This video was created in 2023 in celebration of the Taos Institute's 30th anniversary of "creating promising futures through social construction". To learn more about the Taos Institute please visit www.taosinstitute.net or join our free online community at www.taosinstitutecommons.com.
Francis Akena Adyanga and Norma Romm (from Uganda and South Africa respectively) engage in conversation around the concept and practice of relationality, especially in regard to relational research practice, but also in regard to other relational activities. They discuss relationality with reference, inter alia, to what is called an Indigenous paradigm for social and transdisciplinary research. They explain how involvement in the Taos Institute has been an inspiration for them and how the African notion of Ubuntu (translated as: I am because we are) carries a relational ontology as also expressed and advocated by one of the founders of the Taos Institute, Kenneth Gergen. They suggest that the striving for more relationality in our existence leads to making the world better in terms of practices which advance social and ecological justice.

Thanks for sharing on this principle of relationality. In fact, this has further motivated me in writing my research proposal on open science which emphasizes collaboration in research studies. Indeed relationality promotes co-generation of ideas but it also results in inclusiveness in research and service delivery. Dr. Akena, as your student of MIS at Kab, I'm really moved by this conversation as it's directly related to my research area.
