The ‪@roguepandadesigns‬ Canelo Handlebar Harness isn't your typical handlebar system. Designed to be lightweight and stable, it also features their genius GlidePlate, a system that protects your headtube while securing the harness to your bike. Neil shares a detailed look at it in our latest video review...

Thanks for the review, Neil! We're stoked to have the bag finally launched. We spent a lot of time trying to create the best harness we could for singletrack bikepacking and we're stoked with the result. If you're reading this and looking to buy one - we're currently sold out but making more this week. In regards to a couple of comments thus far: 1) We're working on having the GlidePlate as a standalone product. Right now we're also trying to reduce our backlog of custom frame bags and that's our main focus for the production crew. 2) We chose the length of the rubber spacers for stability, but also so that the Canelo will work for shorter riders. Especially those riding 29ers with suspension forks, where the clearance between the handlebars and tire is pretty short. 3) We've glued on the rubber end caps for the production version, sorry about that Neil! 4) For what it is, we think the price is pretty fair. It's all US production and the rubber spacers, carbon tube and GlidePlate add to the production cost, compared to simpler options on the market.

$150 seems really steep, especially when compared to the Oveja Negra Front Loader that is 1/3 the cost (albeit without the GlidePlate).

I went to my local market to the sewing stall and picked up a bunch of them plastic connectors, some velcro, some strapping then got a garden bamboo cane, rummaged around the cupboard until I found some foam block. Used an old tent bag as a stuff sack, Got the needle and thread out and made my own for £10.

the glide plate is neat, I wouldn't mind rigging something like that up. As for a "harness" I just use a second stem with a cut down handlebar. not as lightweight, but it's sturdy AF and cheap.

Personally I got a Salsa anything cradle years ago and never looked back. You mention that you find harnesses that stick out in front can have funky steering characteristics but thankfully that never bothered me. What I really like about the salsa cradle is that it really gives your cables enough room to not get squashed or rub and I‘m not sure if a solution so close to the frame would work as well.

I’m in the same boat… Very happy with my salsa cradle after many years. I’ve angled mine down to lower the load and it allows me to strap something on the top of the cradle too.

Love the glide plate in theory, but I'd probably want to see a long term review before I picked one up. Despite taking the majority of the damage, I'd be concerned that the glide plate itself might move around a bit and rub - if that isn't a problem, then it looks awesome!

Wouldn’t a layer or two of helicopter tape applied to the front of the frame protect the frame well without the buffer strap?

Have you tried mounting bags to a front rack instead of to handlebars? My Trek 920 came with really stable front and rear racks. My thought is to strap dry bags to the racks instead of to the handlebars and seat post. I would still add a frame bag to the system and ditch the panniers.

Glide plate vs protective tape? Granted tape on some head badges might not be an option but still.

Interesting product. My only concern with the plate is the 17337 style webbing to same webbing is the constant rubbing. Nylon webbing doesn’t last forever, so hopefully these are replaceable. Really like seeing the UL side of bike packing products, seems like the carbon bar is a good substitute for lashing it right to the handlebars. I’d be interested to see what the side to side movement is. No matter the harness I find myself adding a bungee on either side of the bag to stabilize.

I'm considering this as an option but still torn between this and a handlebar pack. Could you tell me what the distance is between your drops at 04:06? From about where the shifters attach to drops to the other side. Thanks!

I would be curious if you have run this setup in muddy / wet conditions where dirty water would get splashed into the glide plate. Did the frame / plate mount hold the grit and basically put you back into the same wear issue as before or does it shed the grit somehow? Also, welcome to Gunnison :).

Still looking for a handlebar bag that fits between 40cm dropbar and with aerobars mounted underneath like airstryke profile designs on 52cm frame. Very little space left so I’m not sure anything works…
@AluinKali
@AluinKali 2 года назад
Have you checked out the rapha bar bag? It’s pretty small but since they are a road centric brand I would assume it would fit narrower drop bars. It might not be enough storage though depending on your needs. I have a Salsa anything cradle and that one works pretty well too. Since it has quite the big offset you can position the dry bag quite far away from the handlebar. Depending on the size of your frame you could position it lower and in front of your handlebar.

@@AluinKali I have a 10L dry bag for my sleeping bag. When rolled up I have about 1 inch gap to the tires. I think if I can compress with straps on harness I could increase that gap by 1 more inch. But I'm not sure yet. Was looking at the outer shell harness too. Thank you

I did something (kind of) similar with my bike a few months back. Took some tooling leather (something I have around the house already), cut it to fit my head tube, and used zip ties to secure it with the rough side on the inside toward the bike and the smooth side facing out for the handlebar bag to move against. Seems to be working okay. Probably around $10 in materials.
