I grew up in Inglewood in the 50’s. It was after WW2. My father worked in aerospace near LAX as a young GI right after the war. We lived in a duplex off of Arbor Vita and LaCienega. Housing was new and scarce. I went to 98 th street school until my parents sent me to St. John Chrysostom on Florence. My brother was born at Daniel Freeman Hospital. It was a great place to live. I used to ride my bike to Big Donut. Once Eisenhower decided America would build freeways, the city changed. It was desirable because of LAx so the landscape changed due to the freeways. My family eventually moved from the area and my house or neighborhood is no longer there. It saddens me. I would love to back there. We had alleys, detached garages and incinerators.

Born in LA, but largely grew up in Inglewood. Finally relocated to LA 7 years ago (Hyde Park area, part bordering on the Inglewood Park Cemetery). Don't miss Inglewood ONE DAMN BIT to this day except for that long-celebrated Randy's Chinese Food place on Market St. which I still have a serious hankering for every now and then, lol! More bad than good memories growing up there in general, plus it already started going downhill before I was even born (early-'80s). Schools were so bad, not even my own mother who used to be a teacher herself (Gardena HS) wanted me and my younger frat twin brother going to any of them. Neighborhood we lived in was well-known Blood territory at the time (Lockhaven), but it was those feral stray dogs I was more wary of when I was going out for a walk back then. Glad it's being gentrified left-and-right over this past decade, praying Clippers owner Ballmer finally decides to buy out that part of Inglewood I was forced to call "home" for far too long and gives it a much-needed makeover like it should've gotten back when the Lakers were still in town...

I grew up in Inglewood went to Morningside HS saw first hand the violence, gang infested schools and neighborhood. Saw many friend get killed was robbed multiple time once at gun point yet no one did anything. Not cops, not school officials not even the community. Now that things are finally getting better for the good people of Inglewood now they start talk about we need community to go back to the way it was. What's wrong with these people stop being idiots and help the good folks who not only live here, own property here, but are the only reason Inglewood has finally started to thrive. I for one am truly happy I feel much safer walking down the street, and even being in my own back yard. Something no living here could have said 10 years ago. It's in city's all over the west, southwest in into parts of the south. Plenty of that happening in the major city metros in Texas for the past 20 years, but you see less of that occuring in states like Alabama,Mississippi and Louisiana. @richardcogbill6791
@richardcogbill6791 2 года назад
$200K back in 2012 was too low for Inglewood it was more like $400K even during that recession. Today it's in excess of $600K. I know this because I've owned property there since the late 1990s. Inglewood is a majority minority city, but it is also a city of solid middle and working class black and latino residents who have owed their homes for years. They city has always encouraged home ownership and property improvement which keep the neighborhood values up. The city also has plenty of healthy retail and banking and the city is home to many small and minority owned businesses. Yeah it's nice that some of the more typical food chains like Starbucks, Jamba Juice, 5 Guys, Chipotle have planted stores in our city, but that won't stop community minded residents like me from patronizing our local soul food, fish-fry, Mexican food and pandarias any time soon. It's okay if some parts of the city cater to westside tastes as long as the city can maintain some of its cultural diversity. The opening of an over priced, trendy yogurt shop does not make any significant difference in the lives of most Inglewood residents. We don't really care. We mostly care about the loss of a small family run business that was a part of the community and that gave back to it.
@richardcogbill6791
@richardcogbill6791 2 года назад
So true. Even without the stadium development Inglewood has always had pretty stable, well kept neighborhoods that have steadily increased in value. The city has had a lot of retail business doing well. It's not like the stadium rushed in and saved some dying community. It's just attracted a lot of speculators trying to make a buck. I'm not against progress, but I'll always choose diversity both ethnic and income wise and a mom & pop small business Mexican food or fish fry place over an over priced, over hyped gourmet yogurt shop any day.

