Inevitable MKIII Review: Iron Armour goes plastic (again!)

MKIII Iron Armour is an Astartes design icon, a suit whose visually brutality is match only by that of it's wearer. And now it has been re-imagined as a new plastic miniature kit for the ever-growing Age of Darkness model range from Games Workshop.
Please join me for this multi-modal review where I take a look at the Space Marine Battle Group boxed set, ponder how to pronounce "Deredeo" and consider the value of this latest Horus Heresy offering (yep, it's Leak-o-nomics time again!)
Of course, I build a couple of the new MKIIIs, do size comparisons to their MKVI cousins and share my thoughts on this new infantry squad. Artistic origins are not forgotten either with the art and models that influenced this latest version of Space Marine powered armour.

The new Mark III torsos have the same arm-mounting nubs as the new Mark VIs, they're just also the mounting point for the gates that connect the torso pieces to the sprue, so you may have cut them off without realizing it while snipping the torsos out.
@leakycheese
@leakycheese 9 месяцев назад
A good observation - and you are correct! Thanks for pointing this out, the sprue does attached directly onto the shoulder nub and there is a risk (as I demonstrated) to cut it off in error.
@caboosealmighty3735

Don't know about the mk3s, but the mk6 also have the sprue attaching to one of the leg nubs. Meaning that it can be cut off, but can also be deformed easily. Apart from the backpack and the proportions, I like the older kit better. Mainly due to more poses and easy mixing of bits from other kits.

Just started to build mine and what "shocked" me the most was how elegant they are. I wanted to paint them as Iron Warriors but looking at them they would also make fine Emperors Children.

I prefer the older (resin and plastic) MK III model. The helmets are chonkier and the poses look more aggressive. Glad I bought two boxes of Betrayal at Calth back in the day. The new plastic vehicles look great though.

What you said about the mould lines is absolutely bang on with the MkIIIs. I don't think I have come across a kit (Warhammer, aircraft tanks or otherwise) that has so little clean up. Well done GW

Some very interesting curves & details in the new kit. I like the bulge in the upper chest, the way the thigh plates curve inward on the edges & the way the shin plate kick out over the top of the foot. I can see them taking contrast/slapchop style painting really well. Also I'm a big fan of the revised knee & elbow joints, they seem more functional & less "plates stuck on with no clear method of attachment" than the old resin or plastic MK III marines. I understand the friction over the helmets but for me the spike is an interesting detail (plus I personally prefer a more brutal look even on goodie armies). I hadn't really been thinking about adding MK III to my Alphas but the more I look at the kit the more interesting it looks to paint & decal.

Speaking of the helmets, I would imagine the spikes would be very easy to snip away, with just a couple of passes with a file to smooth out the cut, if you absolutely wanted your Mk III Marines unpointy.

I’ll be interested to see how they do the MKII and MKIV kits for the heavy weapons. Since the MKII and MKIV forearms are so different from the MKVI, I would guess that instead of the vambraces section, they would make full arms for the heavy weapons? I do think they could have saved themselves this sort of trouble/conundrum by making the FW heavy weapons with backpacks and cabling into the plastic HW kit. That way you don’t have to make vambraces and arms for the different MKs. The arm poses are always the same on the tac squad, so the cabling could have been made similar to the Tempestus Scions kit. Also I just prefer the FW heavy weapons look. The backpacks and being underslung just look kooler to me. I’ll also be interest to see how they do breachers if they do them.

An unrelated side note, to anyone that still has original MK3 back packs to assemble...use sprue goo at the top of the pack. It fills the gap while securing the 2 halves. And reshaping the squish-out is easy when the goo begins to firm up. 👍

My only gripe with the Mk3. Legion box kit was building the deredeo dreadnought. I cannot express how frustrating it was. It took me nearly 4 hours by itself. It has a million micro-bits that are near impossible to hold and clean from mold lines. The weapons given the way they attack have just about no pose-ability. This compared to the Proteus land raider that I had built in about 35 minutes. Everything else about this big box was amazing.

