I’m 43 and loved twee. The fun part about being older is that you have lived through multiple revivals of styles and know you should just wear what you like when you like and what makes your body feel good.

The whole point of Clementine was that she was not a manic pixie dream girl. She has her own issues and she doesn't exist to fix the male counterpart's. I had trouble watching the rest of the video after this.

I think another icon of twee was Clara from doctor who. Love this video. Hopefully if the trend comes around it will be more positive

I like the indie twee aesthetic--the look of it, the way it celebrates sensitivity and quirkiness--but I'm all for including better representation in it and de-coupling it from the manic pixie dream girl/replacing the current iteration of the MPDG with more sensitive, caring, quirky people of all races, body types, neurotypes, sexual orientations, and gender identities who are there for their partner, help them grow, but whose baggage and struggles are also equally present in the narrative. That shouldn't be a hard tweak to make if you're committed to it.

I'm loving all the clips from God Help The Girl here. It's definitely one of my favourite films. I was into the whole Sarah Records thing in the 90s and there was something called cutie culture that was connected with that which I guess was kind of a forerunner for twee. It certainly had a lot of twee elements to it. I'm 53 now and still enjoy the aesthetic but kind of wondering at what point does one get too old?

Another lovely video. During the height of this I was in high school & Uni and was very much in this subculture. I have always shopped at second hand or vintage store because of my parents style rubbing off(80’s hair band groupie rejects as I call them) but as I was overweight it was hard to find things. Not till I lost a lot of weight(not the right way) did I start actually meeting people who liked similar things cause i had the outward signifiers I like them too. I actually still have a lot of the same clothes from then and still wear it. My style hasn’t changed much hell i still have medium length hair with layers & fringe. My hs & Uni were enveloped in similar sub cultures because high school was a performing & visual arts school downtown in a major US city & my Uni was a top theatre school (BFA program) and a really good music production program. I did get a lot of crap with the music I liked from my Spanish, Portuguese & Latin side of the family & well as in HS people saying “your people like this”. Uni was a bit better being farther away but also because I had lost the weight & I am lighter skinned bc I am mixed & can pass in places with less diversity. On another note I love God Help The Girl so much. I wish more people would watch it. I adore Belle & Sebastian so much and followed the musical then the making of the movie. It played a limited run in town but I was there. Everyone needs to check out the Belle and Sebastian comic book! Amazing!

Thank you for sharing your experience here Lily 💙 especially as parts of it sound very hard for you. An interesting perspective that this subculture was quite mainstream at your educational institutions, that definitely didn't feel like the case for me! Your parents style sounds absolutely amazing though 😍 I didn't know Belle & Sebastien ever did a comic, I'll be sure to check it out!

Thank you for watching Josie! Sadly, this lack of inclusivity was glaringly obvious as I was finding source materials. If it makes a comeback, it has to do better!

Wow really good video. I suppose I am a bit the product of the indie twee scene. I've always loved Wes Anderson movies and was a big fan of the music scene. The band "Stars" I guess was indie twee and I didn't even know it. Most interestingly I'm most attracted to girls that fit that vibe: young, cute, petite, perhaps goofy but with an interested and deep personality. (Plus im a middle child) I now wonder if maybe I was influenced by the scene during my adolescents or maybe the opposite and I naturally gravitated to this scene because that's what I already liked... Did I say great video?
