One of the most successful British Invasion bands of the Sixties, The Dave Clark Five topped the UK charts in 1965 with their iconic pop song Glad All Over. Thundering production set the DC5 apart. Their slick melodic sensibility masked their boom factor: The DC5 were the loudest group in the U.K. until the advent of The Who. Drummer, songwriter and manager Dave Clark provided a perfect foundation for Mike Smiths soulful vocals. Reaching the Top Forty 17 times in just three years, with more appearances on the Ed Sullivan show than the Beatles or the Rolling Stones, the DC5 were an enormous pop phenomenon before disbanding in 1970. The Dave Clark Five have sold more than 50 million records worldwide to date.

Those of us old enough will remember the energy and youth of the British Invasion bands. They were a tonic for the US after JFK's assassination. Beatles foremost, but DC5 , Animals, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Herman's Hermits, even Freddie and the Dreamers, etc. A joyous time and those songs bring us back there in an instant. A classy intro by Tom Hanks, too. It is one thing that the RRHOF got right, finally. Each of us has our own mental HOF delineating who is and who is not, worthy to be inducted. The Cleveland HOF is largely irrelevant, IMHO.

I cried like a baby when I saw my heroes being inducted into the Hall of Fame. Not sure why? It was a long time ago1964, I was 12 and seeing DClark for the first time on the Sullivan show and wanted to start to learn how to play the drums that very night. My parents were so puzzled by my assertion of this very firm goal that I spoke of the next morning in 6th grade. I was blessed to get to see Mike Smith perform at the MoonDog Coronation Ball in Cleveland, Ohio, just 6 months before his tragic fall that left him a tetraplegic....and unable to perform again...he was fantastic and still took my breath away. I absolutely LOVED the DC 5, but even more, I ADORED MIKE SMITH!! Just watching him standing there spread legged pounding out that beat and growling those fantastic lyrics with that killer smile made this pre teen lose her adolescent blues and feel a flutter in her heart and other parts of her body that was purely thrilling.,...that joy that Tom talks about in his speech was palpable and kept you glued to your transistor, day and night, under the pillow when you were supposed to be asleep or carried down the street on your way to school, seemingly permanently attached to your ear...nothing happening nowdays can come close to that euphoria we felt in 1964....their music will live on...and will keep us stomping our feet and singing along at the top of our lungs forever! There’s nothing that even comes close these days.

I bought 2 tickets to a concert by Mike Smith. My wife cancelled out but a co-worker said he and his wife would go with me. He was only in his 30's and probably didn't know who Mike Smith or the DC5 were but they went to see Mike perform. To my surprise his wife stood up and started dancing. Mike stopped performing, pointed at her, and gave her a thumb's up! Later, when they were driving me to the train station, she said that she was surprised that an old performer would sing a punk-rock song. I told her that it was Mike Smith and that the DC5 version was the original.

Mike Smith....one of the greatest rock vocalists that ever laid down a track. Up there with Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Jim Morrison, John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, Mick Jagger, Ray Davies, Otis Redding, Roger Daltry....anyone, absolutely anyone. "Glad All Over," "Bits and Pieces," "Try Too Hard," "Can't You See That She's Mine," "Anyway You Want It," "I Know You," "No Time to Lose," "Because," "You've Got What It Takes," "Over and Over," "I Like It Like That," -- everything. Spectacular. Energetic. His vocals were powerful and he had more soul than 99% of the singers today. Mike Smith...yeah -- I'd put him up against any rock singer. He is not to be forgotten. He was that good. He mattered. Should have had an incredible solo career....thanks Mike for the smile you still put on my face when I listen to your heavy duty performances with the DC5. The DC5 -- that's right, I said Heavy. They produced a wall of sound together when they performed...they were indeed the band that belonged between The Beatles and The Stones. They had that kind of muscle. Read their bio -- it's one of the most impressive in rock history. I play several DC5 covers at open mics and community events all for the joy of music, no money. It was my birthday 1 month after The Beatles First appearance on Ed Sullivan Show. Luckily for me mom observed me playing broom guitar to a Beatles tune blasting from our little AM Radio tuned to WABC top 40 out of NYC. I was surprised with my first guitar that night and treated to seeing The Dave Clark Five in the same night. I was up all night in the upstairs bathroom with my sears silvertone from 1964 or earlier. I'll never forget watching them live on Sullivan one Sunday evening at my great-aunt /uncles house. The WW II generation (my parents) the WW I gen. (aunts/uncles) had such different reactions to their appearance. My mom shocked everyone when she commented, mid performance close up of Mike Smith singing, "Oh, he's cute !" M y dad, who saw all the 'invasion' bands as undermining and a 'threat' to society/youth , glared at my mom as if to say "have you lost your mind ?" Mom was cool.

Did you know that The DC5 also met The Supremes in 1965 when they were on tour in England. Isn't it amazing how The Brits and Motown had this affinity for each other's music.

Somehow I never saw this and feel very sad at the news of the two who were not able to be there owing to a previous engagement with the grim reaper. I love the DC5 and will never forget seeing them in NYC as a teen. Meeting them was a highlight of my youth. Dave had a smile that melted my heart. They were all great to spend time with. They were all really handsome and talented. Nature and time certainly destroys our looks but cannot destroy their talent and legacy. There has been no music since to equal what happened between 1955 and 1970. They had pure talent, lyrics, without digital gadgets, glitz and kitsch. Just raw talent on a stage with a microphone and their instruments.

