Using a gen4 ssd for an iPhone that can only offer 10Gbps is, for lack of a better word, stupid. There are other solutions for this that works on the 4.5W envelope, which will saturate the port speed and more energy efficient.
@DavidHarry
@DavidHarry День назад
What’s stupid is making a comment, thinking you know what your talking about when you quite clearly don’t. You’ve not accounted for the high minimum consistent bitrate needed for such things, which a Gen 4 will be better at than Gen 3 and you never gave any example of a solution that you claim would work.
@kylinblue
@kylinblue День назад
@@DavidHarryright on. And right now it’s easier to source gen4 than gen3 if you buy new.
@HedonicSense
@HedonicSense День назад
@@DavidHarry I probably know more about what I am talking about than you do. Any nvme gen 3 that has ram on it and it is mlc/tlc will saturate 1GB/s of throughput which is more than the 440MB/s a pro res 4k 120fps video will consume, without going above the 4.5W allowance. For example, Hynix P31 Gold will do that for 2.5W. You probably can't beat that, simple and plain. Highly available and still in production. As well, CFExpress cards will do exactly the same thing, with a Lexar CFExpress reader, and are probably a better solution depending of how much video you need to shoot, and this, again, won't go over your power budget. Or even, a 870 EVO sata drive will do 500MB/s forever... literally... for 2.5W. So yes, gen 4 drives, to record on an iphone, are pointless and stupid, and the only advantage would be to transfer back to the PC. But again, there isn't an enclosure that will support more than gen 3 x4 for external drives unless you have the only laptop that it has thunderbolt 5 (done by Razer), but again, without commercial enclosures for it? If you are telling me that every single time you take the nvme out and install it inside the pc, that might not be a painful process at all.

@@HedonicSense As you’ve clearly not taken the bridge controller into account and just relied on how any SSD “should” perform, without it being used with the iPhone, that would suggest that you don’t know more about such things than I do. You may well be very familiar with certain SSDs and their performance, just as I am. But pairing them with an iPhone hardly ever results in the same performance. I have a few Thunderbolt SSDs that can sustain about 2600MB/s for writing. If I use these with most 10Gb/s USB-C hosts via a Thunderbolt dock, they will indeed flood the bus and get about 900MB/s but when attached to the iPhone they will drop to less than half of that. Again, issues with the bridges and controllers. This is why fully testing any “off the shelf” SSD or enclosure/SSD combination is important with the iPhones. You’ve also not taken into account Apple’s lack of support for 3.2 2x2, which although I have not tested on the iPhones because I won’t use a drive or enclosure with those specs due to my Macs. I wouldn’t be surprised if the iPhones have the same issue with the lack of PCIe lanes. If you still think that you may know more about such things than I do, then please feel free to respond with examples of proper validated testing with the iPhones.
@DavidHarry
@DavidHarry День назад
@@HedonicSense BTW, I have already had someone confirm in a comment to one of my videos that their CFexpress cards and interface had issues sustained the bitrate. Again, proving that just because something works properly for what it’s designed for, it doesn’t necessarily mean it will work with the iPhones. Plus I have had others confirm the same issues with other drives that should work.

