I am a white woman of 77yrs and I watch different African tribal dances. Black people have music dance and soul running through their bodies. Better than any other country. Respect to all. Love your energy and happiness. Beautiful people.❣
What some people don't understand is that this was not just dancing. This is Martial Arts and all the motions were training to make the warriors strong, ambidextrous, agile and physically conditioned to fight without tiring. It is also a warriors meditation...in order to do it right...you have to be locked in mentally and in be totally in battle mode.
Apparently being a strong, agile, and being in the battle mode did nothing to prevent earlier ancestors from being taken as slaves. I guess they weren't as good warriors as they thought.
@@darz3829the white men came with guns & that shifted things in their favor. We had spears which needed proximity to be effective. They had guns and could kill from afar. If it wasn’t for their guns, they would have had a terrible time subduing us. And we still had victories like the isandlwana etc
@@darz3829 Nope! My point is that they had access to better weapons. Just to educate you (I am Zulu after all), this dance depicts close combat. That’s why they carry umkhonto nehawu (a spear and a shield). You use the spear to thrust at a close-by enemy and the shield to ward off their attack. The shield is not bulletproof. My point is that this dance depicts a close physical combat, and if that’s what the conflict entailed, then the coloniser might have been defeated. If there’s a boxing match and someone bring a gun to the ring and shoots the other opponent, then you can’t exactly call them stronger. The coloniser was historically more cunning and would do very evil things wherever he went in the world in order to “win.” They didn’t stop at killing men on a battlefield, they killed women and children too. Look at what Belgium did in the Congo, they killed more people than Hitler’s holocaust, men women and children. I recall also learning about how they subdued the native Americans in order to reduce their populations…by waving the white flag and giving them blankets laced with smallpox which killed men, women and children indiscriminately. That’s not strength, that’s pure evil. Strength in the context of this dance is close hand-to-hand combat man-to-man.
Those aren’t just dance movements, they are fighting movements. Kicks, rushing, all unified in close order drill fashion. The Zulu are indeed fierce warriors.
@@KHWAHLAMBAThe Zulu had nearly 20,000 in that battle and attacked a largely unprepared group of less than 2,000 British men. The Zulu might have won that battle, but it is definitely nothing to brag about. The Zulu were incredibly dumb, reckless, and naive to even consider attacking the British in that battle. They still lost far more men in that battle than the British had period, and soon after, the British came in and completely destroyed them.
I'm a south African (zulu) and happy to see our brothers and sisters in U.S apriciating this. You have to understand that our country is a rainbow nation and there's much much more cultural dances you haven't seen yet, but perhaps you guys will them one day and also be moved.
Oh ok I have a question? I've seen the documentary about the great warrior King Shaka Zulu. The dancing rituals they performed were much different than what is shown here. I'm assuming that what was shown was one of the cultural dances you've mentioned. I'm assuming that it was an original Zulu dance??
@@kayrobbie5840❤I have been in love with Shaka every since the first time I saw him when I was just a kid....I thought he was the most beautiful man in the entire world 🌍 .....I think im gonna watch that now🤗
I am not Zulu, I am A American Native Indian from the Apache Comanche tribe my name means Rainbow and I pray someday I can travel there to Rainbow Nation and watch you dance all your tribal dances
@@sisteririsgoins5660 I'm African I have seen native Indians tribes playing flute oh my god it gave me goosebumps..it made me remember my tribes soulful song for the spirits before going into a battle in Bini, Modern day Nigeria
Watching this video, tears welled in my eyes because never have I ever been more proud to be AFRICAN-American. For all that AAs lost through the slave trade, to know that the people we come from are still ever creative and resilient despite current circumstances makes me feel so blessed.
All the afroamerican people you must to be very proud of yours africans origins, Africa it is our MODERLAND. lONG LIVE FOR ALL THE AFRICAN PEOPLES ! NO MORE RACISM!
@@duncanlaing6078 I was just thinking that. Zulu's were rounding up members of docile and less intelligent tribes and trading them in the markets of Portuguese Mozambique and the Swahili Coast. It's why these dances were not seen practiced in pre or post-Civil War America. These weren't the dances of the enslaved.
I fell in love with the stories my uncle taught me about the Zulu tribe as a child. This tribe was my first introduction to Africa so I never believed the narrative American schools tried to teach us about our history. Thank you for sharing this with us. It truly warms my heart!
