I'll also be at the road america race. I was there last year and the garages are completely different than at indy. At road America the garages are all run out of the semi trucks they are not permanent buildings. Still very cool but much different than indy. Also at road America you can get much more driver interaction than at indy which is awesome.

I've purchased the paddock pass at Iowa more years than not. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to have a lot of time to study the equipment, and autograph seekers are well aware it's the place to be. One year it even got me a tour of the media center with a photographer. While I don't recall his name I'll always be grateful and it's an experience I'll never forget.

Awesome video, David. I've been waiting 37 years to go to Indy ever since Danny Sullivan's Spin and Win in 1985... AND I'M GOING TO BE THERE ON FRIDAY! I'm sure I'll see you in Gasoline Alley and I'll make it a point to shake your hand. Keep up the good work. With the passing of the great Robin Miller and an aging but still legendary Marshall Pruitt, someone has to carry the torch into the future and you are just the man to do it. :-)

I used to LOVE walking through the paddock when I was a kid in Surfers Paradise every year, and checking out the awesome machinery being worked on in the garages. This video captures that feeling perfectly! But this needs to be an hour long, see if you can be let into a few garages for some really close looks, and maybe point the mic at a few random mechanics and see what they have to say. I want to see more! Thank you 😊

I went on the VIP tour of IMS in March (a tour I HIGHLY recommend). The tour of Gasoline Alley was quite different then. It was very quiet. Thanks for the May tour!

Just a tiny correction. When the "new" Garage Area opened in 1986, Shierson Racing actually had Garages A-1 & A-2. Foyt typically had A-3 thru A-8 (+/-). Shierson had A1-A2 through 1990, and it wasn't until either 1992 or 1993 that Foyt took over A1 and A2 as well.

It's kind of crazy to think back to the days when there were more cars than garage stalls. I remember that year when they were under the shade trees on Hulman Blvd. Have not had a good look at the garage area since 2016 so this was quite interesting.👍

Looks familiar and hasn't changed a whole lot. I was there early May 1994, doing some simulation work for Newman-Haas, when Nigel was driving for them.

David, had a thought, perhaps explain how tech works in Indy car these days given there's no tech pad (at IMS) on pit lane on qualification days. With teams going through tech and then required to "be in line" for qualifications at a certain time. This means teams have to predict what the weather and track conditions will be relative to their place in line and car set up.

When you mention "road/oval chassis" or "smoothing Sato's oval chassis", what's the difference between the two and what do you mean by smoothing?

I have the same question for the first part of the question and have always wondered. But by smoothing he just means working it all out and getting it as perfect as possible.

Generally teams have a "Road Course" car and an "Oval" car because the setups are VERY different. Teams with the budget will have a separate car that's specifically for the 500, and will spend huge amounts of time making sure all the body panels are aligned, smooth and gap free as possible to reduce drag.
