Friedrich Gulda, who first attempted to play in a jazz setting in the mid-'50s after firmly establishing his classical career, is on far stronger ground on this Columbia LP recorded in early 1965.
Gulda's chops are very much in evidence throughout the sessions. In spite of the fact that he had not previously worked with bassist Bob Cranshaw, the two hit it off immediately, while drummer Albert "Tootie" Heath had recently completed a tour with the pianist. His very deliberate approach to a standard like "I'll Remember April" is rather refreshing, while he's also up to the challenge of jazz works such as J.J. Johnson's "Lament" (played as a solo) and Jimmy Heath's waltz-time "Ineffable." Gulda's jaunty hard bop vehicle "The Horn and I" and his Art Tatum-like "Quartet" are among his more memorable compositions.
Briefly available in the mid-'60s, this excellent album will not be easy to locate.

I've never met, heard nor heard of a pianist so equally well versed in jazz and "classical" music.

Terrific album! Love his subdued intensity. Reminds me of Bill Evans. Wish they would have met...

I've been looking all over for this important record having lost my LP in the fire. I cannot thank you enough,...... Gulda is my musical hero and I had good fortune to meet him and play with him. I also worked with both Bob Cranshaw and Tootie Heath.

BEAUTIFUL...A REAL MASTER OF MUSIC...! My favorite pianist in the jazz genre, always open for experiments and new influences...same time the most correct interpreter of classic music...and he liked to play with young talents and other jazz greats as well ! :)

Thanks for this. Great album. I've been watching videos on Gulda. I have a lot of respect for the man. Given his classical training, he has the chops. But, to straddle both jazz and classical music convincingly, that's a real achievement. A musician who followed his heart and gave it his all.

Thanks for this wonderful album, which by the way is still available, on Spotify. Both, Gulda and Gould played in their own league. True masters!
