Wow 😲 I'm 68 he explains the feeling better than anyone I've heard . Happy New Year 🎆 Dave was one of the guys who kept the Rights to his music & was also good friends with Freddy Mercury which I was surprised to find out 👍

This was a great introductory speech.

i hear a lot poeple laugh when he brings up the more primative times, but those times were were made us what we are today. i wish I could go back and live in thoe days.

@@luannabbate2624 I suspect that the people laughing were not born at the time to enjoy the music of the DC5. Frustrated and angry young men who want to discount anything that they can't appreciate. And there is probably a lot that they don't appreciate.

It was such a special time for those of us who lived it. There will never be music as good as that again. Today's isn't even music.

Both The British and American artists back then were humongous! Too bad decline has hit everywhere culturally, no more of those great musicians around. There are some but they are not as iconic and the times don't lend themselves for great music to develop. We are living in technological Zombi-land today with so many people glued to a silly cell phone screen all the time!

Dave Clark Five was my favorite band. Way above the Beatles for me.

I was that kid...and all my neighbors were those kids that Hanks spoke of. Im in tears after having seen and heard this great induction. Those certainly were the days.............miss'em!!!

So right! Dave's speech was from the heart, something that is nearly impossible to get from today's entertainers! The DC5 was the best!

i agree.Beatles, Stones, and DC5 were the biggest groups from England and probably anywhere at the time I'll put the Beach boys in there to different genre but talking body of work and talent.

Bruce15485 Agree with you about Mike Smith's voice. Very powerful - his vocals did so much to elevate the band. There was a documentary on the DC5 and Dave Clark was really shrewd. They had their hand in other venues in addition to the band.

Instead of complaining, just be grateful that they were inducted at all instead of never being inducted. There were many other great bands from the 60s and 70s that still haven't been inducted yet. So hey, better late than never.

Remember that Ritchie Valens was not inducted into the Rock hall of fame until 2001... despite creating one of the most iconic Rock and Roll songs of all time and the only song not in English to be included in Rolling Stones 100 most influential songs of the past 100 years

I bought 2 tickets to a concert by Mike Smith. My wife cancelled out but a co-worker said he and his wife would go with me. He was only in his 30's and probably didn't know who Mike Smith or the DC5 were but they went to see Mike perform. To my surprise his wife stood up and started dancing. Mike stopped performing, pointed at her, and gave her a thumb's up! Later, when they were driving me to the train station, she said that she was surprised that an old performer would sing a punk-rock song. I told her that it was Mike Smith and that the DC5 version was the original.

Were they playing and singing live?? Or were they singing against a backing track? Cause I have never heard them doing a song LIVE every hit I have ever heard them do is just lip sync. Unless I'm daft.

All the people on here who love the DC5 have been conned by one of the greatest con-men in RnR history, DC himself...if there was a Con-Men Hall of Fame he would've been the No1 intrant, above everyone else...a complete a/hole!

I didn't list everyone that was great because I didn't want to be bombastic about it. You know who was great. Fill in the blanks ( as some of you did ). But of all of those you mentioned -- we already knew they were great. It's Mike Smith who is often overlooked. I would have respected someone who had mentioned Colin Blunstone. But you didn't. Eric Burdon, McCartney, yes we know they were great. And no where did I mention Jagger was dead. I think my laundry list was long enough.

Mike Smith and Eric Burdon in my opinion are the 2 best singers in rock. You can find people that sound like Robert Plant and Freddie Mercury. Nobody sounds like Mike Smith or Eric Burdon. House Of The Rising Sun turns 56 today.

He needed a front man vocalist as he can sing only background vocals but Dave Clark handled the business side , protected their copy rights/ publishing as well. He formed the band like a “ Corporation “

@@normatible9795 Mike got ripped off by Dave Clark so badly and was left with hardly any help after his tragic fall. It was Peter Noone and Hermits Hermits among others that came to Mike’s and Charlie’s aid and we as a Fan Club raised the huge amount of money it took to get him a customized van to get around in. Dave Clark was nowhere around.

If music drives the times of your life, the '60's was an incredible time to be "driven", and most people love most the music they grow up with during their influential years. Plenty of music sounded "original" in the '50's, but the musicians confessed being highly influenced by the early R&B music in the American South. Things exploded in the '60's (British Invasion, Motown, Surf Rock, Psychedelic) from the same influences. Creativity continued in the '70's ("garage" rock, Funk, Soul, Glam, Prog, Punk, etc.) and the 80's, (Post Punk, New Wave, Techno, etc.), as often from the UK as the US. Experimentation with other genres existed in those first three decades as well, but was underground, such as fusions with jazz and ambient. Some of the best song writers from those decades even had classical training when growing up. What did rock music share with Folk music - the rural American South, and rock even fused them together. By the 90's, most, some say all, of that original influence, the roots of R&B from the American South, was evaporated by time, leaving only musicians influenced by musicians who were influenced. Hip hop and Rap seem to have emerged slowly from several genres, most primarily funk from the late '70's. The musicians and bands from the '60's, 70's and 80's were the luckiest, since they had a more pure influence from the originators and their original recordings, which they blended into rock music. Unfortunately, those exact circumstances are unlikely to bubble up again. Sad for music.

@lucy bond yes, he was a very clever businessman, it was his band, he was the leader and they were employed by him and paid a weekly wage, nothing wrong with that. I worked for a multimillion dollar business and pretty much ran the operation with 3 or 4 others, we didn't get a cut of the profits, as we didnt own it, the owners didn't do much at all.

+Jerry Wiorek Let me say that I think you are right about the girls being crazy over Dave. However, this girl was crazy over Mike. So much so that it made my boyfriend so jealous. RIP Mike.

Mike Smith was most definitely -- for me -- one of the greatest rock vocalists who ever recorded. Up there with Presley, Lennon, Redding, Jim Morrison, Ray Davies, Roger Daltry and Jagger among others. Many don't realize just how remarkable a vocalist he was. But the truth is in the grooves of those DC5 records. I also thought the sax in the DC5 was the anchoring instrument to their fantastic sound. It was so deep end and I always thought they were recorded better, louder and more aggressive than the Stones on their releases.

JPC Casual listeners might assume that it was "Dave Clark" who was the singer. I think that's why he's so underrated. Had the band been named after a city for instance, perhaps the name "Mike Smith" could have been more well-known and standing along side the greats. Truly an underrated vocalist.

I was 12 in 1964. I missed some of the 'height of hippie-dom". However, yes, 1964-maybe 1973, was the greatest time for possibilities, potentialities, and societal change before the world started going the way it is.
