What you say is true, the old Indy 500 was a great event. However, IndyCar was going away because of the cost of innovation had become too great. Roger Penske had shown that with a fat bankroll it was a race for fourth place. Tony George wanted to go back to the "old days" where anyone could compete on an equal footing. The Meyer-Drake (aka Offy) engine was an off the shelf item available to all competitors. The roadster chassis was an open book. For most of the '50's and early '60's you had 33 cars with the same engine, the same basic chassis. Cars were able to compete for years. Calhoun, (#98) the car Parnelli Jones drove to victory in 1963 was driven for 3 years in a row. A year before and the year after his 1963 win. One car, with two different drivers won twice in succession. Mauri Rose won twice in the same car and Bill Holland, his teammate won the following year in a twin of that car. Let me add here that I see the 500 on TV after the event, I see it live and in person. I was 16 before I had to pay to get in to the race and that was because I wanted to sit in line the night before on 16th street. I had already witnessed 6 races at that point, yes I went to the race at 10 years old. I went to qualifications for the first time, with my father, at the age of 3.

What years did you attend the Indy500?

I attended the race in 1995 & 2001. I went to see the race but ended up people watching and admiring the atmosphere. It's a race and more! 🏁🏎

F1 did not boycott it, it’s just that they got an order from their tire company to not race in this track since the tires aren’t safe for the oval. They said that there’s no guarantee at all that drivers won’t be severely hurt or killed. That’s the reason for the last race at Indy. The drivers and the FIA all wanted to race but weren’t allowed due to safety reasons.

If your assertion is correct, who was it then, that would have kicked Tony George out of running IndyCar. Are you sure that Tony George was kicked out of being IMS President? Are you sure that Tony George isn't in charge of Indy anymore? Rob, you seem to have a real soft spot in your heart for Tony George. And when you post your opinions or prejudices on the internet as if they were fact, you blatantly expose the hatred you have accumulated in that soft spot in your heart, that you choose to dump on Tony George. Rob, Tony George deserves your respect and admiration. I do hope your eyes will open some day and lead you to the conclusion that you really have no clue what your are talking about when it comes to the operation and control of the property known as the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. That is a Hulman company asset. Who is the #1 person at The Hulman Company? That would be the Chairman of the Board. That is your kingpin at the top of the food chain. That person is Anton Hulman George. That is Tony Hulman Jr's hand picked successor to guide the Indianapolis Motor Speedway into the 21st century, and Anton Hulman George is the man who has made that track what it is today. Every piece of glass on the front stretch is a Tony George capital improvement. The face of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Today belongs to the sculpter, Anton Hulman George.

Do you have any idea what it would cost to renovate that entire place at one time?

Give it time…Penske will want it to be improved and has way more bucks than the George family did. Tony would have done more, but his sisters wanted to sell the place as soon as their mom finally passed away, so he didn’t have a chance. Not defending him, he wrecked the sport and it almost died, but he was opposed at every turn when trying to spend on the place.
