I’ve been so set on an medical intervention free delivery but I’m approaching past my EDD and my doctor wants to induce before 41 weeks, so I scheduled an induction for 40+5 days. Been watching a bunch of videos on induction and positive experiences with induction so I feel more confident going into it. Thank you for this video! 💕

Unless there's some medical underlying reason beyond being overdue, there's no reason to induce before 41 weeks. In fact, statistically most babies arrive 40+3 or +4. I'm living in Scandinavia where infant mortality is half of the US and here they only induce at 42 when overdue! Scandinavian due date is actually set at 40+3 based on research. Just know that you can decline induction which severely increases risks of interventions. Doctors can make bad decisions based on their own convenience. You can ask for frequent monitoring instead of induction to be sure baby is doing well. Take care ❤

I fully support the other comment. Feel free to refuse induction, unless there is a medical reason. I had two healthy babys birthed at 41+5 without induction. I was so happy to have a doctor who was not pressuring me for an induction before 42+0

I was medically induced. Preeclampsia. I had misoprostol (spelling?) Foley balloon Pitocin It’s a very long process. I went in Friday afternoon and babe was not born until 6am Monday morning. The epidural, which was also medically indicated to lower BP, was a turning point for me. After I got the epidural I fell asleep and was 10cm in 4 hours. So if you’re getting induced keep that in mind. Getting the epidural really helped me relax.

Thank you for sharing your experience! I'm going in Sunday night for cervical ripening (Ballon Sunday evening, pitocin starting the following morning, and I plan to get epidural asap!) I hope it goes as fast as yours once I get the epidural! Thanks again for sharing!

Thank you for sharing this video Dr. Ali 🧡 Both of my requests for an elective induction ended up becoming a medical induction. The first time I requested 39 weeks my doctor scheduled me to go in because of discomfort, anxiety and BP spikes with no official diagnosis. The doctor on call was not the kindest and pretty much bullied me out of the L&D so I came back a week later when my doctor was on call. By 40 weeks, the protein in my urine was so high I was right on the cusp of pre eclampsia, my doctor said if the protein was 2 points higher she would be doing an emergency c-section but because we seemed to be doing well..she at that point made it a medical induction. The 2nd time around I requested an induction at 39…then 40 weeks but it wasn’t approved till I went over my due date at 41 weeks, therefore becoming medical induction. Both ended successfully in a vaginal birth with no medical complications for us afterwards..Maybe it was better timing because both times my cervix was slightly dilated and soft. This time I’m going in a few days after 39 weeks…my cervix seems to be dilated a bit and soft. I hope they don’t turn me away again 😂

Great video, you’re very clear and thorough in explanations for laypersons! I have a quick question - Can pregnant patients have all of these procedures done? what would a schedule of these procedures look like? I’m not pregnant and don’t plan to be for a long time, but i hope that when i am that i have a doctor as thorough and caring as you!!

I wish I never got induced. I was a surrogate and got induced at 39 weeks and 4 days. It took 10 hours until he was born. Had to get a blood transfusion and Baby was just not ready to come out yet. Would not recommend unless it’s for health reasons ❤

Agreed. Talking to the OBs and MFMs at my clinic, one was really frank with me and explained that the most traumatic experiences are those of women who spend days labouring, usually because they've been induced. And even then, an induction doesn't mean you'll not end up with a C-section.

I agree! I had to get induced at 39 weeks because of high blood pressure but not pre-eclampsia and I feel like it would have been pretty okay to just wait a few more days. I didn't know I could say no. My first two pregnancies were all natural labors and were manageable, I still didn't get an epidural with this last one but being induced was waaaaaay more painful and intense. Do not recommend unless really really needed.

I got induced at 39wks bc baby had no more space to keep growing in my tiny self! She was my first so I wasn’t effaced or anything. Started with the foley balloon, broke my water and started pitocin. Nothing was painful until after pitocin and my epidural didn’t work the first time so it was super painful until I got the 2nd epidural and took a nap before my delivery. Best thing ever.

I was induced at 35wks due to preeclampsia plus they wanted to get the baby out before she started declining cuz she was an IUGR. Cooks catheter over night, then pitocin. From the time I felt uncomfortable contractions to the time she came out it was about 1hr. Felt like my body had no time to adjust but we both came out of it healthy. Idk if I'd rather have a longer labor or not.

Can you talk about thyroid issues and getting pregnant? I had my left side remove and my endocrinologist prescribed me levothyroxine due to only having one side plus my TSH is at 2.7 and she said it supposed to be at 2.5 or less.

I just had an induction. After 27 hours since starting oxytocin and 3 hours of final stage labour untill 8-9 cm dilation, I asked for a C-section. Those final contractions are no joke and I got tired…I was afraid of complications and thought I didn’t have the strenght to wait till 10 cm dilation and then push for who knows how many hours. I do feel like I failed though…

You didn’t fail!! You got your baby here safely, and that’s what matters. I know that’s easy for me to say, but you shouldn’t beat yourself up for doing what was best for your body.

You didn’t fail! Inducing labor is not to be taken lightly. I personally wouldn’t induce unless absolutely necessary, but you can only make the best call for you. Glad you and your baby were okay!

Lol this might be a dumb question but is their such thing as getting an epidural too early? I guess my concern would be getting it too early and it wearing off

Hi Dr.Ali! (If you have time i have a question) First off, I hope all is going fantastic with yourself, Corey and your new baby girl! So happy for you all! I'm very glad u made this video! I'm current 38w4days pregnant today, 2nd pregnancy, I had my 1st son 19 years ago (went into labor naturally, had my water broken and pitocin to help speed things up AND an epidural, (healthy pregnancy, labor & delivery)). I am now 38 y.o. advanced maternal age. Healthy pregnancy/0 complications. However I am scheduled for elective induction of labor Dec.11th for convenience for myself, family and midwife's schedule, I will be 39w5days at that time. Can you please give me your opinion on if it is more painful to have an elective induction of labor, (i will be admitted the night prior for cervical ripening). Another dr is telling me it is much more painful to be induced than if i were to go into natural labor. Btw I am opting for an epidural a.s.a.p! Thank you in advance for any advice! (And this is all tentative planning if baby doesn't surprise us beforehand) 😊

Not Dr.Ali obviously, but the general consensus is that induction tends to be more painful. One reason may be that pitocin does not cross the blood brain barrier like oxytocin (the naturally produced version of the hormone) so it doesn't have the same positive "feel good" effects in the brain. However, there are women that have induced labors and a vaginal birth while unmedicated (my mom was one of them), so it is something that some women are able to cope with. Mental and physical preparation can definitely help you have a positive experience, regardless of the birth you choose.

Hi! I have had two pregnancies all natural with no epidurals and one pregnancy where i had to be induced and being induced definitely was more intense and more painful, still no epidural. I will say that once I had the pitocin, the baby was born pretty fast. I started with pills to soften the cervix the night before and morning until I dilated to a 3 and at 10 am they started pitocin, slowly bringing the dosage up and baby was born at 2 pm with no epidural. I never cussed or yelled with my other two pregnancies, this one had me cussing and trying to keep calm 😅

Is a uterine/pelvic organ prolapse considered a medical reason to induce or would it still be considered elective induction ?

@countryway1970

Anything before 39 weeks would have to be a medical induction. They don’t offer an elective induction prior to that.

Why is induction of labor recommended for advanced maternal age?
@user-kt6fn8cg2i
@user-kt6fn8cg2i 7 месяцев назад
Bc the placenta can give out earlier. Slightly higher risk of stillborn.
