My father and I were adversaries for many years.. Then as his lifetime began to dwindle, a lot of the past came out that needed to be spoken about..... the most important thing from me was, please dont leave me, I cant do this without you.. so true. I wish I still had my hard ass no excuses father... I dont feel loved anymore.. xo

I served in the US military for 30 years, and my father for 29 years, and my father-in-law for 22 years. I love these reactions, but, for many of us, this isn't how it is. Our families were accustomed to separations, it was just part of our lives. We were apart for many, many birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, births, graduations, funerals, etc., but this was just part of what it meant to be a military family. I was apart from my family innumerable times for days, weeks, months, but it was just part of what it meant to be a military family--we all just understood and accepted it. I can't recall a single time in my 30 years where my return from an extended duty was any different from just coming home from a normal day at work for most other people. I admit I envy those who received such tumultuous and joyous reunions, and I’m very happy for them-but we were a military family, and we all just knew what that meant--that's just the way it was.
