It feels like as soon as it began, the Third Doctor's first season comes to an end, with one of Doctor Who's very best stories.
But could it be THE best?

Inferno is just such a solid piece, script, acting, direction, thematically even. Apart from the Primords' appearance, possibly, there's nothing here that you'd be scared to show to a Not-We.

When I started rewatching 3rd Doctor era it quickly became one of my favourite of the classic era. This story as well is a masterpiece, seeing how the Brig & Benton get really screen time and material to show their acting skills was *chefs kiss* As for him being a "tory" doctor, I feel he knew how to "work the system" since he was exiled. This becomes obvious in the next story I think where he is able to name drop, in order to get what he wants.

Never thought about it before, but surely Hartnell was the Tory Doctor? I believe wanting to beat a caveman's skull in with a rock was in the last manifesto.

Funnily enough someone did do a ranking video of the Doctors from most to least Tory. From what I remember Pertwee ended up being less Tory. If anyone's interested type Doctor Who Tory in RU-vid the video should come up. Great Review of one my favourite stories.

I can’t see the 3rd Doctor as a Tory. In a genius move (imo), he was characterised as an anti-establishment figure who happened to be part of the establishment. I love his put-downs when going head-to-head with authority figures like Professor Stahlman (“…you, sir, are a nitwit!”).

This is my favorite story from this season of Doctor Who. I felt like the 3rd Doctor's era started out quite slow, but this was the story that I feel like really started his era properly! The ending is brilliant and dark, and the premise of the whole episode was interesting. The side characters are some of the BEST of the entire run of Doctor Who in my opinion. I just love this story so much, it is brilliant!

Good observations about the primords not having free will and how that fits in with the overall themes, I hadn't really considered that before, especially because the primords are often just considered an unnecessary monster of the week

Pertwee also had a fear of heights so was weary about walking or running around so high upp

This really makes me want to rewatch Inferno. I loved the whole of season 7 - and I thought it was a shame Liz got the boot so soon, without so much as a goodbye!

Stahlman has the "mirror universe" Goatee, like Spock in TOS Trek 🙃

Inferno is absolutely brilliant. One of Pertwees best, and one of the few stories in classic that really makes you care about all the side characters. I would say the best so far, I'd probably give that to Enemy of the World, but still very, very good.

I have been a Dr Who fan from the beginning. The Pertwee era is my favourite because I am a big UNIT fan and think they are the best addition since the Daleks to Dr Who.

The 3rd Doctor isn't a Tory, he's probably more that way inclined than a lot of others but I think that's only really because he has a respect for authority, which is typically a view of conservatism as an ideology. But when you actually look a bit closer at it he only ever holds up the authority of those who have earned it through mutual respect and the like, primarily the Brigadier. Plus in a lot of his episodes he's advocating for a lot of typically left wing beliefs. He's a lefty at heart, but loves a man in uniform.

Which makes considering the 2nd Doctor basically got executed by his own government.

I don’t think he’s that way inclined at all. Beyond mentioning being a member of a club or something, he doesn’t ever display ANY type of conservative values or ideals. He’s aggressively progressive in almost all forms. I think people just make that assumption based on the way he talks and dresses. The doctor will always be a folk hero, someone who rallies against the oppressors, fights for the oppressed, and always battle against the status quo. Three is pretty definitive for that. He doesn’t even love a man in uniform. He just kinda has to put up with it and try to gently influence UNIT into something better. (Which he does)

I watched this season again a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it. Never been a big fan of the 3rd Doctor because he always seems completely in control of everything. Pertwee the man was always a joy to meet though.

Camfield really should've directed more stories - like the Web of Fear and the Invasion he massively elevates everything here, including an excellent cast and some of the show's best action. It's a shame that illness and overwork meant that he stepped away from the series at this point, because he really was outstanding. Letts is solid as director, and stepped in for him here, but as we'll see in the next story, his instincts are very different!

I've always loved this story, one of my most watched. I've never thought of the Third Doctor as a 'Tory', and didn't even know there was a debate about this in 'fandom'. But in my Militant days in the eighties, me and those of my fellow comrades who were also Whovians (Yes, there were active Trotskyist-Whovians, though the Posadists would be more fitting than Militant: Look up Posadism!) used to say that he allowed himself to be co-opted by Britain's Secret Services, although he was by no means a yes-man. Actually, now I'm much older and much wiser, whilst forever a socialist, I can also see the character of the Doctor as embodying some of the better small 'c' English conservative values. Respect for life in all its wonderous, varied forms, yes, of course, but that also goes with the defence of the freedom of those who think differently to you. He should never be on board with 'cancel - culture', though I fear RTD 2 may have different ideas...Great channel, by the way. I only discovered it a couple of weeks ago, and I'm already up to date.

What made him this way....? I would be remis to not mention I, Alastair and The Schizoid Earth (in that order) in the LS range of books, which explore some of the origins of the Infernoverse. - AFA

The only lowlight of this one is the costume store/joke shop plastic monster teeth on at least some of the Primords. That's my nitpick on an otherwise flawless adventure. I don't agree with the Tory Doctor theory either.

Great story, but if I had to give it a negative, it would be the shaggy dog monsters. They are better in the earlier stages, they should have just settled for that. As for the Third Doctor Tory nonsense, the fact this is bought up today as an issue is more reflective of the world we live in now. The Third Doctor was all about brokering peace, which means associating with everyone for every background. Just because he doesn't hate those on the right doesn't make him right leaning. He rubs up against many Tory-like politicians, ie, in The Silurians, Claws of Axos and The Sea Devils, not to mention siding with anti-authority rebels in The Green Death, Frontier in Space and The Mutants. He had tolerance for those with different opinions, which more people today could learn.

Also I cannot see 3 being a Tory at all. With stories like the green death and many other moments he certainly feels like the most outwardly liberal doctor to me.

It’s a fun adventure, but I think it’s actually the weakest story of the season. I’m not entirely convinced that the themes and content match each other.