If music drives the times of your life, the '60's was an incredible time to be "driven", and most people love most the music they grow up with during their influential years. Plenty of music sounded "original" in the '50's, but the musicians confessed being highly influenced by the early R&B music in the American South. Things exploded in the '60's (British Invasion, Motown, Surf Rock, Psychedelic) from the same influences. Creativity continued in the '70's ("garage" rock, Funk, Soul, Glam, Prog, Punk, etc.) and the 80's, (Post Punk, New Wave, Techno, etc.), as often from the UK as the US. Experimentation with other genres existed in those first three decades as well, but was underground, such as fusions with jazz and ambient. Some of the best song writers from those decades even had classical training when growing up. What did rock music share with Folk music - the rural American South, and rock even fused them together. By the 90's, most, some say all, of that original influence, the roots of R&B from the American South, was evaporated by time, leaving only musicians influenced by musicians who were influenced. Hip hop and Rap seem to have emerged slowly from several genres, most primarily funk from the late '70's. The musicians and bands from the '60's, 70's and 80's were the luckiest, since they had a more pure influence from the originators and their original recordings, which they blended into rock music. Unfortunately, those exact circumstances are unlikely to bubble up again. Sad for music.

Dave Clark is truly a gracious and appreciative individual, the humility and thoughtfulness of his words and his acknowledgement of others before himself is rare in an industry full of narcissists.

@lucy bond yes, he was a very clever businessman, it was his band, he was the leader and they were employed by him and paid a weekly wage, nothing wrong with that. I worked for a multimillion dollar business and pretty much ran the operation with 3 or 4 others, we didn't get a cut of the profits, as we didnt own it, the owners didn't do much at all.

wasteofspace20.....Total nonsense, some of you giuys don't know what you're talking about...sadly Tom Hanks as well...Clark ripped off the other members, was completely self-centred and led a pretend band who couldn't, and never did, play live...ever seen seen film of them doing so? There's reels of film of every other RnR band, and solo performer, playing live (even the Monkees) but never the DC5, for the simple reason they couldn't!

Truth: At a New Years party at my aunts house a few years back, one of my uncles had The Battle of New Orleans on repeat...it played for an hour. I finally got tired of it and asked my aunt if I could put on my CD...she was cool with it. I put on my DC 5 CD and literally, the New years shabang that hadn't been banging really did start to bang. It was pretty darn cool. 25 of the 30 people in the house were bopping around. The DC5, doing the job and doing it well.

Long overdue! Have been a fan of the DC5 since 1964. Through the UK fanclub I met a mutual fan in the USA and we have remained friends ever since. For over 40 years!! I have a lot to thank the boys for: their music, their roadmanagers (I befriended one - John B, their looks, their personalities, their fans, and for my friend Lynne in the USA. Mike and Denis, I miss you so much. Dave, that was a great speech. Many congratulations. Thanks for the induction vids!

This comment is 15 years later in 2023. Agree with everyone who says this honor was long overdue. But as one of the witnesses of these years I ask you to reflect for a minute. Maybe it is perfect timing? The DC 5 was and is great Rock and Roll. Always will be. It could not have been honored in the 70's. It was too soon. The 80's was another revolution like the 60's. It was happening so fast and so loud we did not have any moment to reflect. We were having to much fun. The 90's would have been the first time to really look back and do it. But with the emergence of Rap music, it was considered inappropriate to look at it then. 2007 was really the first time when there was a slight lull in the action to say.....Hey. Want about the Dave Clark 5. YEAH! We miss that music. It was so great!!

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think Mike Smith was way way Underrated for his contribution to the DC5. He was the Lead singer. And it seemed that the girls were always googly eyed over Dave Clark's looks more than anything in this band, correct? I am a keyboardist also, and I always idolized Mike (mostly) in this band. But all in all each member as well were/are Great!

Mike Smith was most definitely -- for me -- one of the greatest rock vocalists who ever recorded. Up there with Presley, Lennon, Redding, Jim Morrison, Ray Davies, Roger Daltry and Jagger among others. Many don't realize just how remarkable a vocalist he was. But the truth is in the grooves of those DC5 records. I also thought the sax in the DC5 was the anchoring instrument to their fantastic sound. It was so deep end and I always thought they were recorded better, louder and more aggressive than the Stones on their releases.
@jayanxiety

JPC Casual listeners might assume that it was "Dave Clark" who was the singer. I think that's why he's so underrated. Had the band been named after a city for instance, perhaps the name "Mike Smith" could have been more well-known and standing along side the greats. Truly an underrated vocalist.

I still own the first 5 DC5 albums, all of them well worn. My cousin was a Beatlemaniac while I touted the DC5 as the best of the English bands. She was ultimately right as DC5 couldn't transition away from the early '60s sound, but it sure was (and still is) fun to listen to. But Tom did put his finger on something pretty much forgotten about early 1964 was the despair being felt in America by the assassination of JFK a few months before. People today can't understand the trust we felt in our government in 1963 (rightfully so!) and what the loss of our young president meant. Those British bands really lifted our spirits when we needed it most.

This is the band that made Eddie Van Halen want to play music...it was drums though, he wanted to make the sound that Dave made on his drums during "Glad All Over." Sadly, the lead singer that we all used to think was Dave Clark (at least in my house) was Mike Smith who died only 11 days before this ceremony was recorded. Mike had broken his back and became paralyzed from the waist down a few years earlier in a freak accident. GREAT band with an amazing catalog of songs. I still miss hearing all those great songs coming out of the radio in Buffalo, NY. WGR55 on the AM dial (back when WGR still played music, it's all sports talk now). Miss you, Mom. Thank you for the childhood filled with great music!!
