They were kicked off their land, put in residential schools, they were beat, killed, sexually assaulted, emotionally and physically abused, that’s not even all of it. I completely understand their anger. The government continues to do nothing, they don’t even have clean water in some reserves. @@jackienikora259 and then us white people will say dumb stuff like "well the indigenous people of North America immigrated too!" Well, yes, that might be true but 1) there was nobody here beforehand, nothing was stolen. Nothing was annexed. Nobody had to die or relocate because somebody else wanted what they had... 2) they didn't even treat the local wildlife and plants as badly as we treated them, and still treat them to this day.. not even close. An entire continent of people taking care of the earth and being grateful for what they were given, and we tried so hard to destroy that... I wonder if it was partially because their culture showed us how disgusting ours was and we didn't want to hear it so we tried to silence it because money and influence seemed more important than guilt and positive change. It is painful that even in these comments people are bringing up the 'savage' idea too!! How is it savage to live with the land, and protect the resources that have been keeping you alive for generations? How ISN'T it savage to clear cut entire forests and basically leach all the resources you can possibly manage, just to make a dollar? I'm from Canada, as white as it gets, & I get very upset about this kind of stuff ... When England showed up in Canada, everyone gathered around to cure some scurvy, give everyone a nice warm place to sleep, check up on everyone and administer first aid and medicine and anything needed.. Most people during that era who had yet to be contacted by the rest of the world would have reacted with more hostility, and that's perfectly understandable especially when y'all can't speak eachothers language. Nobody owed us anything, and yet they still brewed us cedar tea and shared their tobacco.. I really wish we could have experienced a north America that was on their terms, not colonialist terms!! Things would be so different, I imagine we would have more ethical standards for companies and factories, our government priorities would be different too.. I'd honestly love to see a well respected elder become Prime Minister, or President, they would hold these countries to a higher standard than others have in the past and I think that would be well needed at this point. Sorry for such a long ranty post, it just really bothers me as a whole.. I love the energy these women are bringing to the table, I just really wish more people could appreciate them and their multi-generational struggle as a whole..

Everyone taking sides with the reporters needs to understand: These reporters only came to ask these questions because they want to hear from these indigenous people "There is no more racism and bias against indigenous people as there was during Harper, because Trudeau is in power now, and all is better because of him". Listen, the reporters don't care about Indegenous rights, they care about making it look like everything is fine, all to improve Trudeau's public appearance. When the reporter asked "Most Canadians think Trudeau's making an effort" and the young woman replies (paraphrase) "Many boys are going missing in Thunder Bay; There is white supremacy in Thunder Bay", the reporter backpedaled her now-debunked question by saying "[Trudeau] can't be blamed for that" as if to say that Trudeau bears no responsibility when he in fact promised during the camaign that he would pay special attention to (or in the reporter's words in the video "making an effort to [resolve]") Indigenous disappearances. That is an absolute disregard to that young woman's response because she showed that what most Canadians believe about Indigenous life is a false belief, debunking the reporter's statement, and the reporter just ignores it. These people are right to be angry at the corporate media, because they have been hearing the same ignorance and defence for the government's inaction on this issue for centuries, and they're sick of it.

That has nothing to do with the fact that she's a white reporter though, and that makes the woman racist and unaware of how to communicate properly for the sake of her own people. A brown or black person could have asked the exact same question the white lady did, poc people ask questions like that all the time. Why is she berating people by saying there was no 'healing journey'? Even if you have the right to be mad, your lack of communication skills is still a problem. She could have answered the question and been mad later, but instead, she shut down that entire conference, and that only hurts the people who're actually disappearing, so that makes these people selfish.
@N9olan
@N9olan 5 лет назад
@@necromancerdancer1480 That's right a "black" or "brown" person could have asked the same question... ... ...but they did not... ...So it's not a lack of communication, it's that the reporter chose to prioritize "comfort" instead of acknowledging the truth of "white" supremacy there. Unfortunately that is a major problem with many Canadians and what they think about indigenous life there and how they respond to it. Her complexion is not the issue, her willful ignorance by which she disregarded the truth is the issue and the speakers/hosts were right to disregard the comfort of those reporters and admonish/scold them so you must also recognize that because you are doing the same as those reporters-people are dying and you only pay attention to how they scolded you instead of how disrespectful those reporters were in their disregard for the truth-the reporter who disregarded the truth and the other reporter who rushed to the comfort of the reporter being scolded...shame!

