We'll see how this pans out, although I suspect those North Korean troops will suffer heavy casualties. Or at least those who don't desert will... This is the first time these guys have seen another country outside North Korea, and the temptation to do a runner and desert will be strong....

If Russia has a free hand to use North Korean troops and artillery shells, Iranian missiles and drones etc, Chinese FPV drones and golf caddies I see no reason why Ukraine can't use long range western weapons and European/US troops to defend their country. Ukraine and the EU is not the aggressor here, it is merely for defense.

Russia, who (unprovoked) attacked a sovereign country, made the first escalation in Feb 2022. For the whole of 2022 it was on the back foot. The West should have crushed Russia then. Instead it hummed and harred, dithered and spewed hypocritical rhetoric about standing with Ukraine "for as long as it takes" but in fact did very little. When Russia was on the back foot, they gave Russia plenty of time to find new allies, new weaponry, and beef up their military. America has allowed Ukraine to keep its head above water but it refuses - REFUSES - to allow Ukraine to win. If it really wanted Ukraine to win (and with Ukraine all European democratic countries) it would have put Ukraine in position to win in 2022, which it could have done easily. Now they complain about war-fatigue, growing costs and "we can't get rid of Putin" (fear). This alarming stupidity is costing Ukraine hundreds of thousands of lives, families ruined, infrastructure destroyed, and they (USA) are still refusing to allow Ukraine to strike military targets inside Russia. We, slaves to the cretinous USA, have become accomplices to the horrific slaughter in Ukraine. Saying I'm ashamed is a euphemism.

N Korea has a good opinion of the Russia because it was Soviet Union that give them food, technology and weapons to not lose the war. Today is the payback time and on the plus side they are receiving from Russia the things they need: food, oil and technology. Anyway N Korea is under sanctions , there is nothing to lose. Kim knows that his army is without experience and I think the troops will be rotated to gain experience in an actual war. Losses are not a thing that Kim will look at.

This is like some alternate reality, North Koreans involved in a European war.

Ukraine should have not attacked Crimea and Donbass, and ignored the Minsk 2 agreement. Now they have lost most of Ukraine with 7 million casualties.

They don’t need combat experience to do meatwave attacks. If I was living in Poland and the Baltic states I would be very, very worried about this escalation. Britton, Frans and Germany would have to start worrying about supporting war in those countries. Let's face ot, meatwaves work very effectively when there are huge numbers of infantrymen.

So, how will 10k Nk soldiers win in an unfamiliar terrain? How much difference will they make? Are they even better than russian soldiers? Or are they just going to fertilize the ukrainian soil?

Those NK soldiers picked will have to have loved ones and family in NK, otherwise they will have no obligation to fight. Funny how Putin can use State foreign fighters on his side but ……..? Just like the British did in world war 1 With Indian , African and west indies troops who were often not even given firearms ,these poor souls are being lined up as bullet catchers, soaking up ammunition and ordanance. the troops sent from north Korea into russian held territory for training are hailed as elite trained special forces, it remains to be seen how this plays out.

What did he expect? All their trained to do is march in a line. They dont fight. They dont even shoot a bullet.

NATO should drop leaflets to the North Korean soldiers, promising them amnesty and asylum if they desert and offering money to officers who bring secret information to them. Then they should publicly announce that many are responding. Kim would Stop sending them I think

With the current state of NO being what it is, you can argue that giving them food and fuel stabilizes them while disarming them. Even giving them some 'better' technology doesn't necessarily help them, as it may be more costly than it's worth.

This cohort of soldiers will help make Ukraine's land more fertile, leading to increased agricultural productivity. This will enable Ukraine to supply agricultural products to North Korea.

At first I thought some of the North Korean soldiers in the parade were quite old, before I realised that they weren't necessarily old, they were SKINNY. They looked really underfed compared to professional soldiers from other countries. I still remember reading a story about a North Korean defector who received a medical check up after crossing the border and the South Korean doctors discovered intestinal parasites because of eating food which had been grown using human feces as fertiliser. I feel very sorry for the North Korean civilian population for what they are suffering under the communist dictatorship but I have less pity for non-conscript soldiers of the DPRK because they are part of the problem.

Russia still has all the problems of logistics, diminishing supplies, petrol and infrastructure-- so now there's more bodies, but NK doesn't have basic things like food, water or petrol and 1950s hardware might not be as good as cope cages.

The North Korean troop movements in Eastern Russia are only superficially about Ukraine. They represent a Russian-North Korean alliance against China. As Russia grows weaker China is more tempted to conquer Siberia.

These rookie NK troops will be despatched in short order.They may be very good at synchronised marching but that means nothing on the front line.

It's hardly an apples-to-apples comparison here, but it's not like a lot of Western Europeans and Americans aren't already fighting in Ukraine. Military men "resigning" and then going to a foreign conflict zone to "volunteer" is pretty standard practice when one country wants to get a first-hand look at a conflict for lessons learned and/or impact the outcome of a conflict they aren't directly involved in.
