The SHMAX "Ultimate Desk" This one was a big job - aren't they all! Late last year (2018) I had a enquiry on making a special last forever computer desk. That enquiry turned into doing some design concept sketches that could be used as a starting point and we got going. The customer, Max needed some specific features and functionality built in. The desk had to be shipped overseas to San Francisco (I live in Townsville, Australia) so we decided that the desk needed to be Flat Packed to keep freight costs realistic. Max was pretty good on CAD and he made a model in Fusion 360. In October 2018 keen to get started I made the desk legs and upper structure. Life got in the way and the project stopped until June 2019 when I got a re-start on the project. It is now complete and I am very happy with how it all came together and how it looks. There is one aspect that was disappointing; I couldn't make the "Hatch", being made from Brass, the Hatch is a beautiful Art Deco themed design in the desk top that would allow access to cables and cords etc. A true work of art but I'm afraid that it was a little out of my reach to be able to achieve in all honesty.
Steel was Blackened with a chemical Agent then protected with Penitrol Sealer. The Walnut was finished with Pure Tung Oil.
Special thanks to Max - for his endless patience and reaching out to me to help make this project.
And also to;
Studio Dubbeld - studiodubbeld.com for sourcing the American Walnut, the Tung Oil and Wood Butter.
Welding Industries Australia (WIA) for such a great welder
MASSO CNC Controllers - for their brilliant CNC controller
3DTEK.XYZ for creating an affordable and very capable CNC Router
Mark Harriss for the Forme Industrious Maker Plate.
My Patreon Supporters ;) Thank you!!
I hope to see you in the comments and thanks for watching.
Kind Regards
Scott Turner

Hi folks, this is Max: client, desk jockey, nit-picker, CAD modeler, feature-creeper, and co-designer of this wonderful contraption. Not to wax poetic, but I think there comes a time in every man's life when he realizes he needs a new desk and hires a complete stranger on RU-vid halfway around the world to make him a new one (well, Scott may be the exception, here--he would probably just build his own desk--though I believe he buys his pants from a different channel). What I'm trying to say here is thank you, Scott. When I say that this is the desk of my dreams, I mean that I literally intend to do most of my sleeping at it from here on out. All meals are of course a given. And someday, when my children ask about the desk they were conceived on top of, I will share this video with them and we will gaze in wonder at the skill, dedication, beer and colorful language that went into its construction. To all the people asking in the comments if the client is a rich guy: give us a break, it's a desk, not a DeLorean. Oh hey, that gives me an idea for a desk! Scott, can we--eh, never mind. Next time. I think a few people were asking to see what the desk looks like once it's all rigged up; fair enough. I will try to put together a video of my own showcasing it in its full glory before it disappears under a mound of pizza boxes and Diet Coke cans. And to those of you providing insightful, constructive criticism and suggestions: you are wrong. The desk is perfect, and you should know better. Just kiddin'. You guys are great. You may have a point about the casters, and it's too bad The Hatch didn't come together, and now that you mention it we probably SHOULD have found room for a rotisserie grill, but these are all issues that I will work out with Scott for Desk 3.0 sometime next year, or as soon as he stops blocking my calls. Scott is the real deal, guys. He had a great attitude throughout, was always upbeat, and put up with me even at full deskzilla. A true pro. This desk is a one of a kind and must never fall into the wrong hands, but if you're in the market for something nearly as nice, I think you owe it to yourself to drop him a line. Thanks again, Scott!

Hey, just because you wrote those wonderful, generous and kind words; and I smiled and laughed the whole time, that you are getting a discount! It was a truly memorable project! I was going to the delivery folks today, but, maybe I just keep the desk. I need something in my shed to stack my pallet wood on :) It was a privilege working with you Max and I sincerely hope you enjoy the desk. If kids are conceived on it, then all the better. Cheers!

