The message at the end is what you need to listen to about his setup may not work for you ,i would suggest you use a 5G data sim in your phone and see what kind of signal your getting before commiting to any setup If you do get signals from your phone buy your sim from 3 under a buisness line (can make a sole trader up) for 10 pounds a month and buy your router from ebay for 120 pounds 😊 zyxel three branded 5g router
Agreed. Zyxel NR5103e is unlocked for all isp and has 4 external ports TS9. The rabbit ears antenna does not improve on the internal antenna performance so unless you intend to site it at a window and use exterior antennae 4x4 MIMO you are better off saving money with no antennae or buying a combination of modem and antenna for exterior fixing
I had the same ZTE MC801A router from Three, was getting 100-105 db signals with 30-60 Mbps on speedtest. Switched to ZTE MC7010 with a Smarty SIM and I get 80-85 db signals with 450-500 Mbps, the best part is that the ping went from 67 to 15 ms and gaming is so smooth.
Hi. Yes, you can sometimes see a big difference between different routers. This will be because of the bands that each router locks onto and some bands carry higher data rates than others. Routers don't always lock onto the bands that will give the fastest signal and they also sometimes don't lock onto the band with the best S/N, especially if there are multiple cell towers and frequency bands within reach. Cheers, Dave.
Which router do you use for Wi-Fi? I tried an MC7010, and yes, the signal is amazing. But when I connected that router to my TP-Link Wi-Fi router, there was some conflict, and it didn't work properly.
@@bebestrumf69 THREE used to sell the MC7010 with T3000 WiFi as a package, T3000 is a WiFi 6 router, I bought it off eBay for £180, included both the outdoors 5G router and the indoors WiFi router, alongwith OEM mounting, cables & accesories etc. It comes with a flat 100ft CAT6 cable which links the external and internal, the cable is flat and passes through any window or door seal, no alteration or holes required.
@@DavidHarry its not just a difference in router, the MC7010 is an outdoor 5G antenna+router, THREE used to sell it with their 5G packages to areas with low indoor signals, it comes with an indoor WiFi 6 router (T3000), both are made by ZTE.
Hi. When using servers that are local to you, which is what Speednet defaults to, the only difference in speeds will be margin of error. With all the servers that I get automatically connected to in the UK, the speeds are all the same, as is the latency. Cheers, Dave.
Wow! Lucky you! I am off grid, and I use the Netgear Nighthawk M1 4G SIM CARD router ( that your sponsors also list) I had a great improvement, about 3x better Upload and Download…..which is probably even more significant than your results, as I had a very poor signal before. I ran my tests at different times of day, about 30 times each. I have also added an external antenna, but I am limited by the antenna cable length, which is 5m. Results were only slightly improved, however bear in mind my antenna ideally should be located higher than it is. Strangely, like you, my Ping did get slightly worse, by about the same degree as yours, but the trade off in Upload and Download speeds is worth it. So if you need a decent SIM card router, don’t waste your money on the cheaper £50-£100 units, they are a bit hit and miss, instead invest more to get solid results. (Just ran a test, 53 mbps Down, 7.5 Up, Ping 39.)
Yes, definitely don't go for a cheap router. As for the latency getting slightly worse. Just like you said, I would easily put up with that if the tradeoff is getting much better upload and download speeds. Cheers, Dave.
Hi, Daniel. Yes, you will see the same difference whether it's the modified SMA ports or the original TS9. Just be carful with the TS9 ports as they snap off very easily, this is why my router has the SMA ports, because they were to replace broken TS9 posts. Check my Router-Mods playlist for a video about strain relief for the TS9 ports. Cheers, Dave.
Hi. The original speeds are basically the same as the small indoor antennas. I couldn't do the test with its internal antennas because the modifications disables the internal antennas. Cheers, Dave.
▮▮▮▯▯ -84 dbm Band 8 (3G/LTE) ▮▮▮▮▯ -95 dbm N78 (NR) I have my 5g router close to window and I do not want to use any outdoor antenna but I am getting 14,90ms, downloadspeed at 335,44Mbit/s upload 31,15Mbit/s at 03:46 night normaly I get half of the speed at day becuze people sleep now and I still up and play my games. I am getting higher ping in games with 5g but price is only 15 bucks in sweden and fiber (100/100 speed) cost twice as much for lower ping in games.
hi i got the new 5g hub from three and i want to get some antennas for it what do i need and where to buy them from if i do wil it be faster with thoses or not without them i an geting 600 mb down speed
I’m really thinking about this for my next update on my internet. I was paying £65 a month with virgin for 500 but have since been on a plan for £20 at 1gig. I know this can’t last forever so I will be looking into this. I know I have a three mobile 5g mast right down my road in clear view and I know that if I had one it would be fast from speed tests on my phone at the back of my house. The only thing stopping me is the upfront cost for a good router and an external pointed antenna. I know I can get business grade sims for like £200 in the uk for two years so it’s gonna be brilliant when it’s setup. Works out to be like £10 a month ish with an upfront cost of 350 for the tech.