During that time Inglewood had restricted covenants, the government wouldn't even let black veteran purchase property in those areas. People should educated themselves on the history of wealth transfers, when blacks were allowed to buy into those areas, when and why white flight occurred, the Watts riots. The history may be an eye opener as why there are various opinions and how economic instability is still happening, many blacks neighborhoods were deliberately government sponsored failures by design.

It’s amazing how this talks about gentrification regarding the football stadium and these corporate businesses coming into Inglewood. However, the first gentrification was illegal immigration which imported a lot of poverty and crime into Inglewood no investor’s wanted to do business so Inglewood was on its way to bankruptcy. Those apartments and properties are owned by Corporations that were flipping the rent at 100% which was forcing a lot of Blacks out Hispanics were living three families into two bedrooms and we were paying that high rent that most Black people could not afford so Black people were being pushed out. Moreover, the city, county, and state were quiet for years until homelessness population became noticeable. So again we need to have a conversation about Illegal immigration, or the sanctuary cities that honor these people coming into already broken communities

@Ash Hegde It’s not about making better decisions. My parents worked all their lives in the agriculture sector because they didn’t have any type of diploma or degree. They gave up their self-growth to feed my siblings and I. It’s not about “moving out because you can’t afford or because you made bad decisions”. It’s the fucking stupid liberals overpricing everything and the low income folks have to pay. I wish California would stay with only high income earners and the 5percenters to see who the hell cooks their food, harvests their crops, cleans the streets, and who builds their “beautiful homes”. I speak for people that couldn’t make it not because of their decisions, but because they gave up their self-growth for the future of their kids. I don’t think you will understand, but I don’t care. Thankfully my 3 singling and I all have college degrees with great careers, but that doesn’t mean we forget where we came from. I think the best thing to do is getting more business owners in charge that are in favor of maintaining the initial situation and just extending upon it, if that makes sense. So the people already living there won’t get pushed out. But rather would be integrated with the new residents. I think this could be, in very simple terms, a way to stop gentrification and maybe even in-turn decrease racial tensions in this country. Since gentrification is a big contributor to clashes between white people and black/latino people.

Property Values are going up here. It is becoming to expensive to pay the property taxes of older retirees who have a fixed income for the past 10-15 years. This is the reason many people are having trouble making ends meet and are choosing to sell their homes and leaving Inglewood.

Why can’t it just be generational change and growth of a city? It costs more to live and work in California period!!! Early 1900s Inglewood was a farming community that became a recreational playground for the Hollywood jetset in the 30s-40s(Hollywood Park Racetrack) that changed into a White-Spanish and a few Black families working class neighborhood after World War 2 …The late 60s and early 70s I remember seeing more White people living and working in Inglewood. Mid 70s I noticed more Black people as well as Spanish people moving to and working in Inglewood with White individuals moving or passing away.Now it seems to be a mix of Black Spanish and to a lesser extent White people living and working in the area.

@Law19157
@Law19157 2 года назад
Neighborhoods have changed all the time. Gentrification is good, it turns ghettos into nice places to live. Instead of renting people should have owned their homes when prices were low. Home owners don't get pushed out only renters. Home owners see a nice property value increase which they can cash out upon retirement. Stagnating and remaining a ghetto is backwards thinking. When demand goes up and supply comes down, prices goes up, that's basic economics. Woke education has failed these people. If gentrification means driving the gangs out then I'd speed up the gentrification process. Rent control just incentivizes poverty, it keeps buildings in decay and disincentivizes people to seek higher paying jobs.

Latinos now make up the majority of South LA, & they’ll continue to do so, as the Chicanos get pushed out of East LA and more immigrants come through the open borders. Inglewood might see a minor influx of young single professionals, but Latinos will probably make up the majority in the years to come. After Covid, LA county is becoming very undesirable for well to do families, as the county’s schools are failing miserably and the taxing of the upper middle class. There’s definitely not going to be all that much of an influx of yuppies in Inglewood period, no well to do family would want to send their kids to those schools or deal with all of the typical Cali BS, especially in an area like Inglewood.
