Maybe it wasn't as bad of an idea as you might think. In 1956, Goodyear combined their expertise in building inflatable airships and rubber tires, to develop an inflatable airplane. A plane small and light enough to pack up inside the family station wagon, that could be fully inflated and ready for flight in just five minutes. Earlier attempts at building inflatable aircraft had failed because inflated rubber was a poor material choice for aircraft, resulting in planes that were too slow, wobbly and structurally unstable to be of practical use. But Goodyear’s newly developed material called Airmat promised increased rigidity when inflated, while still being lightweight and flexible to be packed up inside a small container With Airmat, Goodyear was convinced that they could develop an inflatable airplane that could help save lives.

@@nicholasblanchette4293 well yeah, until you realize both the crashes weren't due to pilot error, but the fact the thing had absurdly low rigidity, even WITH the special material. On one, the prop was able to strike the aircraft, on the other a control cable jam caused the wing to fold. In other words, the strength of the pilot pulling on the cable was enough to fold the wing. Maybe with modern technology we could do it, but it's still super dangerous. Just rent a helicopter, it's way easier and safer, probably cheaper too.

Considering that a USED 1978 Piper goes for $35,000 with original 6 pack, an inflatable crash resistant single prop would be very good competition. Does it need more testing and developing? YES, but this thing could’ve really taken off if advertised to the public and sold at a reasonable price. It could be developed to have an amazing safety record, think about it, the whole thing is an airbag!!! I imagine Goodyear making millions by simply saying “Own a plane, go flying, all without the hangar fees”. It can also take off from grass strips, so that would make it even more awesome. I have a single and a 3 passenger inflatable kayak from Sea Eagle. I have owned them for about 6 years now and they’re amazingly convenient, especially since my only car is a 2 seater soft top. Never had a puncture either. I’m a huge believer in inflatables. I will say right now though, crosswinds cannot be above 7KTS 😂 You better have ATIS on 25/7. Respect that it’s an ultra light A/C, throw an optional parachute and that baby will sell like a water in the desert. You already got my money Goodyear, make it happen! (All four of my tires are Goodyear, I’m already invested!)
@zixx844
@zixx844 2 года назад
Yeah honestly, Goodyear is sitting on a goldmine with this thing and they don't even realise it. With some minor modification as well, you could easily make these things be able to take off from or land on water, which would be even more of a game changer. An ultra-light plane that you can store in your garage, be carried in the back of an SUV and only needs a lake or grassy field to take off or land would be a massive hit with just about everyone. I could easily picture resorts lining up around the block to buy two seater versions of these things to offer scenic flights to guests.

A large number of chemical reactions convert high density solid or liquid phase materials into a large volume of low density gas phase reactant products. Commonly familiar chemical reactions that do this include many types of "explosives", although many less rapid/less vigorous chemical reactions also do the same thing (including ordinary combustion of wood). There is really no good reason for the plane to need any manual inflation, even partially. Such would be a major waste of time and likely dangerous for the downed pilot. It would make far more sense to initially inflate ("blow up") the plane basically instantaneously with a small explosive charge instead. One "potentially interesting" alternative would be to use hydrogen as the inflation gas. There are various chemical reactions that can relatively quickly produce large quantities of hydrogen gas (from common/cheap ingredients like aluminum metal, ordinary water, and an acid or base to dissolve the surface oxide coating on the metal), which could hypothetically be used to quickly inflate the plane. As an added side "bonus", the plane would be extra buoyant in the atmosphere due to the lower density of hydrogen gas compared to atmospheric air. Hypothetically, if the inflatable plane was designed with large enough internal volume, the plane could take off vertically, without needing any forward velocity, landing gear, or initial air speed at all. Alternatively, one could design a blow up plane with ordinary air filling instead (ex: for perceived safety reasons), but with a tether attaching it to a large inflatable balloon that gets filled with hydrogen (ex: from a water + aluminum chemical reaction). After initial vertical lift off from the ground (via the buoyant hydrogen balloon), the hydrogen balloon could be released to cause the air filled plane to drop by gravity and gain air speed sufficient for controlled horizontal flight (without needing landing gear or a powerful/heavy engine necessary for short distance takeoff runs on "improvised" runways, which may not be available anyway in a jungle or other rough terrain). Currently designed military aircraft often come with "ejection seats", whereby upon activation rockets blast the seat and human pilot away from the destroyed plane, and then a parachute deploys to bring the pilot relatively gently to the ground. Conceptually, it is possible to design the ejection seat with a powered fan on the back and to use a paraglider style parachute, to achieve sustained continuous flight to help the pilot escape the hostile territory, without ever needing to touch down on the ground or needing any kind of extraction/rescue operation. One might assume that the ejected pilot may get shot down immediately, but this would not necessarily be true, as modern airplanes are too fast and high flying to be shot down with ordinary guns, and instead anti-aircraft missiles are typically used. However, anti-aircraft missiles are expensive, and not all militaries would be willing to waste an extra anti-aircraft missile shooting down a basically harmless ejected pilot simply trying to fly a powered paraglider back to safety.

One thing Mustard neglected to mention about the inflatoplane is exactly why it was made. Basically, after goodyear had finished making all the blimps that had been ordered, they found themselves with a ton of spare materials and some of the only dirigible engineers left in the world. These guys were going to be let go in a couple of months and they knew it. So, rather than just sit around and wait they decided "fuck it, I'm bored, lets make something out of blimp". The resulting inflatoplane was designed, built and flown within only a couple of months.

This is such an incredible idea and design. I imagine if chemical engineering gets advanced enough, there might be some type of coating that could continuously spread to seal any punctures, kind of like a self-sealing bike tube. That could help it stay going much longer after it takes any fire.
