Brilliant 2 part video! I recently had a relapse in my Crohn's disease after being in remission for about 5-6 years. I had been on the SCD and was med free - unfortunately I had gone off the diet and 2 years later here I am back on youtube relearning about the disease after a severe flare up!

@@westfield90 It's called the Specific Carb Diet. It's almost like paleo - I ate nothing but poultry, beef, and some vegetables. No sauces, sugars, grains, any processed carbs or anything like that. It's very restricting but I got used to it after a few weeks. The idea of the diet is to starve out the types of bacteria in the gut thought to activate the disease in those with IBD. The bacteria that thrive on sugars and carbs have nothing to eat so they die off basically. I'm sure it won't work for everyone but I was completely fine and med free for almost 6 years. I cheated on my diet for almost 2 years until my symptoms started to come back. I would highly recommend trying it.
@@94mac I strictly drank water/seltzer, and when I drank alcohol I drank whiskey or dry red wine. Outside of that for food - it was just beef, poultry, and stuff like green beans as a side. I would use natural peanut butter and sometimes had it with a very ripe banana. Soda is a huge NO-NO. Anything packed with sugar is thought to feed the bacteria that the immune system deems a threat in people with the disease. The only way to keep that bacteria out of the gut is to avoid foods that those bacteria thrive on.

This assuming greatest bioavailability of the drug to cells facing the colon cavity would be more beneficial than perfusing through the blood and reaching the lining of the colon.

Vedolizumab has has seen an increase in use as well) instead of an antimetabolite (MTX or 6-MP) or 5-ASA, which can be added to augment later.
Very very rarely can we go straight to a biologic as first line in IBD anywhere in the world; least of all the US with its private insurance companies requiring step therapy
Yeah Michael your wrong. First line of treatments are always 5asa then immunomodulators, and then biologics. Now drs May have a preference on which med based on clinical presentation but the med processes I layed out for you are known as the standard of care.

in terms of smoking… does that mean just cigarettes? or does smoking marijuana make crohn’s worse? i use it to help with my symptoms, but i will switch to edibles if it’s better for me. edibles just take so long to provide relief :(