4:36 B1 vs B1 + B3 😂 . Just ask ur provider to give u outdoor CPE instead of paying random ppl to mod ur indoor CPE 😂 . lots of money spend to just triger the CPE dual band 😂
Very Good David....You explained that very well....Im on 3 and got the same Router Zte MC801A....Outside in the Summerhouse...I can get up to 248 mgb without an external antenna.....but move it inside the house....the signal drops dramatically....So Im not sure that this system is good enough to replace your landline wifi....You mention the external antenna and some people will go the whole hog and fit one....But alot of people wont....Anyway I will certainly go to Router Mods..and have a look around ...Thanks again for this video.
Hi, Mark. You are very welcome 👍 Yes, these things can be a pain as far as the setup is concerned. However, in the right situation or if there's no alternatives, then this type of internet connectivity can be a real blessing. As for the external antenna. Yes, it's something that most people don't want or don't need. Although it is good to have the options for those who don't mind the extra messing about. Definitely visit the Router-Mods website, they're probably the best in the UK for this kind of stuff. Cheers, Dave.
How is the speed and connectivity compared to a phone. I have a 5g phone that has trouble getting 5g signals in my apartment. It works well outside though so I know my area has good 5g coverage. But would a router without outdoor antennas (again, apartment) have a better 5g connection?
The internal antennas on this router are better than my phone. Placed in the position, my phone will only pick up 4G but the router will pick up 5G. You will generally find that routers have a more sensitive antenna system compared to a phone and a router’s antennas are higher gain. Cheers, Dave.
I know this two months ago, I got a three sim and in my phone struggled to get 5mb download, but in the router against the window I get about 400mb, really couldn't believe the difference, I am about half a mile from a tower so reasonable close. have got rid of the old Broadband and just use this, much cheaper and faster, I work from home most of the time and it works great, only issue is slow on uploads at about 20mb but I can live with the occasional time I notice.
HI there. Great video, thanks. I've got an external modem (ZTE7010) and am getting the following readings; Sig strength -79 SNIR - 25.5 all of which are better figures than the ones in this video, yet I'm getting 350 Mbps. I'm not sure how far away I am from the tower, but with these results, shouldn't I be getting fast speeds?
With the internal antennas it would quite often not pick up 5G and even when it did it wasn't as fast as using the outdoor external antennas. Cheers, Dave.
@@JoergAsmussen The difference between the indoor external antennas and the router’s internal antennas is very minimal. The only real difference with these things is if you are using outdoor antennas and they are within range of the cell towers. As for just one antenna. In most scenarios there’s not been a huge a difference in my tests. I’ve also disconnected various combinations of the internal antennas for 4G and 5G and even with just one 4G internal antenna connected the difference can be very minimal, especially if you’re in a good reception area to start off with. If you’re looking for advice, do not get a modification unless you are using good outdoor antennas and you are within the range of your local cell towers and preferably within direct line of sight with no obstructions. Cheers, Dave.
It's all about the ping. If you play on fast-paced games like shooters or driving games, you might not even get into a lobby above 50mS. At 200 mph, a car game makes your car jitter on screen, making them unplayable or cause issues with sim racing leagues. Mine is 34mS, and I have the odd issue. 5G in its current form is borderline for competitive gaming.
Hi, Kelvin. Yes, latency is the main thing for gaming, especially fast paced shooters (I play Warzone Mobile). 5G is great for speed for downloading and uploading if you have a fast speed, my fastest is about 600Mbs download but the latency is about 40 to 60ms, which isn’t great for fast shooters. However, my upload is about 75Mbs, which is awesome for uploading my RU-vid videos. That all said, for gaming, I use a standard landline phone connection. This is only about 8Mbs down and about 2Mbs up but the latency is about 12ms to local servers, which is way better than my 5G for gaming. Cheers, Dave.
