Mars Helicopter Ingenuity broke its rotor blade during hard landing at flight 72. It has achieved a momentous milestone by surpassing its intended flight duration on Mars, lasting for over two hours. Originally planned for five flights and a 30-day operation, the helicopter far exceeded expectations. It completed an astonishing 72 flights, operated for nearly three years, and collected valuable data that improved our understanding of Mars' landscape. Ingenuity's flight missions allowed it to cover a distance over 14 times greater than planned, logging more than two hours of flight time. This showcases its robustness and durability in the harsh Martian environment.
During its last flight on January 18, 2024, the helicopter unfortunately suffered damage to one of its rotor blades during tough and hard landing, what makes it unable to fly again. However, Ingenuity's communication with ground controllers at Airfield Chi is uninterrupted. It has accumulated an impressive 128.8 flying minutes, covering a remarkable distance of 10.5 miles (17.0 km) and achieving altitudes as high as 78.7 ft (24.0 m).
I made 3D visualisation of Ingenuity's rotor blade damaged to see how it looks like visually.
Ingenuity's endurance, resilience, and ability to operate under extreme conditions have been showcased through its extended flight time and remarkable distance covered. The high-resolution images captured during its flights have enhanced our understanding of the Martian landscape. Despite the damage to its rotor blade, Ingenuity's success and scientific contributions remain undeniable. Stay tuned for more exciting updates on NASA's Mars groundbreaking mission!

I'm so impressed by this incredible little helicopter. No one thought she would make it through 72 flights... wow, what an amazing feat. If we colonize Mars, they will build a memorial around her. RIP 🙏

What a little legend! I am sure it could manage to fly, damage is not too drastic and might only have some out of balance vibration issues, I have flown model RC aircraft with damaged props with no dramas.
@amyhartman6786
@amyhartman6786 4 месяца назад
How is it going to do that when mars atmosphere is much more thin then here on earth, less than 1% then we have here. If rc aircraft has balance and vibration issues with damage blades on earth with this atmosphere, what do you think it would be like for NASA's drone to even be able to lift off again on mars? I am sure NASA knows what they are talking about they designed the thing, they would not just ditch it over a chipped blade if it was still capable of any flight.
@thomasprovencher4611
@thomasprovencher4611 4 месяца назад
Yeah, unfortunately the thinner air means those blades are huge for its weight relative to an earth bound drone/helicopter and they have to spin really, really fast which further exaggerates the imbalance.

As a UAV (drone) pilot, I can confirm several things about what seemed to have happened to Ingenuity. My UAVs also use a visual camera-based system to help with navigation & obstacle avoidance, & have both a color camera, & a number of lower-resolution black & white cameras, although they also have the benefit of having access to dozens of GPS satellites to aid in control & positioning when farther away from any objects - On Mars, no GPS satellites, or magnetic compass... Relatively featureless surfaces can & will cause confusion with the internal control system, as a result of conflicts between the IMU & what the camera sees, & this can & will likely cause stability & control problems. Of course, here on Earth, there is virtually no signal lag, & a human is available to compensate or to take manual control in any situation in real-time - Ingenuity, being so far from Earth, had no such real-time human control available due to the many minutes of signal lag between Mars, Earth, & back to Mars, & had to rely upon its own internal control systems; as advanced as they are, simply can't compare with a human at direct real-time control. Carbon-fiber composite propeller or rotor blades are incredibly strong for their light weight, but they are also very brittle, & likely even more so, in Mars' relatively colder temperatures, & at the speed of rotation that Ingenuity's rotors had to turn to fly, having them strike anything at all, even for an instant, would result in the damage indicated. Here on Earth, damaged propeller or rotor blades are easily & quickly replaced, but so far away on Mars... not so much! I'm so sorry to hear of Ingenuity's accident, & I've been cheering with every flight & scientific breakthrough accomplishment on Mars! Ingenuity went far above & beyond what was ever designed or expected - certainly a long string of successes which all of us can honor & celebrate! \o/

Even so it can fly. The damage is not great. The next one will be better. And it will be good to have support from many satellites on Mars to move everywhere on the planet. It would be good if it had a camera on all sides. Model helicopters are unstable when landing, a quadcopter with 8 propellers will last longer.

I am still not convinced that the damage was during flight 72 It may have happened on flight 71 during its emergency landing, There is not enough pictures after flight 71 showing all rotors shadows Flight 72 did not go as planned so maybe it was because of the damage from 71 Perseverance has got a picture of Ingenuity basically towards the top of a large sand dune ripple How did the rotors hit the top of that ripple and was still able too remain upright? Just saying...

Why drone engineers don't put protective arcs out of the blade's tips?? If the blade's tip hit something in flight or at landing, and it problably will break apart and the drone will not fly again!! It's easy to put an arc outside the blade's diameter, and it will not be heavy, but will be very useful as a protection!
@thomasprovencher4611
@thomasprovencher4611 4 месяца назад
On this case it's a matter of packaging. Inginuity had to fold up and fit under the main rover, including the blades, so an overall ring around the tips wouldn't have been possible here. Maybe in the future.