The initial plan was actually meant to give indigenous Canadians access to the same level of education as the rest of the country but it turned into something else. Instead of the schools being an option for native kids, they became mandatory. Many of the schools were very, very far from their homes so kids were cut off from their families, and culture. Instead of providing a solid education, the schools focused on "assimilating" Indigenous Canadians by forbidding them to speak their language, wear their clothes, or do anything that wasnt traditionally British or Christian. The government's stated goal was to "Kill the Indian in the child Also, the schools were riddled with abusers who assaulted kids in a variety of ways. Their so called "act of kindness" in giving the Indigenous community money is so that they can spend the money on drugs and alcohol so that they'd die faster and setting their community into a bigger issue; the government already knows that, yet they still insist on doing this. Don't be saying to me, "well that's their own fault." Clearly it's not, look at how they are still being treated in todays' society. Look at the lack of support they receive on their OWN LAND. Rather than giving them "money" indirectly doing more harm than good, why don't they spend the money on a better healthcare system specifically for the Indigenous communities, clean water on the reserves and REAL things that can actually benefit these people. All I hear is excuses from the government. 99% of the children (like ALL children in those days) died of disease. Living in close-quarters probably didn't help though. When they say a person lived to an average age of 40 in those days, they aren't talking about all people's lifespans averaged. The average person who survived past age 5 lived into their 60's and 70's, but so many children in the 1800's and early 1900's died of disease before age 6 that it skews the average death age.

Second of all, indigenous peoples are getting white people frustrated and annoyed for asking for equality and an apology for all the generational trauma and pain that they caused? It sounds like your implying that white people are not in the wrong and we did this ourselves. All we're asking for is that white people acknowledge what they've done and fix it. Read and learn, Racism is the oppression of a marginalized group that is based on White supremacy. This is basically saying that if you are white, you benefit in society because of your white privilege. An oppressed person or group of people cannot be racist and I am far from your definition of a moron.

VanDozen, the reporter that asked the question that led to the "you Whites" finger point, meant no insult, obviously. But her question and the protester's response speaks perfectly to why Aboriginals and the rest of Canada speak past each other when reperations and respect are in debate. The gathered media, and most Canadians for that matter, look at the Aboriginal condition within the context of the last couple of years. Informed Aboriginal activists look at their ethnicity's plight from a larger perspective; one that began with the arrival of Champlain, the pressures of John A Macdonald's railroad and the legacy of the paternalistic Indian Act. Throw in the backlash over Oka, in the early 90s, Elijah Harper's part in destroying Brian Mulroney's constitutional compromise, the federal government's colonialistic White Paper, and you have a history of hurt feelings and unintended, unspoken greviences. That said, Canadian Indians have had far better treatment at the hands of Canadian/British governments, as their greviences have had the rule of law often side for their cases. Genocide may be the accusation and language used to condemn "Whites" in aboriginal protest rhetoric today, but they only need to look to the United States and see how that country dealt with its "Indian War," as European settlers displaced and hunted down Aboriginals. Still, these protesters have a point about inaction and the snail-like pace that some of their most destitute communities face. On the other hand, you only need to look to the Cree of Northern Quebec to see a relationship with government and business (Hydro Quebec) that has made Aboriginals extremely well off. Imagine a university student NOT having to pay tuition or additional fees for books, transportation and housing subsidies. That's a reality for the Quebec Cree who benefit from the 1970s deal with Hydro Quebec. That fact doesn't excuse law enforcement for not doing a better job in trying to solve the mystery of disappearing Aboriginal women. It doesn't excuse the deplorable condition of the Aboriginal reserves on the Ontario-side of James and Hudson's Bay. But when you enter a contentious argument with divergent scales of perspective, like that displayed in this video, you are bound to find difficulty in reaching initial agreement about language, greveince and perspective.
