@@megadim713 I know. I swear Hallstein has more fans in Uk than in Germany. Yes, her films are always abridged and has chintzy orchestrations but what a singer actor she is. The most natural coloratura I have ever encountered. Love that you post Lucia Popp too. I discovered Hallstein via Popp because of that Lustige Witwe album. I worked in a London classical cd shop in early 2000s and when that Artone 4cd Hallstein came in (we were only shop to sell it in Uk) we sold it out virtually every time we played it. The Mary Poppins in German is both hilarious and stunning. Oh please don't give up posting her work. Also I would love to contact you privately about matters Hallstein.

Operetta is not only about singing, but also acting. I have watched five video performances of this duet, and this is the best version in my opinion (though the lyrics were slightly altered). I think it is very well sung and acted, with many subtle nuances. Wunderlich sang the role of Jan in the excellent 1959 recording with Rudolf Schock and the spectacular Erika Köth (the most amazing Laura I've ever heard). The only Wunderlich recording of this duet I have is his 1957 recording with Friederike Sailer. I listened to that one again many times, but I consider this performance by Hallstein and Malm superior in terms of interpretation and empathy with the characters (helped by the fact that they were performing an entire operetta and not just recording an individual song). The hesitation and embarrassment of Symon were enacted very well. Wunderlich's early recordings (1955/56) of Symon's two arias are outstanding, but the 1957 recording of this duet with Sailer is less satisfactory to me. I feel the singing a bit too straightforward, slightly rushed and lacking in emotional nuances: shame, embarrassment, hesitation, uncertainty, confusion, disbelief, whimsy, improvisation, resolution, etc. If Wunderlich recorded this duet again later in his career, I would love to hear it. I'm sure it would have been different.

@@megadim713 Bitte nicht böse sein, aber für mich ob Oper oder Operette, das schauspielern interessiert mich nicht, sondern nur die Musik. Für Schauspielerei gehe ich ins Kino oder ins Theater. Aber Oper ist singen für mich. Am liebsten wäre es mir, dass die Sänger nur einfach ständen ohne was zu tun. Aber ich weiss, damit steh ich allein auf weiter Flur. Die armen Sänger-innen, müssen in unbequeme Kostüme gequält werden, Schuhe die schmerzen, herumrennen etc...und dann sollen sie auch noch anständig singen!!! Darum sag ich immer wieder, eine Oper für mich ist die Stimme, der Rest ist mir egal. Hoffe, Sie sind deshalb nicht böse. Kann Ihre Meinung verstehen, nur teile ich sie nicht. LG und schönen Tag. IM

For me, singing is only a small part of the operetta. The funny dialogs and fine lyrics (often with clever word plays), the acting, the dancing and the costumes are all essential parts of the operetta. That's why I find operetta so interesting, and why I have such respect for great operetta performers.

@@megadim713 da bin ich mit Ihnen einverstanden. Den Respekt hab ich auch, weil diese Künstler eine sehr schwere Aufgabe haben. Aber für mich geht der Ton vor, nicht das Schauspielern.

@@ingemayodon5128 Wenn man bedingt für eine Oper gelten lassen kann, dass das Wichtigste die Stimmen sind, ist eine Operette, die nicht auch gut gespielt wird in fast jedem Fall unerträglich. Die Stimme von Fritz Wunderlich war einzigartig, daran die Leistung von Curt Malm zu messen, ist nicht ganz fair. Er hat sehr rollendeckend gesungen und zusammen mit Hallstein war er in diesem Duett absolut überzeugend.
