Due to the fact that there are 3 of us looking for desk space almost full time here in the home, it became necessary to add to the places where computer work could be done. So my youngest was using a desk I got for free at a garage sale in 1980. I know this because that desk is the first piece of furniture I've refinished. I found it for free between 8th and 9th Grade and there are photo's somewhere of me sanding, staining, and applying lacquer to it after I broke my leg on Labor Day of 1980. I was in the cast as I was redoing this desk. Well, since the desk was so old it was free in 1980, that would officially make it an antique. l can't believe I'm that old, or that exactly 40 years since the day I wrecked a Yamaha Enduro 250 and broke my leg I'm writing about it. I didn't even make the connection until this very moment. Well, antiques weren't exactly designed with the students that would be using computers in 2020 in mind. It would probably still work for someone who is lefthanded, but it was very awkward for a righty.
All of that tangent out of the way, I built with the help of my wife and daughter and some design input from my good friend Greg @themakerlife on Instagram, an Industrial style live edge desk. The top I am pretty sure is Red Oak that I got from a local tree removal service owner who also happened to own a Wood Miser and had a pile of slabs about every 10ft the majority of his backyard which was about 2 acres. He also lives about one mile from me.
I also had stored at a friend's garage @henicomachineworks (also Instagram) some material that he and I pulled out of a crawl space over a year ago that worked amazingly for this project. I wanted some square or rectangle tube and we just happened to have some 3x5 inch with 1/8 inch wall tubbing. I think we had 4 - 48-inch tubes. This created some design issues. I came up with a Z pattern leg and initially, I wanted to do all three in the same orientation. Before I started cutting though, I sent handwritten plans to my friend Greg (mentioned earlier) to ensure I had the angles right. He's a Fusion 360 wizard and whipped something up in minutes. I asked him to play around with the orientation and placement a little because in my hand-drawn version the legs just overwhelmed the slab. It just wasn't working. He sent a few renderings in Fusion that looked exactly like the finished product you see here and I couldn't be happier. In fact, there is some squabbling in the house over where the desk goes once my daughter is out of the house. Let's just say, that makes me happy. ;-)

That came out great Chad! The Z leg design with inset diagonals make the details much more interesting. There's also nothing better than using "scrap" materials to make something valuable. The Fireball tools look super nice. I need to find an excuse to pick up a bunch of his stuff.
@ManCrafting
@ManCrafting 3 года назад
Thanks. That means a lot coming from someone who designs for a living. While the Z design was what I envisioned my buddy Greg put it in Fusion and played with the positioning of the 3 pieces to get this final look which I love. As for Fireball. His products are amazing. JF from @apexwelding talked me into my first set. I’ve bought a lot more since that time and plan on even more. You won’t regret that purchase one second.

I’m using 3” x 3” angle with 1.5” x 2 tubing on the base. I work at a sheet metal shop and will fab a table top this week. Super basic. I’ll forward a picture if you want.

Absolutely. I can access to a lot of material and can either TIG or MIG aluminum so the practice would be practical and good. More importantly I’d like to see the pic.

Beautiful finished product! I find your story behind it interesting as well. I know you said that you didn’t get footage of the setups, but your detailed explanation worked great for me. BTW, welds are looking really good!
@ManCrafting
@ManCrafting 3 года назад
Works by Solo thanks for all of that. I personally liked the look of the welds but... I probably could have done better. I’m going to take some tips from those with more experience and give them a try. Based on the amount of sparks I see in the video, I may have the wire coming in too fast. I will try that same setting with a little slower wire feed and see how it looks.
@42Fab
@42Fab 3 года назад
I'll keyboard warrior because I know you'll actually take the input. Turn up your heat some on those welds. When you get that hump in the middle of the weld seam, it's from either too much wire or not enough heat. Monster of a desk though!
@ManCrafting
@ManCrafting 3 года назад
Thanks for the advice. I always appreciate useful welding input. I have some tube left over I can cut up and practice with a few different settings. I did kind of like the look of the welds on the beefy legs, but I’d rather do it right.

Great job but I did notice two weeks and how many finishes later lol I take it was longer than a sunday lol. looks amazing
@ManCrafting

It was a comedy of errors. I couldn’t get the brush on lacquer to look good. Then I tried epoxy which started repelling from some areas as it was being spread, so I scraped that off and let cure. Then sanded that off and finally used a spray on Lacquer. About 7-8 layers. It looks great now. Then I also was waiting on my Amazon Prime leveling feet. That took 9 days. Good thing I pay for Prime. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Nice table! One minor observation, you want to select reverse cut direction in Sheetcam, so that your inside contours run counter clockwise and your outside contours run clockwise. The 'best cut" is on the right side of the torch travel. I know you use an HTP machine but see here for description: www.hypertherm.com/en-US/learn/spark-the-blog/what-does-the-good-side-and-bad-side-of-a-plasma-cut-mean/ HTP may be different so check with them.
@ManCrafting
@ManCrafting 3 года назад
Greg9504 thanks! That’s a great tip. I’ll need to pay attention to that when I’m setting up a cut. I guess it pays to read a manual every now and then.

Hey Chad, curious what yiu wete talking about when you mentioned the river table and can't say "that" word. Do you plan on doing a river table ot one of those epoxy tables at all, anything in the works?
@ManCrafting
@ManCrafting 3 года назад
This is the reason for the comment. “Greg Klassen has applied to trademark the word "River" in regards to furniture design. He claims to have created the design in 2014 and that the trademark would let consumers know that they are buying an original. Klassen's social media accounts have been overrun with negative comments, including many from people who have either made or seen the design pre-dating 2014. Klassen has since shut down comments on his social media accounts.”
