Common infections, such as strep, influenza, upper respiratory infections and mono, can trigger neurologic (i.e., tics) and psychiatric symptoms in children and adolescents. Patients are often misdiagnosed with a psychiatric illness when, in fact, they have a treatable autoimmune disorder.
PANS (pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome) and PANDAS (pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorder associated with strep infections). PANS and PANDAS are a type of autoimmune basal ganglia encephalitis.

So many children on the autism spectrum were inappropriately diagnosed years ago .So often these poor children’s sudden change or regression was attributed to “autism”Even once higher functioning children with ASD had a baseline of development that suddenly changed .So many of these children, now adults could have been treated .Sadly,so many slipped through the cracks and were treated like psychiatric patients most of their lives😞 #LivesLost