@@doubledarefan ''Is not that covered by health insurance❓'' Health insurance will cover the medical intervention and may not necessarily ''fix'' the damage especially in the case of partial or total loss of use of one or both hands. However, a hefty private insurance protection of a few millions would, in let's imagine the above mentioned worse case tragedy, certainly not compensate for the abominable loss but it would certainly help to alleviate part of the ordeal. I have noticed on the web that many musicians and other artists have had there hands insured for incredibly large amounts of money. I understand that my comment is quite gory but how else can it be answered.

Really fantastic. The superlatives must be worn out by now. Beautiful and inspiring. The work and collaboration remind of Michael Pollan's book "A Place of My Own". where he designs and builds a small studio of a building, with much intention and thoughtful engagement. The only difference, at least in the abstract sense, is that he subtitles the book "The Education of an Amateur Builder". There is nothing amateur about this desk and its design and construction. It's the work of a mature artisan. Thank you for sharing it and the collaboration in design.

You can break your tack welds apart with your hands?!! Well I can break ALL my welds apart with my hands! Huh! Who's the tough guy now huh! I always learn things off you - like don't pick up hot bits of metal. You remember my first welding attempts? Well I actually did a bit more just last weekend - my second ever welding project. I just love arc welding because as long as I stick with it I can comfort myself with the thought that if I only had a mig welder - I'd be awesome 😆 Two wireless chargers .. that's class. Mate! That's not the only thing that's class ... phew! where to begin! Rated 100 hots!! 💯🔥 cheers!

Have you ever tried heating the steel with the torch as a finish? The oxide that forms gives it a nice blueish uniform color. Kinda blends the areas that have been welded and grinded in with the rest. Apply a bit of linseed oil to it prior to heating, and it will end up with a more charred and darker color (and some rust prevention). /cheers

@ScottTurnerformeindustrious 5 лет назад
Yes I have. I do bluing on small pieces, but for larger pieces it's a lot harder. In fact I tried on this project and could not get the heat needed. I might make a video on steel finishing one day. Cheers!

I just wanted to write a follow up to my previous comment, was hesitant about writing it earlier (dunno why, silly really) but having just watched your 100k vid swayed me.... I have just discovered your channel so this vid is the first I watched and it really has impacted me. I watched this just before I went to bed and I couldn't get to sleep (not a lot stops me doing that). I was just so excited. I'm convinced, now more than ever, that making is something that needs to be in my life. How much of my life remains to be seen so we'll see, but it's going to be a fair proportion.😁

Truly wonderful comment. it takes us a long time to understand the truly important things in life (speaking form experience). Pursue a labour of love, a labour of your own choosing and build a life around that. Well that's what I'm trying to do. Hard work, but I have no trouble getting out of bed. All the best with you journey!

Scott, wow just um wow! It's beautiful. Your attention to every detail you don't miss a trick. The ingenuity to turn this into a flat pack brings new meaning to thinking ahead. If you ever get stuck for inspiration just refer to this video (or infact any other video you've uploaded they're all awesome) and tell yourself you made that. Great work Scott God bless.

Mr. Turner, you have found your calling. I'm not sure how easy it is to eek out a living making beautiful things like this, but I truly hope that you can continue to inspire the world with your work. With the months and years it takes to design, acquire materials, create and assemble, all while diligently maintaining a channel dedicated to showcasing the same... Well I just can't thank you enough. It is not hyperbole to say we live in a world where we're all dying to get the latest junk from China, only to discard it with such carelessness that it now begins to clog, ferment and disrupt the natural systems of God's pure oceans. You, sir, are doing your part to show us _all_ a different way by methodically building items so cherished, that their care is assured for generations. Thank you.

Such a privilege to see construction of a unique piece of work from the ground up. All credit to you, I dream of having half your skills. But as you say the far and wide reach of the web is truly amazing. If nothing it has certainly inspired me to actually get off my arse and do something with mine. Incredibly high quality items meticulously crafted with only one objective in mind to surpass your customers expectations.... a very lucky chap. Keep up the great work!

The way the desk is designed it looks like it should transform into something, perhaps an even more elaborate desk, perhaps a briefcase, it just has this look about it that it's about to do something weirdly mechanical and unexpected. But no, it's just a really nice desk with a slidey bit. Fantastic work, as always, a joy to watch.
