Thanks for your time mate. I very much appreciate you going over the different ammo types you used and the results for both weapons. I'll be keeping this vid so I can take notes on what to try with my 22 lr weapon's.
Excellent video, Rob. My 62f is a great shooting rifle. I changed the tiny factory bolt handle to an extended bolt handle, and also changed the tiny mag release button to an extended magazine release. That adds another $45 or so to the cost of the rifle, but makes it MUCH more pleasant to shoot. I usually use Federal Automatch and get good, consistent results. Pleasantly surprised that the 62f appeared to be at least as accurate as the Ruger 10/22. Keep up the good work!
Used to own a savage but not the ruger so i knew the savage if dialed in would be a good shooter. Thanks for the video Rob as always very helpful an interesting.
Great video. I purchased my savage 64 , 8 years ago at local Big 5. Then it was $179. Plus tax. Anyway, at first range shooting I had problems. The magazine that came with it and a second one I purchased were faulty. At first I thought I bought un-usable rifle. After first shot, it was failure to eject. Then F.T.Fire happened. After a few finally cycled, the base plate on the magazine mysteriously came completely off magazine and remaining ammunition dropped out of magazine. Yea, it was a bad day for me at the range with my new savage 64. Fortunately I had my second firearm ( Walther P22) to finish at least some target shooting. After getting home I did some research on the savage 64 and found a few others who had maybe got same batch of magazines with similar failures. So I followed some modifications tips , filing off sharp edges, sanding loading area of surfaces on magazines with a round file and fine grit mini flat files. And I semi permanently hot glued base plate onto one of the magazines. And it WORKED!! Absolutely, it was possibly the loading ramp on each that didn't get attention before being sold to public. Now it'll shoot every .22 LR ammo I've tried in it.
I have the exact same set up.( 62F and 3x9x32 Baraska scope ). Got them at Walmart last summer, paid $114.00 for the Savage and about $32.00 for the scope (plus tax).Reliable and accurate rifle. All steel receiver and barrel is a plus.
It is hard to beat this gun for the money. I put a m carbo spring kit in mine and it did help the trigger quite a bit. It's still not great but it helps. And that is the one downfall of this rifle as it doesn't have the greatest trigger in the world. But it can be improved upon a little
I really like this video! I don't do videos but thought about it many times to demonstrate that out of all my 22s, my Browning BLR is the least accurate and it's my most expensive. My ruger 10/22 is slightly more accurate than the Browning but my savage rifles are the most accurate. My mark II is the best followed by my model 29A, which was my grandfather's.
I bought a Rossi RS22 ($99.99) for when I take my grandsons out, they love it, it's a tack driver and I'm not just saying that. I love seeing their faces when they see their hits and take their targets home and hang on their bedroom wall!
I have the Mark ii f with the accutrigger and it is very accurate. Stackin em outa the box accurate. I think it wears a Barska as well. And yeah, I had to work on the barrel of my 3x the cost Ruger American Rimfire 22 when I first got it. Ruger said my accuracy was within their tolerance and denied my return for service, so I reworked the crown myself. If you throw a Marlin 795 into the mix that would make it interesting.
Great video, thank you. I have both of these rifles too.I love my Ruger 10/22 as it is in my view, a gun cabinet staple but that being said my little Savage is a bang on accurate rifle that hits more on target than my Ruger. I have a simple trimag setup for the 30 round availability and my Savage just has two pairs of the 10 rounder taped together. It’s not the prettiest thing but it works for me. Do you find the receiver on the Savage kind of a punky thin metal with easy to strip hardware? My only complaint of it.
Accuracy tip, Press and hold the trigger rather than stab and release. Make resetting the trigger part of the next shot. I like the accuracy of the Savage but abso-bloom'n-lootly HATE the magazine change requiring two hands. The Savage trigger is better from the factory and there are inexpensive aftermarket (MCARBO) spring kits to make even better. While the 10-22 is the gold standard in cheap & easy 22LR. They are no longer cheap. I'd give the Ruger the nod only because there are so many accessories available. Shamefully a new BX trigger is just about required to make it acceptable. Another nod to the savage is the dovetail receiver. Optics on a ruger are almost always too High and hard to get the scope far enough away for proper eye relief in prone position. Nod goes to the ruger for easy one hand drop free mag.
I own both and agree, put decent glass on the savage, $100 scope on $100 rifle and amazing results. It's more accurate than both of my ruger 10/22's . I believe it's more accurate because the barrel lenght and the fact that's it's free floating, 21.5 in free float , vs 16in non free floating. Not surprising the savage is more accurate.
Savage has a longer barrel so it gets my vote plus I’ve had one for years and I shoot some pretty tight groups with it actually just got a 10/22 walnut stock stainless barrel jobby looks cool have no idea how it shoots yet
These were shot at what distance? I’m really not surprised that the 64F performed so well. Great value for a fun plinking/ hunting rifle. Thanks for the video 👍🏼
@@HamiltonOutdoors Amazing! Without significant wind that still puts most of the groups well under 2” @“50 yards, which I believe is Ruger’s acceptable standard for the 10/22. Good shooting, BTW👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Really surprised that the Auto Match had the half inch group & surprised the Federal Red Box was that wide of a group. Wouldn't it be nice to have a Savage 99 vs Ruger 96 match. Good shooting Rob. Keep your powder dry the next few days.