💯💜💥✌️All the way from the real DC... I am PROUD of your post! YOU SPEAK TRUTH regarding the education of american schools and others! They Do Not want YOU to know the TRUE HISTORY they only want to tell ONE STORY! 💜KUDOS
@@isaiahhenderson3447 As in 'are there Zulus currently living in the southeast of Africa'? sure...but originate from there? no. Zulu land is in Southern Africa.
@@chimcham6762 nope, Zulus originate from Southern Africa, where all africans came from. The cradle of Human kind is here, the oldest spheres that have been found is here. Adams calender is also here. Imagine believing white man's Histry of Bantu Migration.
Zulu’s are the most respectful people on the planet - Tough soldiers with built in honesty and pride. These qualities were installed many generations ago and have been carried through the generations - Respect ✊ to these people ❤️
Do people realize every move in this "dance" is a fight move...there was clearly 2 advance and attack and 1 for falling and regroup. *THANK YOU FOR HISTORY AND FIGHT LESSONS!*
Black people, no matter where we are in the world, will react to the beat of drums. THIS is why...it's in us! No matter how much the US and other nations have tried to erase our culture, there's ALWAYS a hint of our ancestry there, especially when it comes to artistic and creative abilities, and natural athleticism. We are known innovators. My African brothers and sisters are also some of the most intellectually gifted people I know.
So impressed. African American here, and I can see our Black College Drum Majors is this Video. Amazing how much we are still so Alike. I LOVE THIS VIDEO! Africa is Amazing!
Yes! A lot of the movements are so similar to the drum majors. I'm glad someone else caught it. They can beat us down but they can't beat our culture out of us
We have a lot of African culture we have kept. But we are not aware because we don’t know our brothers and sister. The internet is a godsent because we now can see our Africaness. It’s undeniable that Africa has never left us. We just an African remix.that’s all. You see these Southern African dances in us especially our fraternities and sororities.
@@pmambongwe8640 We are called African American because we are a mixture of many African ethnic groups. Most noticeable West Africa but not excluding the rest of Africa. Most historians leave out the fact that many Africans were taken from Angola. The first people taken to America were Ngona( I’m not sure of the spelling) it’s well documented. As you are aware the borderlines we have today were drawn by the Europeans. In Southern Africa chattel slavery happened….another part of history they don’t speak about. Few were bought to America but none the less they were bought here too. Not to mention the Arab slave trade was still going on in East Africa and there were many exchanges there particularly when direct Africans from West Africa was banned in 1808 in America. African Americans have created our own culture from so many. You will see eliminates of many. Also African Americans share a common history of being under the thumb of European oppression directly in modern times with South Africans.
I'm African American from the south (Charleston SC) I'm a dancer at heart... I am so hype from this... lawd I wanna know my African roots!!! The energy is just out of this world... Sooo Proud!😍😍😍😍😍
Its not going be Zulu since they are east African but its better to check out the west African dances. Congo, Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, and the Mandinka people.
Culture is what makes Africa the most interesting continent in the world....I can't get tired of watching these traditional manifestations....thanks for posting
💋💋💋This is where roots come from: Malawi 🇲🇼. I'm Ngoni same culture as zulu. This is beautiful amazing dance I never seen in my entire life 🙏🙏kept up guys.
@@indlondlozuludancers4996 Good day, I am taking a class on World Dance highlight African Dance. I loved the beat, the moves as well as the attire. Can you please tell me the name of the dance that was being performed in this video? And the purpose of the dance? I would greatly appreciate your input. Thank you in advance.
Zulus Swatis, ndebele, Tsongas and Xhosas in South Africa are Nguni tribes, we know that we came from the great lakes area possibly thousands of years earlier.
Yes people should be allowed to be proud of our ancestry of all types. I have always looked in awe of the Zulu how magical!! Similar to Island dancers but still unique. Thanks for the gift of this video ,thanks Africa xxx
Sou do Brasil 🇧🇷 e amo meus irmãos afro descendentes e sua cultura. sou da Bahia um pedaço da África aqui no Brasil viva a África e todos os seus descendentes I love You african.🌍🖤
I'm always proud of being Zulu but watching this video makes me cry because we used to gather with my family and perform our culture dance, but most of my family members past away. This video brings back all the good memories we shared thank you guys for reminding us who we are,I have so much love and respect for you guys ❤❤❤
It’s so crazy how many aspects of HBCU life I see here. Greek probates, drum majors, etc. We do things that are in connection to our roots without even realizing!
@S M The fact that after his mother died he ordered all cattle to be slaughtered, burnt all growing food and all children born in that year to be killed.