Hi. You are very welcome. I wouldn't personally buy a Gen 4 for use with any of the iPhones that have Lightning. All Lightning iPhones only have the equivalent of USB2 speeds, so you wouldn't notice the difference with any SSD, they would all be the same slow speed because of the limitation of Lightning. If you already have a Gen 4, then extra power would help but isn't a guarantee that it will work. Yes, extra power with a T7 will work. This case doesn’t not have a fan and does not do Thunderbolt or USB 4.0 40Gbps so that might actually use more power.. but I don’t have such an enclosure yet. Was actually planning to buy/wait for a thunderbolt 5 ssd enclosure but that might actually be impossible to use in my iPad/iPhone with that power limit 😕😬.
@DavidHarry
@DavidHarry 2 дня назад
@@pvdgucht Hi. Do some research on USB3.2 2x2 (I think this is what your UGREEN is) and Apple products. Certain Macs, maybe all of them, don't utilise the full bandwidth of 2x2, they don't support the extra PCIe lanes. They basically run the drives slower than what they are capable of. I'm not sure but I have feeling that the iPhones and iPads do the same. Also, the USB-C iPhones only support 10Gb/s anyway, so even if they see the drive, they wont hit it at the drive's full speed. Also, I believe the 990 Pro uses over 5W, so coupled with the power requirement of any enclosure, that power draw is easily getting to 7W, maybe more. Apple Silicon iPads are different, they use Thunderbolt and support about 7W but can still be problematic. TB5 will be backwards compatible and should work, but the TB3 and TB4 protocols will mean that even if a TB5 enclosure/drive does work, you wont see any speed increase. TB3 and TB4 also segment bandwidth for DP video, which is why you never see a TB3/4 SSD reaching anywhere near 40Gb/s (5GB/s or 5000MB/s) even with a 7000MB/s Gen4 in them, they usually top out at about 3000MB/s maximum. BTW, extra power delivery, either direct or via a hub or dock can also help. I'd be interested to see how you get on with your drive setup. Good luck 👍 Cheers, Dave.

In this video I show why it is a really good idea to use a tempered glass screen protector on your iPad. As you can see in the video my M4 iPad Pro had a crack on the screen and it only fell a short distance off the edge of a bed on to a wooden floor. However, the tempered glass screen protector took all the damage and the iPad's screen was not damaged. Hi. That will usually sort out the problem, however, there can still be some issues where the iPhone doesn't use the drive at its full speed and can still sometimes not see the drive at all. I'm not sure why that is but I'm guessing that it's a compatibility issue with the USB controller in the enclosure or the drive itself. I use a number of USB and Thunderbolt docks and even using one of those, my iPhone still refuses to see one of my TB4/USB4/Gen4 drives. iPhone 16 Problem With USB-C Power For External SSD Storage Drives I forgot to make it clear in the video that this issues only applies to the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max, as the iPhone 16 and the iPhone 16 Plus can't record ProRes 4K 120FPS. Sorry about that. In this video I'm talking about the USB-C power problem that can happen with certain USB-C SSD storage devices connected to the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. The issue is that with the 4.5W power limit of these iPhones when powering external devices. This power availability will not allow certain SSD drives to work. In my tests all combinations of USB-C NVMe enclosures and Thunderbolt NVMe enclosures using a Gen 4 NVMe M.2 SSDs, would not work during to the power limit. In my opinion, Apple could have preempted this problem by allowing higher power delivery for such SSD drives. Given that it would not be unreasonable to suggest that for anyone recording high bitrate ProRes 4K 120FPS video to already be using Gen 4 NVMe based SSD drives. Hi. None of my SSDs will either and I use SSDs that are more than capable and have also tried my Thunderbolt SSDs direct and via Thunderbolt and USB-C docks and they don't work. Or at least none of them will do long sustained recordings. I have since had comments from others using known fast storage capable of the 442MB/s required for the format and they have had issues. I have a feeling that the issues may not be with the connected drives. Unfortunately, SSDs like the 990Pro or any drive/enclosure with a Gen 4 in it, is unlikely to even be seen by the iPhone. This is due to the iPhone having a 4.5W limit on its USB-C port for powering external devices and the combination of an enclosure and a Gen4 SSD, in every test that I a have, requires more than 4.5W. Which results in the iPhone simply refusing to give the necessary power that the drive needs and so will not be seen, let alone work. Check this recent video, I show this power issue by testing a few enclosures and a few Gen 3 and Gen 4 SSDs ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TEDn-OArpgI.htmlsi=DPekj4vS9Bjj1un1 Cheers, Dave.