Such a lovely box this. I've been enjoying putting the MkIII's together. A couple of interesting things: 1. The new models blend in very well with the older MkIII, depending on the pose. The legs apart pose that's closer to the older one means they are at pretty much an identical height and using the old helmets you are hard pressed to spot the difference unless you're looking up close. 2. Compatibility with the existing upgrade kits is really clever with the pose compatibility tables being the same as for Mark VI and the little arm plates that come with this to cover the upgrade arms is a stroke of genius honestly 3. Wish we got a full special weapons sprue. I'd like to do a full tac support squad. As it is I'm probably going to just do a 5 man rotor cannon squad and then order a heavy weapon upgrade set 4. In my existing army that's made up of mostly the old Mark 3, I've enjoyed using these new ones as the basis for characters. So far I've built a herald, champion and master of signals using just this box and some spare bitz

I don’t remember off hand, but if the names Eddy and Deredeo came out at the same time, the nickname “Eddy” could have been GW’s sly way of telling people how to pronounce “Deredeo”. So it’s maybe not “dare-uh-day-oh”, but “Dur-Eddy-oh”. However, if the Deredeo wasn’t mentioned until afterwards, then my whole theory goes right out the window. I don’t know that it’s true, as it’s just an idea. 🤷🏻‍♂️

great kit and I understand what you are saying about them being a call back to certain artworks but they are a big enough departure from what has been the mkiii that they aren't the same. They don't feel as heavy as the old models, especially with how soft and round all of the armor panels are. Also you say it's not a retcon, but with these being the new armor and featured in all the new artwork is exactly a retcon. Now they could have said these are a different pattern of mkiii or a modification, but they didn't. If these are mkiii, then what pattern of armor as the Plague Marines wearing?
@leakycheese
@leakycheese 7 месяцев назад
I imagine it all as MKIII, just built to slightly different specs. If you want a real world example of this thought experiment, look at the huge variety of military rifles built on either the Armalite or AK platform. The galaxy of the Imperium is mind-boggling large.... deviations from standards not only makes sense in such a setting but it would be less convincing if everything is always identical. Final thought: one piece of artwork I didn't mention in this video is "The Emperor of Mankind" by Kevin Chin (2012). You should take a look at the Astartes in the lower left of the painting, these are perhaps the clearest vision of what the new MKIII Tactical Squad is based on. Also, remember Forge World designed the MKIII from Burning of Prospero set. It was their interpretation of previous art and models from Games Workshop, and wasn't particularly faithful to that material either. Know your design history - avoid holding up original paradigms that are anything but.

After assembling one, I think there's only one thing about the kit that bugs me (aside from the wish that they'd done a different sergeant sprue with more MkIII-esque weapons and pouches) -- either the socket in the torso is too deep or the neck is too short of the chin is too long, but I find when I put the head in, the chin catches on the gorget and the pose ends up looking slightly upwards, which bugs me. Fortunately this is the easiest of easy fixes.

Agreed.... I was working on a couple more and noticed the same thing. My fix thus far has been to leave a bit of the sprue attachment on the neck to slightly raise the head.

