Those "blue" notes are the way I remember gospel music to be. Bending notes in the pentatonic scale. That sound WAS the gospel song, it came out of slavery......its electric to the pulses of the soul. When I hear it, it gives me cold chills.
I just heard Inez Andrews for the first time tonight, and I gather she passed away a few months ago. Seems like it should have been on the front page of every newspaper in the country! My exposure to gospel music has been limited (I'm white), but I thought I knew a little about it. Thanks to videos like this one I'm learning just how little I knew. I am young, and I love traditional gospel music over anything. But I love to hear any music of any age that directly correlates with what my bible reads. Recently I have been blessed to attend a school where I am not the only one. ☺
She's young in this footage, but her voice had an "old annointed sound." Tina Turner must had heard them when she was younger because both of them have that deep, rich, raspy sound.
I just love the old gospel songs/artists. They are so original. No extras, no theatre. Just singing and ministering the lyrics of the song. A very very simple song, yet sang with so much impact.

I met Inez Andrews years ago through her 2 twin God daughters from Gary, IN. Inez told me this story behind "Oh Mary Don't You Weep" She was working in the kitchen of a Caucasian family, cutting onions up, she said tears was coming down her eyes from the strong onions and that's when she began writing that song. I believe her.