@@DavidHarry The rate I specified is in megabytes per second. 190 megabytes/sec that I mentioned is 10 bits per pixel, so the bitrate is 1.9 Gigabits/sec. This is technical fact as per Apple’s own specifications for ProRes and not my personal opinion. You are completely wrong. Also, that bitrate you mentioned of 190MB/s which is 1520Mb/s. Do you have a problem with your USB-C iPhone and it can't see or connect to your external USB-C SSD storage Drive? While there could be a number of reasons why this is happening. As long as your external drive is formatted to a disk format that iPhone understands. It could be that your external SSD requires more power than your iPhone can supply. In this video I show you how a Gen 4 NVMe SSD can't be seen by my iPhone because it requires too much power in combination with the USB-C and Thunderbolt NVMe enclosures that I am using. I also give some recommendations of what type of external USB-C SSD you can use with your iPhone. One way to get around this is to use a powered hub or dock but that's only really useful if you are indoors. If you are trying to use a traditional hard drive with your iPhone, as in, as spinning mechanical hard drive. Most of these wont work and will need to be connected to a powered hub or dock. Earlier iPhones before the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16, such as the iPhone 14, iPhone 13, iPhone 12, iPhone 11, iPhone 10, iPhone Mini and iPhone SE etc. Which use a Lightning socket and not a USB socket will also have this exact same problem. For my demonstration I am using an iPhone 16 Pro Max. However all iPhones suffer from this problem. At most an iPhone will only supply a maximum of 4.5W to its USB-C port or Lightning port and this power is simply not enough for certain external hard drives or external USB-C SSD storage drives. READ THIS TO UNDERSTAND WHY THIS PARTICULAR GEN 4 NVME M.2 SSD IS BEING USED: The reason why this particular SSD is being used, isn’t because the SSD is super fast or anything, it’s because of its sustained transfer speeds for writing data. The data bandwidth for Thunderbolt 4 is just under 3000MB/s but no Gen 3 NVMe SSD can sustain that speed. Using a high quality Gen 4 SSD, such as the SN850X, will sustain the maximum data bandwidth that the enclosure will allow. Using a Gen 3 SSD, even one that says it’s faster than 3000MB/s, won’t sustain anywhere near that speed when writing large amounts of continuous data in one go. It’s all down to the caching systems on the drives and the high quality, fast Gen 4 NVMe SSDs generally have better caching and buffering compared to the Gen 3 NVMe SSDs. Some cheaper Gen 4 NVMe SSDs won’t sustain that data rate either. Again, another reason for recommending what may appear to be an unnecessarily expensive SSD. That may also appear to be much faster than what you think you may need. Also, the reason why we only get about 3000MB/s out of Thunderbolt 4 for data and not the 5000MB/s, which is what 40Gb/s is. Is because about 2000MB/s of Thunderbolt 4’s bandwidth/bus speed is taken up for video, even though video is not being used with the enclosure. The separate video bandwidth is just part of the protocols for Thunderbolt 4 and which is why the entire 5000MB/s bus speed of Thunderbolt 4 is not all used for data transferring, even when a video signal is not being used. You can of course use much cheaper Gen 3 NVMe SSDs if you don’t require the fast sustained maximum write speeds. And you can also use smaller capacity SSDs if you don’t require large storage spaces. The reason why I use the 4TB WD SN850X is because it will give me the maximum speed for sustained writing of very large file transfers in one go and I personally need at least 4TB of storage because I use a lot of large, high bandwidth video files. Benchmark SSD speeds have nothing to do with this problem. You need to look at sustained write speeds. According to Apple you need a minimum of 450mb/s or 3.6Gbps write speeds. With Samsung 980 after 15 min the speed drops to 400mbps which is lower than Apple recommended speed. If you want an SSD to do 4k-120 pro res look for drives with >450mb/s sustained writes. They are out there but are expensive. Samsung drives are mid grade.

One last thing. The internal storage is plenty fast for anything. It clocks in around 1600 MB/s for write and 1200 MB/s for read. So it must be heat dissipation as the reason it needs to offload ProRes at high bitrates and frame rates to external storage. Even regular 4k/30 for clips lasting upwards of 1 hour, or more, will get the phone pretty hot. Indoors is usually no problem, but get outside, especially when you’re not in the shade, and the phone will shut down. 15 minutes clips are fine, but for people like me that produce long-form interviews where the camera never stops, this would be unacceptable if I wanted to, for some weird reason, shoot in 120 fps. So yeah, to your other point, 15 minutes should satisfy most situations using these settings.