@DavidHarry I had the same setup as the 5G is only 20£pm, but the old copper connection (I live in the countryside) was 20mbps down & 1mbps up @ 27mS was unbelievably 30£pm. Latency was fine, but the 1mbps upload wasn't good enough either, which left me stuck. I really hope the fibre sector pulls their finger out. 5G was 700mbps down, 70mbps up & 34mS when I first bought it but because Three basically rule my area, the traffic has got higher and higher over the past few years meaning peak times only offer 20mbps down, 60mbps up & 34mS ping on occasion. What's funny is that last week, I was in the Vietnamese mountains in the jungle on an alledged 4G sim card only with civilisation dozens of miles away. I got 300mbps down, 20mbps up at
ok so. i get 1500 Mbps down and 160 up where my 14 pro max where i want to install this router. what speed and signal i can expect from this router… everything I find on the net is max 470 mbps…. is this router capable of full 5G speeds?
I don't understand mobile routers. Do the routers have a separate set of antennas to send/receive cellular data from the antennas used to send/receive data to devices connected to your wifi?
Thanks for clarifying. How about those regular wireless router (non mobile) that have a lot of antennas on them on the outside? Im surprised the mobile router wifi antennas are built in
weird that the ping increased by 10ms isn't it? Thanks for the video man, very interesting! May I ask you how long the cable connecting your external antenna to the modem please? Also, what is the benefit of getting the SMA connections fitted vs the existing TS 9 ones? I have the same modem, and am looking to optimise :)
Yes, the ping changes between 4G and 5G. My antenna cables are 3 metres. I can almost guarantee you that the TS9 ports will snap off when connecting external antennas. Even the weight of the antenna cables is enough to snap them off. this is why the SMA conversion is recommended, as these are physically stronger ports with massively better strain relief. The TS9 ports are just held on with solder to the main board, not screwed to the case like the SMA ports. Cheers, Dave.
@@DavidHarry good to know cheers David, I imagine there's a little less loss without the adapters and couplings etc also. Thanks again really appreciate the response, best wishes from Ireland 🇮🇪
@@conordia6906 Yes, technically there’s always insertion loss with adaptors and joins. However, if it’s just one you’re not really likey to see much in it. Cable length between the external antennas and the router is more of an issue for signal loss, the shorter the better. All the best from Liverpool 👍 Cheers, Dave.
Nice video, that's the fastest way to add an antenna. Can you please let me know the way to enable in routers software how to enable the external antenna ?
Dear Dave 🫶 You are a good role model for society with your personal values and morals, as well as your technical information, all of which were applied and found acceptance and 100% positive results, in light of many in this field who speak without having any experience. I thank you very much. I am indebted to you for your service. I am at your command, dear Dave❤️
The point is this, outdoor antennas are often 5g. But they are hardly 4g/5g, I have seen some for 4x4 5g mime, if you are in an area where you do not have good coverage, the external antennas would only be needed for 5g, they would also be needed for 4g. Because 5g may be solo, but it's more likely that it needs the support of 4g to work. Give me a list of routers with 4g external antennas. Then any modifications can be made ok, but we are getting to the complexity of cell phones with 8/12 antennas or more, and it is unthinkable that Montini 8/9 antennas also in translated polarization. I 5g router with external 4g antennas have not seen any. Of course they have also modified the chateau with 8 antennas but it seems to me that there is an open discussion on what to connect compared to what.
The antenna may be 4G/5G but this specific router only uses it for 5G. So for this specific router the external antenna will do nothing if you don't have 5G.
The length of the cables will increase the ping. To shorten the cables, be sure to place the router/modem closer to the area where the antenna is mounted.
i have same router in Ireland signal strenght -94db and sinr 19-23db at the moment . Router in the attic against the roof. Do i need external antenna for it ? its on N3 band ,im getting 200mbits tops in the early mornings
Hi David - is it possible to have this Indoor Antenna setup on one side of the house - but if ive got a very large floor plan, how would I extend the signal to other parts of the house? - apologies as very new to this.
WiFi is what delivers the signal to your devices, and that will cover most of your street, never mind your house! You only need one 4G/5G router for one house - it can connect 30 or more devices at the same time no problems. Hope that helps.
Man in your blue screen comparison is mbit not Mb/s you making review and you don't know difference between 😂😂 your 453Mb/s is 3624mbit so you have internet from other planet 🤣
Its good for netflix and emails and movies but for gaming no i had 400mbit/s and still cannot play properly call of duty ping was 36-50ms and ingame experience shuddering freezes so its not good for gaming fps thats for fibre even if you have 10mb fibre connection ping would be 15-20ms
@@xxx17romnI don't get that with this router. I play battle royale fast paced ping sits at 40~ I think you have bad signal in your place. Try with an antenna.
