We got an awesome opportunity to drive some INDY cars at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, courtesy of our friend Dave Rogers at the NASCAR Driving Experience. The next morning, we departed Las Vegas back to Orlando International Airport. On the arrival, we hit some of the worst wake turbulence

With turbulence like you encountered you can see why controllers try and get a smaller plane to take off before a large plane . Loved the shot of the plane coming head-on . Nice socks John thanks for the videos cheers Ty

Great video!. I experienced the ride along several years ago. The thing that struck me most was the amount of energy required to fight the g-forces in the corners. Three lap experience exhausted me. It gave me a huge appreciation for the conditioning needed to run those cars.

The recovery from the wake turbulence was an excellent demonstration of your teamwork as pilots. Almost instantaneous response by both pilots...instinctive, and the result of training and experience. Awesome stuff. If I knew you two were in the cockpit I''d be a heck of a lot less stressed when flying. With old age I've become a bit of a control freak I guess. Probably part of why I don my best to weasel out of flying these days, LOL.

Pretty cool....even if they do limit your speed out there! If you've never driven that fast, though, it's a major rush! My son and i own a street stock team, and he's going to be making his 'debut' racing the big boys at Daytona this next February!! Neither of us has ever tried an indy car, though. Wow that was a BIG hole in the air you hit there - that was just like driving on MA highways, HAHAHA! That Airbus was making one hell of a wake there! I was expecting to hear of spilled drinks in the back. Don't know if the cameras made it look worse than it was, but it looked pretty bad from where I was sitting! Nice recovery from that one - cat-like reflexes. 😁👍 Everyone is racing lately! Just watched Greg (Premier1Driver) run around a road course in a Porsche in his latest vid. Looks like a blast! Interesting discussion regarding readbacks. You have concluded correctly that failing to correct an incorrect readback is all on the controller. During my 18 months in Quality Assurance, it was the #1 cause of operational errors (incidents resulting in less than standard separation). I cannot tell you how many controllers I interviewed after an error who swore the pilot read back the correct altitude. Exactly that same number were horrified when they heard the tape. Why didn't the controller catch it? You hinted at it. During a busy inbound session (in particular) such as you were experiencing, the controller is managing several tasks simultaneously, as well as thinking about the next two or three things he/she (more below) has to do. What I concluded in my investigations is that when you give a clearance (while simultaneously writing it down), you're planning on the next clearance, almost always to someone else, but you know, listening to the readback. Everyone does. The problem is you have a preconceived notion of what that readback should be--after all, there were only the two of you in the conversation--so without thinking, you set that readback on the back burner while it's being given so you can get on to your next task. You "hear" what you expect to hear, not what was actually said. Even after being retired for more than 20 years, I instantly recognized Shaun's incorrect readback, although, in fairness, I wasn't working the rush. But that 18 months in QA certainly heightened my awareness. It made me a better controller. Regarding the "he/she": when I hired in at ZJX in 1968, there were only a couple of female controllers. When I got to ZAU in '73, there were several more. By the time I left in '97, we had a lot more, but still nowhere near parity with males. In today's trip it did not escape my notice that the first three controllers (LAS local, LAS TRACon, ZLA) were women as well as the local controller at MCO (and however many others might have been edited out). And each one of them sounded as professional and competent as good controllers ought to. What the hell took so long (he asked, rhetorically)?

Hi, guys. This has become my only "Must See TV." :-) Something I've always wondered about in commercial jets - maybe something for a tech VLOG later? Your windows are ROUND. A couple of them seem to have a silver lining around them (no pun intended). When I fly commercial, the windows are never round, they are usually too small, and always positioned in such a way that I have to crane my neck to see much. What's that all about? Couldn't windows be bigger? Would that weaken the structure? Crazy idea - why couldn't you just have a big panorama window? A vista-dome on top? Even if it were just for 1st-class and private customers - that would be cool. Thanks for all the hard work you put into this - don't know where you find the time.

I was really surprised by the whole scenario. They were descending to 130, the Airbus was at 130 and 10 miles ahead (as I interpreted the video--there may have been an edit that shrank the time element). They followed him in so the Airbus should have always been below them, or at worst, the same altitude. Plus, the A320 is not a heavy jet. The wake turbulence advisory that was given doesn't fit the parameters of wake turbulence advisories (heavy jet or B757, minimum lateral separation). Not that there's anything wrong with giving it, but the Gulfstream shouldn't have been subjected to wake turbulence in the conditions they were flying (as depicted by the video).
@althalus401
@althalus401 5 лет назад
While it is true that wake turbulence is normally found below the level at which an aircraft producing it is flying that is not necessarily always the case. If the wake turbulence is created in rising air, from thermal or wave lift, it is possible that it could be contact at the same level or perhaps even higher.