Hi. Just on that point of recording externally. As other apps will record internally what the Apple Camera App doesn't. And yes, the internal storage is easily capable of the speeds. I think a possible reason for pushing the data externally, as far as the Apple Camera App is concerned. Is maybe because Apple don't like the idea of the internal storage being either filled up too quickly or there may even be concerns about wearing out the NAND. Filling the internal storage quickly may also lead to a lot more time answering support calls from customers. Maybe filling up a cloud backup is more headache than it's worth to Apple and the associate calls from disgruntled customers complaining about how their iPhone chewed up all their mobile data allowance. I know it's unlikely that "regular" phone users will be using "pro" features but in my experience, if there's an option there, many people will try it even if they don't understand or need it. Saying all that, I generally don't second guess anything that Apple does anyway, as whatever makes financial sense to them, which it quite obviously does, is quite often something that I can't wrap my head around 😆 Cheers, Dave.

Love the tests! Some thoughts. Something changed with how the iPhone records video and I don't know when it happened. For some reason it records in VFR (Variable Frame Rate) rather than CFR. At least with most camera apps on the phone. I tested an iPhone 15 Pro Max with the native, Filmic Legacy, Black Magic, MoviePro, and Moment apps. Only the Moment app yielded CFR. I can't explain why this happened. Out of curiosity, I had MediaInfo look at some iPhone 11 Pro footage I shot earlier this year using the MoviePro app and it show CFR. I have a clip shot on an iPhone X using FilmicPro (now Legacy) that was VFR and all the iPhone 11 Pro clips using Filmic are the same. The Osmo Pocket (original) shoots CFR as does the Parrot ANAFI. In your clips, if you look at the pop-up window in MediaInfo you'll see "Frame rate mode: Variable" along with a Minimum Frame Rate and a Maximum frame rate. The reason for this is that these are not video cameras. So, over the course of the recording the phone (all phones BTW) will adjust the frame rate during the recording to accommodate the physical limitations of the device. With that said, my memory of Filmic is that it forced CFR, but that was when I switched to using the iPhone 8 as my sole video camera. I did use the 7 as well, but it wasn't my sole video camera at the time. Camcorders and Cinema cameras do use CFR. As far as other digital cameras, mirrorless, and DSLRs, I don't know as I don't have those (nor do I have a Cinema camera so I'm making an assumption there). I do know camcorders do, at least my consumer grade Canon from over 10 years ago does. Many of these devices are not dedicated video cameras, and as such, don't have the heat dissipation and possibly the hardware to sustain the data rates that CFR requires for long recording. I know the heat dissipation in DSLRs along with an outdated EU tax concerning DSLRs were primary reasons for the 29:59 time limit on video recording. And some other cameras (Digital, DSLR, etc.) had lower limits due to heat. But this is getting into uncharted territory for me since I can only truly comment on equipment I use. So somewhere along the way, the iPhones changed and the camera apps either didn't change with it, or the programmers didn't notice...except for the Moment camera app. The least likely of the "pro" apps IMO to actually ensure CFR. Now is this why you're getting dropped frames at 120 FPS? In theory, no. VFR should help mitigate that, but if there is something in the data path that's overheating or just creating some kind of buffer overflow, even for just a short time, then it's going to slow things down and cause frame drops. As a side note, that iPhone X clip is 55:49 in length. Its Minimum frame rate was 0.053 FPS and its Maximum was 31.579 FPS. It shows a Frame rate of 29.505. So it was "close enough" to the target of 30 to work. I had no sync issues with it as it's really the audio sampling rate being the same between devices that's important - I use external audio recorders and then sync in post. Hope this helps, and I'm accurate in my thinking!
@WineWorldTV
@WineWorldTV 4 дня назад
Hmmm, the iPhone 11 Pro clip was a 2 second clip. I thought it was a longer clip so it didn't have enough time to become a VFR clip I guess. So scratch that bit about it doing CFR from earlier this year. I have several other clips using that phone and the MoviePro app and they are all VFR. Even clips dating back to 2021 on the iPhone 11 Pro using Filmic are all VFR. And clips using the iPhone X and Filmic from 2019 and 2018 are also VFR. So it's pretty much dependent on the app. I found some iPhone X clips using the Moment app from 2019 (pretty much when it came out?) and those are CFR.

