This is just a simple conversation on some of the aspects of the maceration process. I use maceration to clean all kinds of skulls from deer, cattle, chicken, fox, etc. I am researching the topic and wanted to think out loud of some things related to what I am learning from my own experience and research.

How much water is need? Im working on a watusi skull and cant find a trash can or tub big enough that I can seal it. I have it sitting in a trash can with one horn down, poured some water in it, maybe a gallon or so, and double covered it with contractor trash bags and tape it to seal. Do you think that'll work?

I wonder how an aquarium with a bubbler and heater would work? Have you tried that yet? Changing the water might be more problematic but could probably siphon it?

I dont need to speak for Hunter but he does use a 5 gal. bucket with an aquarium heater. And it seems he always haves good results. But that is a good idea especially if you have larger or longer skulls.

Hey Nina! So yes I have actually tried adding an aerator to a maceration bucket and it did not work at all making the process much longer. I didn't know it at the time but Aerobic bacteria will get killed off if the oxygen levels are too high. So basically neither of the two bacteria can survive in an environment saturated with oxygen.

Have you measured the temperature? What does the heater keep the water at? Is there something to be said for maybe one changing half the water so some of the bacteria that is not on the skull but in the water remains?

Thanks for the great video, I was wondering if on like a antelope the sheaths just come off when submerged or if there was a way of getting them off that doesn’t involve boiling. Thanks again for the great video

Hey Kelton! Sorry this is so late! Yes, the horn sheaths will come off fairly early in the macerating process.

So keeping it aerobic should reduce bacterial staining? I get a lot of red film forming and gets into the pores, which is a problem when there's antler involved and you can't just whiten it out

You could use an aquarium pump to keep oxygening the water

So I actually did try this out and come to find out over-oxygenation will kill both types of bacteria. So that didn't end up working at all

I think the term you're looking for is "repopulate"? At least in my own microbiology research that's one of the terms used for bacteria growing back to its "initial scale" in a sample. (Sorry, English isn't my native language xD)