@captain darling nah most Africans don’t deny this. I’m Zulu and we are literally told all the time of how cruel Shaka Zulu was. We were even told he buried all virgins in the village with his mother when she died to guard her in the after life. And how he once killed a soldier who described the water in the river in Amanzimtoti as “mnandi“ (which means delicious) which bears a respemblance to his mothers name Nandi and ordered everyone to use the word “mtoti“ so as to be more respectful. Literally all Zulu people know this.
@@slycat2355 that's where the steppers get it but their divine 9 steppers does it for the clubs, these Zulu dancers been doing it for their people, it's a big difference.
I wish it was easy to have a competition in Africa so that we can see and learn about other African countries traditional dances. We have such talent as Africans.
Not even going to lie, if all the AA went back to the motherland and this is how our distant African families welcomed us like this. I’d break down into tears, I’d be so overjoyed to be there. I’d truly be at peace if I was able to come back home.
This is absolutely wonder to see....I'm at awe of this whole presentation. You see the culture and its relation to African American culture of today...with dancing, speaking, stepping, discipline, beats, drumming and chanting. When I talk to my students about our culture, I not only speak about what happened to us during slave, but the AFRICAN CULTURE and let them know we are so much more than what happened here in America. This video and presentation is powerful.
Afro American that has always admired the Zulu! What a blessing to be able to see them up close and personal in this manner. As expected they never let down just shock more and more! When I see them perform it ignites something in me and reminds me of being home.
Beautiful! I was blessed to be an African dancer for 8 years. It is truly amazing to see the descendants of my ancestors partake in this dance. Truly amazing!
Of course it's a Zulu dance in Africa... I think this is in South Africa, in the continent of Africa which will primarily consist of people of African descent
@@nicolen3177 It's performed in Durban, Kwazulu Natal, South Africa at the uShaka Marine world Aquarium. They host a traditional Zulu dance competition every year.
I'm Welsh/Scottish. I'm glad it's just your people at this circus. Too bad us Westerners have to put up with this circus culture in our own nations here in the West.
SCREAMING, I absolutely positively love it!!! Dancing is a spiritual ritual showing God the rhythms of his beauty between the heavens and the Earth. Dancing is a part of our culture that radiates the SOUL allowing it to move and flow freely through instrumental SOUNDS and music.
@@emilywilson3469 You have to understand the dance to appreciate the screaming. Warriors would dance before battle and the enemy would HEAR the coming of their eventual death. You would put EVERYTHING you had into the dance to intimidate your enemy because you knew not if you would return. It has its purpose and my God it is beautiful. As black people other races claim that we are loud. Now you know why because it is within us. Embrace the screaming. It is part of who we are.
It is actually not screaming it is a form of appreciation. It is a form of ululation which shows strong pride in our Zulu culture and it usually accompanied with praises if you listen clearly you can hear that they are saying something while screaming. They are actually praising them.
This is what differentiates us from other fellow Africans. I love it ...am a proud Zulu. I always appreciate other African cultural dances as well.... Proud African
And slaves (btw I'm South African but saying they weren't slaves is dumb, they might have been king, queens and whatnot but some were still slaves. Although that only applies to Western and Eastern Africans, Southern Black Africans were not enslaved.
@@dinamena.nhantumbo I've heard of slavery in Mozambique which I should have noted as an exception but it is of course not as popular or well known as the Trans Atlantic slave trade. But what the guy above said that black people weren't slaves is a very unintelligent thing to say. Not every black person was an elite warriors or chief or queen and many were indeed slaves so his logic doesn't do it for me. Btw I'll definitely look in what you said about Xhosa's being kidnapped, I have not heard of that before. And free labour, yeah that was basically unofficial slavery.
Great africa, i am from cameroon my ZULU brothers are back, thank God for this Wonderful energy that you have blessed your frist children on earth. Love jesus.
Zulu blood runs strong in my father's side of my family. I'm African American and this is my first time watching any type of tribal dances from my own roots... its breath taking on so many levels. It would be a real honor to be able to visit the Motherland someday. High kicks run in my blood!
blackjesusisking7777 It’s in the culture. It’s in the language and the dance. The Zulu are a warrior tribe that is known to be fearless in war. No hesitation and no fear of death. A Zulu that showed fear in war would be killed by another Zulu. Fear is contagious in battle and has to be eliminated at once. Till this day we Zulu’s are still a people of war. When our king speaks we listen. However there is more to us than just war. “Ubuntu” is a concept where one takes care of their fellow man as they would care for themselves. We therefore are a people that loves peace and values respect of human lives above all else.