Hi. Thanks for your very detailed comment 👍 The one thing that I can definitely say is that there is some weirdness going on. I'm not entirely sure that Mediainfo is reading the files correctly. I have seen it misreport on "proper" video cameras that I have. Maybe there's odd metadata in the ProRes file as well. I'm still not sure that the files are VFR. I have done a lot of testing with the Blackmagic Camera App and done manual frame advancing in a timeline with the same frame rate as the files and not noticed any interpolated or duplicated frames. Which is what happens when using VFR in a CFR timeline/project. I'm also familiar with how VFR handles in an NLE, as I have had a number of action cameras over the years that use VFR to compensate for exposure. Also, ProRes as a standard does not support VFR. Now I'm not ruling out that Apple may have gone against their's and industry standards, as they have form for doing this and I don't trust them. However, if they have sneaked in VFR within certain scenarios, all they will be doing is shooting themselves in the foot, but again, they are also masters of doing that as well. BTW, I like certain Apple products (especially iPad Pro) but I do not rate them as a company and I'm far from being a fanboy. If they have sneaked in VFR, it maybe within certain instances of the codec being used and particular gamma settings , rec.709, LOG etc. And it may well be getting used as part of the exposure routine. However, the issue that I had with 120FPS being recorded as 100FPS in a recent previous video and certain things in this video, are definitely nothing to do with this. I ran some more tests with fast SSDs and had inconsistent results with the bitrates being sent over USB. I have a suspicion that the phone itself, maybe how it buffers/caches or even its USB subsystem, have problems and it's not the Apps, or at least the 3rd party Apps. I've also had others reporting similar issues in the comments. Anyway, more bring testing 😆 Thanks again for the time you very obviously took with your comment 👍 Cheers, Dave.

Using those drives will be the same as a USB 3.2 Gen 2 which top out around 1250 MB/s. David has already established (the only one that I'm aware of) that the "Thunderbolt" port doesn't actually fully support the full data transfer spec, but it is good enough for regular ProRes.

@@WineWorldTV Hi. You are absolutely correct. Apple do have issues with 2x2 on their Macs (I think even all the current ones). However, I'm not sure if this extends to the portable devices but it would not surprise me if it did, as Apple obviously don't have any issues with not sticking strictly to industry standards. I mean, seriously, they'll accept a 40Gb/s request but not a 20Gb/s one and I think maybe not even a 10Gb/s request via 2X2. So with that said and no matter how good a T9 may be with other hardware and operating systems, I would just avoid them if using any Apple products even though there's nothing wrong with the T9. I think I am starting to narrow down a potential cause for some of the issues and I think it may be the Apple hardware itself. Having tested a number of fast drives, I have now seen very random inconsistencies that are looking totally random. Even in a previous video where my phone recorded 100FPS instead of 120FPS, which I initially thought may have been an indication of VFR as part of the exposure routine. The same drive then recorded a proper 120FPS take, only a short one, but with no issues. I'm just testing to see about using some of my Thunderbolt SSDs via a dock. While this is far beyond what is necessary for the 10Gb/s bandwidth of the phone. It would flood the USB bus and the drives being used have minimum sustained write capabilities beyond even 10Gb/s. Now even if this does work, I still wont see anything near the 1250MB/s (10Gb/s) of the USB bus speed (overhead etc.) and the speeds may not even be beyond the 926MB/s I had in a recent speed test video. However, if dropped frames were to occur, I think I would be safe in pointing the finger at the iPhone's hardware or maybe firmware or software. There may even be a simpler answer. The iPhone may simply not like the controller being used in the connected enclosure, dock or SSD. If the results of those tests are interesting I will do a video. Cheers, Dave.