Hi Leaky love it that you are back with new content. Was the MK VI Armour lore change a retcon in your eyes?
@leakycheese
@leakycheese 9 месяцев назад
No lore was changed around MKVI armour, not sure what you are referring to here? I've seen this remark made a number of times and it is erroneous. So much so that I prepared a summary of the MKVI armour history as noted in the Black Library novels and Forge World Black Books. 1. The Iron Warriors and Salamanders both received limited numbers of prototype MKVI armour to trial in the late Great Crusade (HHB3: Extermination). 2. The Raven Guard trialed 1000 pre- production suits before the heresy began (HHB3: Extermination). 3. MKVI entered full scale production in the months before the heresy began i.e. Battle of Isstvan Ill (HHB3: Extermination). 4. The Alpha Legion were deploying MKVI in significant numbers before the heresy began. John Grammaticus observed Captain Ingo Pech of the Alpha Legion wearing MKVI armour during their encounter in Mon Lo Harbour, an event that occurred before the Battle of Isstvan III (HHB3: Extermination, Legion by Dan Abnett). 5. Canon artwork shows that other legions had MKVI prior to the outbreak of the heresy e.g. Space Wolves and Thousand Sons (A Thousand Sons, Prospero Burns). 6. Canon artwork shows the Death Guard, Emperor's Children and Iron Hands had all deployed MKVI at the time of the Isstvan Campaign (Black Library Horus Heresy novel cover Fulgrim). Supplemental: Leetu, the prototype Astartes who dates from the late Unification Wars, wears a unique pattern of powered armour. His armour (the LE2 model from 1985) has many features of MKVI Corvus armour including the distinctive lean-snouted helm. Any connection between this armour and the much later MKVI has not yet been explained (The End and the Death: Volume 1 by Dan Abnett). Conclusion: Astartes MKVI Corvus Pattern Armour was being deployed across the legions immediately before the events pertaining to the Horus Heresy. MKVI is full Space Marine battleplate (it is not light-weight armour for recon use only) with an enhanced sensor suite located in it's distinctive snout (see Deathwatch expansion for Dark Heresy RPG). From start of the heresy, the MKVI became an ever larger part of the marine legions armoury, along with MKV as MKIl, MKIll and MKIV suits were lost in the war. Hope you found that helpful 🙂

Then immediately take Tamiya Extra Thin and brush on to smooth off the join. 4. Leave to throughly dry (overnight is good). 5. Carefully trim down any remaining seam or gap along the join with a sharp knife. 6. Reapply a fine layer of Tamiya Extra Thin over the trimmed area to smooth off any remaining burrs. 7. Sit back and enjoy the seamless pauldrons. Be careful not to touch the areas where glue has been applied while it drys! Hope this helps 🙂

A lot of people have complained, but apart from the helmets, the style changes are so minor that they're barely worth mentioning (and it's not like they're unprecedented in the history of MKIII design). The only thing I'd prefer is more reinforced-looking faceplates a la the previous kit, since the new ones look more like a cosmetic tweak to the MKII head than an up-armouring. 8:31 Do you think full plastic MKV will be likely, without a partial redesign? It's trivial to cast all of those studs and extra cables in resin, but getting them all to cast cleanly in plastic could lead to some annoying assembly quirks, like the oft-hated two-part pauldrons (since GW seem to have abandoned the idea of using side-moulding after the Baneblade kit).
@leakycheese
@leakycheese 9 месяцев назад
That's a fair criticism on the face plates.... while we don't have a full MKII yet, the tank commander head from the vehicles does allow for comparison. I just compared the two now, and while the brow on the MKIII is more prominent, the face plate is of similar depth to the MKII. The MKV is going to be a tricky one to do in plastic. If the designers want to achieve symmetrical hemispherical studs like on the MKVI pauldrons then that will be an absurdly complex kit which I don't think GW will do (each leg will likely have 3 or 4 sections). That then leaves the other option of stud underfills like we saw on the plastic MKIVs from the Calth box... not as good looking for sure. I wonder how people would react if GW went with the complex option?

@@leakycheese Yeah, three-part legs would be a pain. I'd probably just do a slight redesign of the greaves, put the studs on only the front facing (a trick they've used on things like new Praetors and Khorne Berzerkers), and maybe do cables or MKVI-like details on the backs. If they only have to worry about cleanly casting fiddly details on 180 degrees of the surface instead of 360, it's not quite as hard. Same reason why I suspect MKIII's had two plastic kits in the time it's taken for MKII to get none beyond a single crewman (in the most MKII-friendly pose possible), although I can see how Mk II would be doable with the new MkIII/VI poses. Just eexpect almost every leg to be split at the knee on those. The new MKVIs make me think GW isn't willing to compromise on quality with the backfilled studs anymore. I'm fine with it, even with the two-part pauldrons, although I think the optimal solution is just to reconsider the idea of plastic-resin hybrid kits for awkward parts like that (using good-quality resin, of course).

I just don’t understand they phased out MK2 armor …..
@leakycheese
@leakycheese 6 месяцев назад
MKII Armour wasn't "phased out" so much as they took the resin models out of production (like most of the early heresy and Badab kits). If you look at the art in the new rulebooks MKII is still there, and the new plastic tank commander is also in MKII. My prediction is we will get a new plastic MKII kit over the course of the next 2 years.

