Ivan Sosa of the Ineos Grenadiers attacked on the brutal ascent of Mont Ventoux on stage 3 of the 2021 Tour de La Provence, racing to take the stage win ahead of teammate Egan Bernal and rival Julian Alaphilippe, and taking the overall race lead in the process.

This was an interesting stage and these highlights are better than normal. Publishing 5 days after the event doesn't really help though especially when Lanterne Rouge smashes out highlights with suberb analysis on day 1.

Pour information, "Ventoux" c'est du Franco-Provençal, et oui ce n'est pas une surprise, on parle franco-provençal en Provence ! L'Occitanie est une fable moderne des autonomistes toulousains. Il y a bien une région historique le Languedoc. Pour ce qui est de la langue, il y a un concept linguistique de la langue d'Oc, et ce n'est pas à proprement parlé une langue, mais une zone dans laquelle les dialectes se comprennent et se ressemblent.

Why do these commentators insist on using the term "He doesn't have to do any work" on these mountain stages. I realize Bernal was marking the rider and couldn't attack, Sosa was up the road. This was an uphill drag to the finish, of course he was working. "He's not expected to pull." Might be more accurate? The watts and the speed that's being generated...trust me it's work.

cuz who is in the lead does all the work and if you are always behind means you are just being dragged along. Obviously it is still very tiring to do so and keep up, but still much easier (can be 30-40% easier) than lead. Not expected to pull means he is ahead of the guy who pulls him on the GC(General contenders) so he does not need to attack as long as he can keep up with him is all good.

@@Vismajor01 in hard climbs YOU ARE ALONE AGAINST GRAVITY, there´s no "sitting in the wheel" of anyone, 30 to 40 per cent easier? , you have to be kidding, not even one per cent under 25 kms/ hr, otherwise everybody would just suck wheel and get to the top with the best climbers

Très beau et très surprenante cette montée du Mont Ventoux avec ce pourcentage affiché à chaque prochain kilomètre ;, en tant que cyclotouriste chevronné, je l'ai gravi en 2006 à l'issue d'un " Mer-Montagne" : j'ai monté en mai à partir de Malaucène, il y avait de la neige proche du sommet quant au départ de Bédouin il n'était pas autorisé pour la quantité d'enneigement ...

At the speeds they are going I guess there is some aerodynamic advantage. Not a big one though but still.

Over 8mph there is an aero advantage to drafting on the hills. Under 8mph, its negligible, so its more about the psychology, in the minds of both riders - positive for the chaser (he can’t drop me), negative and distracting for the front man (I can’t shake him off/why won’t he work with me).

Bernal is not going to help Alaphilippe to chase down his teammate even for his own sake. I'm pretty sure Sosa had check with Bernal first before he went on the attack, probably telling him he's got a lot left to break and create a huge lead. As for Bernal, he broke off with the group late when Sosa was out of reach and secured second.
