Today we visit my highly used Imac G3. A speaker finally died in it and it's time to open it up and do some upgrades and repairs.
I did notice that the power light is flashing in all of this. Looks like it needed a new battery and yet another PRAM reset. Doesn't seem to have affected the performance, fortunately.
Didn't all go to plan but I did end up with great results and I look forward to using the machine for many more years to come.

This is one of the best G3 videos

Thanks! I wish I had more experience and knew more benchmarks I could run that can actually be shown in a video. Kinda boring without fancy stuff to show off!

Go for it! The sound upgrade is SUPER worth it but to be honest they all are. I didn't think the recap would do much but it hasn't locked up a single time since I did the recap. OC and SSD have left their mark too. Overall it has been a great experience. I do wish I could have gotten a superdrive or at least a burner in there but I can always do that swap when I actually find a drive.

Yeah! Next up will be a 386SX/486SLC showdown as I managed to pick up a 486SLC/2. It's untested and dirty from being outside in Las Cruces for likely more than a decade so we will see!

Ah! I know that one but it's one of those acronyms that I get wrong when it comes to actually blurting it out.

Nice video! Personally I would forget about OS9 and put 10.4.11 on it if you’re using it as a daily. I just use 40GB WD drives in mine and find them more than adequate, but then I’m not a gamer! As far as the internal speakers go, no internal speakers are as good as a set of decent external speakers, I picked up a secondhand pair of Bose speakers and they sound 1000% better, so I just use a midrange speaker for the bubbles, just to say it works haha! But nice detailed video, you should try getting a tray loader , they’re another lot of fun to be had😂

I didn't feature it here but I do have an iSub that I use with this sometimes. Really helps fill out the sound! A tray loader with a Voodoo mezzanine card would be sweet.

You did have Apple System Profiler in the Apple menu lol. You went right over it. Did you end up keeping this at 600Mhz or did you go all the way to 700? I'm pretty sure all of the iMac G3's from 500 to 700 Mhz are all 750cx's, so it should handle 700Mhz perfectly fine. I have a native 600Mhz Graphite that I'm thinking about OC'ing to 700. Just not sure exactly what performance gain I would see. Quake III is where performance starts to hurt and I've noticed that I only get about 95% speed in Sega Genesis emulation. I run OS 9.2.2 exclusively on it, so I'm sure there are better Genesis emulators for OS X, however it is a huge improvement over my old 350Mhz model. Genesis emulation on that was pretty janky. So I would think the extra 100Mhz would give it just the boost it needs to get up to full speed and possibly push Quake III a little better as well. Edit: I did see a video floating around of somone who tried to overclock past 700 Mhz and they started getting kernel panic, just so you're aware.

I can't believe I missed it. I did try to run the system at 700 and it was unstable. It froze a few times under heavy load. I had no issues at 650 but wanted a bit more of a buffer from issues so ended up back at 600. It's a good 20% bump so eh. It offers a significant bump as it is so I'm happy with it. I would be that you would notice the extra 100MHz. Diablo 2 doesn't turn into a slide show once deamons show up on the screen so that's a significant improvement. Also much less stuttering in UT99 than before. I also run 9.2.2 almost exclusively. As for the processor types, they did manage 500 with the normal 750. They then got 600 with the CX and eked out 700 with the CXe. You might be right in that they only ever used CX or CXe for the 500+ models as the 750 might have run too hot for the iMac's passive cooling. Unfortunate for this video my 500 managed to be a CXe.

@DKJones96 aah interesting that yours is a CXe. I'm guessing that's why it got iffy at 700Mhz. I'm nervous to push mine. I might just pick up an actual 700Mhz board for it.