@leakycheese

Right you are, thanks for pointing this out, my recollection wasn't accurate on the Vexilia. I think my perception was clouded by buying the resin command sets to get the nuncio-vox for my Word Bearer plastic MKIVs and that set including the vexilia as well.

i really wished they just resized the old mk3 kit, because to me, this just looks like off-brand space marines trying to avoid a copyright issue. Making the bolters smaller is such a dumb decision, and the helmets oh lord the helmets, the old ones looked very gothic and knight like which i really liked, but these 100% resemble a 3d print off-brand marine. Another issue is making almost all the edges soft and aerodynamic which does not fit in the slightest with the mk3 design (thats what mk6 was for). Generally i consider these just a giant downgrade except for the fact that these look anatomically correct opposed to the dwarf like look of the old kit.\

The mk3. kit really demonstrated to me how there are people who live to complain. The armor as you said is not only gorgeously sculpted but faithful to about a decade of established artwork. The retcon stance is bizarre.

The 45.5% discount from 3rd party retailers would be more or less the same (33%) discount because it only makes sense to compare the boxset at £100 against the kits with the same (15-20%) discount applied.

it's a comparison of the discount to the RRP, so it makes sense to alculate the discount to the RRP, instead of a discounted box

I think the new MK III Marines are great. The only one letdown is, in my opinion, that they almost have the same 5 poses that the new MK VI Marines have. They had to do this of course, so that all of the weapon upgrade sprues can be used by both Marks of Armour. And it is safe to assume that this will be the case if we might also get new Mark IV sprues - to basically complete the most important Heresy Marks of power armour. Also i would wave wished for a new MK III specific basic upgrade sprue, but i guess it is ok that they made thic compatible to alle Marks as well...

As some one who has been playing for BW days FW prices from Australia, for us or Plastic dont feel "cheaper"... fw prices are so insane but so are the plastic for us.
@KaeEbonrai
@KaeEbonrai 9 месяцев назад
I disagree, the plastic is cheaper, it's still expensive, but definitely cheaper than FW
@leakycheese
@leakycheese 9 месяцев назад
Plastic prices in Australia on MKIII Tacticals are 33% of the resin equivalents (new MKIII Tactical Squad is AUD$125, 20 Forge World Iron Hands Tactical Marines are AUD$380). If you can get the plastics at a discounting indy store then the difference will be greater. For reference, a 1-1 exchange on the UK retail price of the plastic squad is just under AUD$86 so yeah, there is the derisking effect of international pricing which isn’t great.

You say that "lazy design" is lazy criticism. I disagree. I must first preface by saying that I do prefer the old mono-pose figures above the highly dynamic and "detail" riddled newer figures and my interest primarily lies in fantasy/historics and the sci-fi figures I like are a different aesthetic from most of WH40k/WH30k. The issue you must look at is the price point and marketing. WH40k has been primarily marketed as a premium hobby and the prices reflect that. From this WH30k is even more of a premium product, and once again the price reflects that. In this respect calling the reuse of sprues and the limit in possability "lazy design" can be a valid criticism. Not because there is an issue with the design itself. The reuse of sprues that contain weapons can even be seen as intelligent design and should be encouraged in most situations, but it is inappropriate for the price GW demands and the way they market it. A better way of what I am trying to say is: "lazy design" are the wrong words but "unsuitable design for the price asked" is valid and what I believe most people calling it lazy actually mean.
@leakycheese
@leakycheese 9 месяцев назад
And yet the new marine kits are being sold at a notably lower price point to their heresy predecessors and quite a bit below current WH40K models - so not following your thinking at all here? When I thought it though it's actually an inversion of reality? And people need to be accurate with what they say - in online text-based communication that's the only way meaning is conveyed. If people actually just said "I don't like that there are only 5 stock body poses available, I wanted them all to be different regardless of the consequences for the totality of the model range meeting the features of the army list" then I'd say "fine". But that's the thing, calling the design here lazy is approaching oxymoronic. And as you've shown with your lengthy explanation, a "lazy" way to level a complaint.
