Yeah, I know there are better versions of this one elsewhere on YT. But I have to admit..this one's not from my own collection.
There's a story here. Two of the people who were my mentors when I first started working races were an older married couple. They died within a month of each other in late 2014.
Unlike many of our blood relations who do not care for the sport, their daughter has preserved, rather than discarded their souvenirs..and has distributed them among those of us who were part of her parents' lives. Posters, hat pins, patches..and something else.
I got two boxes of VHS. They mostly saved the tapes of races they had actually worked. I'm not going to post of any of the F1 stuff, since FOM is such a Godzilla sized monster about their copyright to footage (don't want another strike here!), but they worked Detroit before CART, Montreal, and even made a trip to Australia once.
That being said, I discovered this one. Folks that have been subscribed for awhile should remember me posting up the Spanish language coverage on Univision, because the English language coverage here in Atlanta was pre-empted.
Up in Tennessee (where they lived), someone who knew my friends taped it. I'm throwing this one up over here for them.
That's Jake trying to convince Al Jr. that the damn car's broken at 38min or so. Viv was probably on comm, calling it in.
Apologies (or honestly..NOT!) for the aside..those two people meant a lot to me.
Yeah, this one's not complete, it starts on lap 7 after Boesel is in the wall.
Hobbs mentions Saleen''s racetruck stuff during his miserable pit stop.
Danny shows off his fancy Wondercast! And they look at the "modified" (AKA 'hacked up') steering wheel that goes with it!
Right around 11min 26sec:
Rutherford: "I have a seat that fits it."
Hobbs: "And I just happen to carry it around with me."
Yeah, it never gets out of your system. If you ever got to drive, you want to go drive. That's as true for amateurs as it is for professionals.
AJ is bleeping pissed that all the parts he ordered from Conte are on back order.
Danny finally realizes Dr. Trammell was right. Even Wondercast can't save him from the bumps. Sure was lapping pretty quick before his bones started to separate again, tho.
Mario & Emmo have a nice dice.
Divers and stuff on the river, just in case somebody goes full tilt into the water like in John Frankenheimer's old movie!
And yeah, I miss the days of 'local yellows' and workers being allowed to go push cars. Once upon a time, sanctioning bodies were brave enough to stand up before the scared little bitches that worked for their insurance companies.
Scott will win one of these things one day..but not today. And not with a Judd, either.
Emmo gets it done! No small wonder The Captain decided to hire him later on.

Another class vid. I love watching old races especially from the US. I'm sure in 30 years time I'll look back at today's racing and think the same but the cars seem so tame today. Back then it was all spitting flames, squealing tyres and a bit of oversteer action. Beautiful 😍

+King Greeny , thanks again, sir! I loved CART. Here in the US, being a fan of road racing can be an odd thing. Caring about 'proper motorsport' is often at odds with our national motor racing traditions here..and when the Indycars went road racing in a serious way, I was absolutely stoked. I'm old enough to remember the days when if you wanted to catch the 500 live, you had to get yourself a radio (IIRC, it was not televised live until the early 1970s). These brutal fire-breathing monsters, finally on *my* kind of racetracks? Yeah, I'll take it! High horsepower, low downforce (compared to F1 at the time)? Fantastic stuff. I would actually suggest that Indycar racing during the CART years should be just as legendary as the F1 races of the 1970s. I feel very fortunate that I got to see them in person a couple of times.
