

I’ve lived in the UAE (an expat), more specifically, in Abu Dhabi, my whole life. When you take into consideration all factors such as quality of life, low taxation, cleanliness, education and prices of goods being relatively cheap to other countries, along with the good pay, the UAE isn’t actually to expensive to live in, it’s just some people go above and beyond in terms of spending, probably not saving much to live the extravagantly lavish life that the media portrays about the UAE. But this country is amazing to live in, even a s a foreigner.

The issue is that these low paid foreign workers sometimes get abused in the way that they don't get paid for many many months, and if they're the sole earner in the family - then they cant send anything back home either. Some literally go crazy out of frustration and stress and it impacts their health. They cant even get tier passports back until their employer sees it fit to give it back.

This is really good content, Karl. You summed up a lot on expat and labourer life in Dubai. I'm Saudi and have been living here for 17 years. Back in 2013 I was working with some non-profit organizations aiming to help improve conditions at labor accommodation. There's been a lot of improvement, but still a long way to go in my view. Regarding the locals, they do exist in Dubai, but they have certain areas that are somewhat disconnected with the expat world, the luxury accommodation, the skyscrapers, etc. It's a completely segregated community. Largely because locals have different norms from expats and like to keep to themselves. I wasn't a big part of that community until I married an Emirati woman. I think you would find it very interesting to meet up with these people - very humble, relaxed, funny, and just nice people. There are some that tend to be flashy and show off their nice cars and luxuries, but the largest group of Emiratis go to work like everyone else, but always put family first - definitely above career ambitions. And trust me, all of us Khalijis/Emiratis go for our 1.5 dirham tea (used to be a dirham, but prices went up in 2020). If you ever come back to Dubai, me and the family would love to show you around these areas and introduce you to the Dubai locals - a very different group than Abu Dhabi/Al Ain or Ras Al Khaima locals.

I'm an Indian and I just feel that in a very surprising and unexpected way you represent India. This country has many faces and you are one of them. I feel cozy and relaxed every time I watch your videos. Sometime I let them play in the background while I'm working. I believe, every human being has so many stories to tell - we all are part of so many different stories at the same time. And environment, people we meet, places we visit, people we fall in love with, people we fall out of love with shape our stories. I believe India has influenced you in many ways and in many ways India has also been influenced by you. Please keep it up. If there's a God, may She bless you.

Yes, you are absolutely true. As a teenager living in Dubai for 3 years, I have noticed that there is no cultural mix of people here. There is no community. Mallu's make up their community and friends and don't mingle with others, while in India it is different. I have lived in Bangalore for almost 10 years and being it a cosmopolitan city, the people talk and make friends with each other. I am a Bengali and found out some good friends last year that too Bengalis. As a teenager I have noticed my parents mostly my dad complaining about his job security. We were brought here by false hope by the company. And now finally we are moving out of Dubai, and I am happy. Not happy at all as I am leaving my close friends. We are moving even though the salary is lesser and we have to pay taxes in Amsterdam. Dubai is a good place for visit but not worth living. They will make you greedy by the salary offers, but you won't have any job opportunities. Only business flourish here and nothing here. Everything is 3 times costlier then Bangalore ( India's costliest city) Water, Electricity, Entertainment is very costly here. As a family of four ( two parents and two children) the average costs of water bills, electricity bills, entertainment and telephone bills total of ₹40000-50000 per month. You can still make savings but you will have the same lifestyle. Go to school/office go home,eat,study/work,sleep. That's the life cycle here. While in India you have festivals were everyone celebrates. We have some Christians that celebrate holi and diwali in India and I have witnessed it. There is nothing here,but greed and money. They don't allow you to show the inside part of the labour camps because they don't want to reveal the world the "inside the scenes"

@@danischannel He is very much right about what he said. May be not all Mallu's are like that but he is speaking about the majority of them. This was one of the main reasons of me leaving middle East. Always felt alone and secluded from others during my stay there. Whenever I tried to gel with any Mallu's I was always ignored just because I cannot speak Malayali. Infact, even in work I had to face discrimination because of not knowing Malayali language.
@nikkikamar6682
@nikkikamar6682 5 лет назад
@@asifrocksful1 These mallus are not bad ppl,in fact they are very helpful and friendly but their problem is the language,thatsy they feel comfortable with their own ppl.I know this coz I have a neighbor and honestly speaking she is very nice lady but she neither knows Hindi nor English,so how will she mingle with us Hindi speaking ppl,when ever she came to my place she had to bring her 5 yrs old son to communicate coz he knows English. Don't assume anything about anyone.
@asifrocksful1
@asifrocksful1 5 лет назад
@@nikkikamar6682 I am not assuming anything. I am telling you what I have experienced in middle East. I have many friends who are Mallu's back in India and they are wonderful people as well. But my experience with the Mallu's in the middle East has been very disappointing. May be since middle East has so much money they show their true colour their. I am not generalising. It is solely based on my personal experience along with many others who are non Mallu's in middle East. In middle East Mallu's pretend to be someone who is not from India and represent themselves as some different community. But according to me one should always first represent his country especially when he or she is outside his country. After that only he should think about the state.