@@HamiltonOutdoors Looks like you've already got you money's worth out of that shooting rest. Haven't gotten a chance to use my yet but may have to add a little more filler to it for heavier rifles. Great for the price. Appreciate the tip.
To quote 0l Sootch 00 : “ THIS SAVAGE REALLY IS A SAVAGE!” But for thrice the price a feller could have himself a Ruger with a tad bit more acreage as far as Mag capacity goes… not to mention : a truly beautiful stock .
Ruger isn’t charging you more for fun. The 10/22 is bombproof. My oldest 10/22 is 34yrs old. Doubt the savage will still be a gun in 34 years. Usually you get what you pay for.
idk, I would think the ruger with that nice scope! But Im going to go with the savage and the little barska scope! I bet the winchester super x did pretty good groups and the cci std. :D *resumes watching* lol
The Ruger 10-22 has the advantage when it comes to simpler disassembly and cleaning. I have a 10-22 but my favorite 22 LR rifle is the Savage Mark 2 bolt action rifle. Very easy to remove the bolt and clean the rifle thoroughly, then put it back. No tools required and there are no parts to lose. Thanks for the video.
Yeah, the Savage 64,62. Got one. Never have managed to get a full mag through the damn thing. So, either you get a good one, or one that will never work. Which is the one I got, maybe…1 out of three is a lemon. Sort of like gambling at a low stakes poker game.
This is a second of these I have owned and both of them have worked great never had an issue. Maybe you should send it back to Savage and let them fix it
Those 40 grain CCI standard velocities are what I call “poor man’s” match ammo. It’s all I have ever used. I tried Ely match and 10x in my Marlin bolt and (highly modified) ruger 10/22 and never saw any real difference.
You did not give the Ruger a fair chance sighted in on a windy day. And that goofy looking scope mount was no help get a normal base and rings and do it over. However I notice you may be a Coalminer appreciate that buddy. I was also here inWV up on Cabin Creek in Kanawha County.
Have you ever shoot the Winchester Wildcat 22 LR ? I can tell, its fun to shoot ! Besides, its also a budget gun too .... To my experience, I can say .... the Winchester Wildcat shoots as good as the Ruger 10/22 LR ....
Yes I have shot Winchester wildcats through both. And the wildcats seem to be one of the more accurate rounds through both of the guns. The wildcat ammunition is pretty good stuff.
i dont whant to be a Savage lover but Savage is a higher quality in grouping and sell in a better price and its made in my country so im all Savage to mush high price on a 10/22 ruger for less accuracy lol and savage64F make mag with 20 shoot now
I got one of the old ones with metal trigger guard bought new.Its alright not the best ,just have it for my collection.Still have the box and manual, papers that came with it .
The 10/22 mags suck just sold it very unreliable very unconventional very picky on what ammo it will take.can’t even leave it loaded or it won’t feed very disappointed getting the savage
I've owned a lot of 1022s throughout my life and I have never had a problem with their magazine. I guess it's possible to get a bad magazine. But I've never had one. Savages are great rifles as well. Maybe even more accurate
@@HamiltonOutdoors 4 of them I’d be crazy to go buy more of them that’s why I sold it the rifle work good at first and then I came home loaded it up and left it for about two or three weeks. Then all the mags failed.
@@HamiltonOutdoors yeah those BX 10 wouldn’t even feed Winchesters at all either the rounds wouldn’t pop up enough to feed or even sometimes they would get rim locked which was crazy but the CCI wouldn’t feed either
@@zacharyherrington8829 definitely sounds to me like you got some bad magazines. I've never had any issue with the Ruger magazines. And I've owned a few rugers in my life. You know all companies put out some crap once in awhile
I have never owned a 10/22, I just do not like the rotary magazine. I really like Savage 22s. I can't warm up to their newer rotary mag rifles, though. Maybe I am unrealistic about it but is a personal preference. I still like my Marlin Model 60 as well.
That's the great thing about different manufacturers none of us like all the same features on all guns. It's good to have variety. Nothing wrong with liking your standard magazine that have been proven to work for decades. Thanks for watching
I’m just curious but what do you not like about the rotary mags? I’m just curious because I have shot lots of both and never even thought about it until now, lol. I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure Savage invented the rotary magazine.
The magazines, while heavy and bulky, seem to work fine. I got a left handed 64f recently, and prefer it to my 10/22 and model 60. Mostly due to ease of operation for me, no fumbling for the safety or bolt.
I've owned a bunch of rugers in my day and I've never really had much issue with them feeding. All 22 semi-automatic rifles have the tendency to have problems with certain ammunitions. 22 is a very dirty unreliable ammo