When you get a sudden unexpected bank like that due to wake turbulance, does it excite the passengers much? What's the worst or most violent wake turbulance you've encountered and how much was the planes attitude disrupted? I noticed the yokes start shaking suddenly a couple CV of seconds before the plane started its sudden unexpected roll to the left so I knew "something" was happening, just wasn't sure what...but when it started that roll it was pretty sudden! Didnt seem like it would be all that scary, just have to react appropriately. If course that's easy for me to say from the safety of my chair on my patio LOL Were I flying it may be much more exciting than I'm thinking it was! Very interesting video Shaun! Race cars looked like a ton of fun and you both did great with such close speeds! 1.x mph difference! This video must of been before your flight to the Chech and Ireland etc...looking forward to those!
@CorporatePilotLife
@CorporatePilotLife 5 лет назад
Thanks Don! This is probably the worst wake turbulence I've seen, but I've seen it like this a few times. We always try to avoid it, but you can't see it, so it's pretty hard sometimes. controlling it afterwards isn't terribly difficult, you just have to get it back to straight and level

You guys are right about the controller not catching the wrong readback. I'm an ATC student and we're taught that if a pilot reads back the wrong thing and we don't catch it then it's our fault because the pilot didn't know they got the readback wrong and if I don't correct it then they are correct to assume they readback the correct instruction.
@CorporatePilotLife
@CorporatePilotLife 5 лет назад
That's what we thought...thank you for the verification!

Corporate Pilot Life No problem! Also an interesting note because I just learned this on Wednesday, but at the end when you guys (and other aircraft in the sector) were given the speed restriction of 170 knots until 5 miles final, that 170 is important because it’s the lowest speed restriction ATC can give turbojets.
@lrodpeterson3046
@lrodpeterson3046 5 лет назад
In theory, by the book. In real life, it might be different. We used 160 for traffic going into ORD for years and that was out in the center, where we weren't supposed to go below 210.
@BelowMinimums

Yeah I definitely hear a lot of incorrect phraseology/ procedures when I listen to liveatc. Everytime we learn a new concept I look for it on liveatc and I'm like "that's not following the 7110.65..." lol

I hold the yoke on takeoff no matter who is flying because Jon has his left hand on the tiller in case he needs to make a steering correction during the first part of the takeoff roll. There is only one tiller and it's on the left side of the cockpit

That wake turbulance was a long way from the 320 considering it was 9-10 miles in front of you! Amazing! I used to park right next to the Columbia river for my lunch hour, about a mile from the east threshold of PDX's northern runway. Jets coming in to land would be pretty low by this point, not sure but 300 ft maybe. Once they touched down I'd go back to reading my book, some minutes later, especially after a big jet landed, I would hear a disturbance in the air, and out on the water I'd see this tight whirlwind moving upriver on top of the water and even some water being disturbed and brought into the air in like little jets, was very odd to see, they would carry on upriver 50 yards or so. Once I noticed a runner on the path experience it and I could tell it took him by surprise. I figured out it was like wingtip vertices as they settled down after the plane went by but at first it seemed really weird, almost supernatural.
@CorporatePilotLife
@CorporatePilotLife 5 лет назад
Isn't it so cool how that happens! If I remember correctly, it sinks at about 300 feet per minute, but there are many factors that will affect that.

Indy and NASCAR was outrageous. The view from the pits gives the true picture. The stands and aerial shots don't do the speed justice. West Coast fan club is getting larger. But, the Maalox moment had to be the turbulence from the Airbus. That was a real "Hershey Squirt" experience, at least for me. (It all has to do with Jon's socks...neutral tones only please.) Good drama, but only when viewed at sea level. Via con Díos

Thanks to you guys, whenever I get on the on ramp, I say spool up, (as I stomp on the gas,) V1, rotate, V2 positive rate, gear up (as I merge with traffic) Unfortunately my wife doesn't understand and calls me a dolt.

Finally I can stop typo'ing my favorite Corporate pilot's names in the comment section. Thank you Shaun and Jon. Now if only you needed visit KRDU. I could make it up to you with some entertainment.

Hi guys, Great video as usual. Question though, Why did our standby Attitude indicator flag on you at about 29:45.? Did it switch to the Standby Batt. or something else going on there ? Never mind, I see now that it lost the localizer for a second there.. I didnt realize it was a nav indicator as well..
@CorporatePilotLife
@CorporatePilotLife 5 лет назад
Yep...it has full ILS capability, so if we have a VOR set into the NAV 1, it will flag like that.

Wake turbulence is at 25:50. Love how the controller asks if PRD69 is recording today. Quite an audience out there!

Love the Coca-Cola socks John and the flyby guys. Question, whats the minimums for different altitudes vs. same altitudes on flybys?

Hi guys Think the effect of the scareybus wake turbulence was a surprise for everyone especially 10 miles out but it was a A321. Imagine if it had of been a B757 or bigger. Pax shaken and stirred lol
