Over a month ago, the Indonesian content creating scene is shocked with the resurgence of RUU Penyiaaran or the Draft Revision Laws for Broadcasting. The revision threatens the freedom of expression that many content creators in Indonesia values, with laws empowering the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission to control content in platform such as RU-vid and Tiktok. Since then, many creators have protested over the possible implementation of this law. The reaction against it was strong enough for the government to postpone the review hearing. However, we must continue to discuss the caveats and the threats presented by this law in order to act as a surveying measure to prevent this law from taking place.
With that, I’ve invited Ade Armando, a veteran social media activist and a prominent figure in Indonesian broadcasting, to sit with me and discuss this ridiculous law, and the trend of putting forth anti democratic laws.
