In this video, you'll learn how to replant and care for indoor plants to keep them thriving in your home. We'll guide you through the step-by-step process of repotting your plants, choosing the right soil, and ensuring proper drainage. On our channel you can discover the best ways to water, fertilize, and provide enough light for healthy plant growth. Whether you're caring for succulents, houseplants, or tropical plants, this video offers practical tips for maintaining lush, vibrant indoor greenery by choosing the right soil and repotting in the right pot. Perfect for beginners and seasoned plant lovers alike!
Learning how to choose the best soil for your houseplants is so important for keeping them healthy and thriving.
Here’s how we select the right soil mix:
Know Your Plant's Needs
Different houseplants have specific soil requirements. For example:
- Succulents and cacti need well-draining soil with sand or perlite.
- Tropical plants like ferns and peace lilies prefer rich, moisture-retentive soil.
- Orchids and epiphytes need a bark-based mix for airflow to their roots.
Choose Well-Draining Soils
Most houseplants prefer soil that allows water to drain properly to avoid root rot. Look for potting mixes with components like:
- Perlite or pumice to improve aeration.
- Sand for better drainage in drier plant types.
- Peat moss to retain moisture while staying light.
Add Organic Matter to your soil mixes or buy mixes with it already in there
For plants that thrive on nutrient-rich soil, choose mixes containing organic material like:
-Compost or worm castings for a nutrient boost.
- Coconut coir as an eco-friendly, moisture-retentive alternative to peat moss.
Avoid Garden Soil for Potted Plants at all costs
Never use regular garden soil for indoor plants-it can compact, hinder drainage, and introduce pests. Always use a commercial potting mix designed for houseplants. You can find great mixes in your local stores
Consider your plants pH Balance
Some plants, like succulents, prefer slightly more alkaline soil, while others, such as ferns, do better with more acidic soil. Check the recommended pH for your plant type. You can use google to find out this information.
By matching your soil choice with your plant's specific needs, you’ll provide the perfect growing conditions for healthy growth and happy indoor plants!

I think I have two weeks before we get into the 40Fs, so I need to start bringing the house plants in, and I still have two outdoor plants to get into the ground. I have to check the plants for rollypollies and lizards when bringing them in, but one year I had a toad sneak in! That was the wrong kind of exciting, lol. I tried to overwinter a petunia indoors one year and got it to February before it tapped out. Do systemics work on spider mites? I have a spray that works, but if I can use a systemic and be lazy, that'd be great!

I’m kind of upset with you . Your repotting and I’m looking at my Thai constellation KNOWING that I need to repot it, so what do I do, I put you on pause grab my Thai and take it outside thinking this will be easy. Well it sure wasn’t the roots were growing out the bottom mind you it had an attached sauce and it was growing out of the attached saucer and I sure don’t know how it accomplished that, I had to pry the saucer off and TRY to get the roots out of the drainage holes 😱 I felt like a murderer because you know what happened to those roots 😱anyway it’s repotted I’m hoping it likes its new home, I’m sure it appreciates the room but oh my gosh !!! That was a struggle !! And the sad thing is I THINK that I have a few more that are like that 😱 I don’t take very good care of my plants during the summer months in fact they hardly get watered 🥺 I know my bad. Anyway it’s time, time to get the repotting done. I just have to scout up some bigger pots. 🧐 🌺💚🙃

@@TheThriftedPlanter very true ! Now all I have to do is convert my laundry room into my new plant growing area. I’ve given up on the idea of transforming the basement it’s way too cold down there and I can’t afford to keep it heated so the laundry room it is. Thankfully the laundry room is very large and I’ll be able to do some REAL growing in there. 🌺💚🙃
