Inglewood is believed to be one of California's last black enclaves, but a new NFL stadium and an NBA arena are threatening to displace residents that have called this city home for decades.
As rent prices spike, the city leadership is coming under pressure to find solutions between attracting big businesses and stability for residents.

My neighbors and I at 4949 W Century, appreciate how you presented our story, with such class and realness. The following day, I filed a Police report against the Contractor and his crew. The construction has been halted indefinitely since then. The City of Inglewood owns our building according to three evictions notices served during the moratorium naming them as the Plantiff and according to the County Accessor's office as of 11/20/19 listing the City of Inglewood as the owners of 4949 W Century.

Its good to see the city grow , however it sucks for the city to lose its “Soul” Im born and raised in Venice and had to move to the valley bc it got so expensive and people from out of state can afford a 2k 300sqft shack.... They come with their ways back home and like inglewood its gonna lose its Venice vibe and heritage.... you dont see those crazy whiteboys in their long boards cruising with their long hair anymore.... this is the venice i knew.... Now its hipsters who think they are the shit bc they live in Venice and think they run the whole city, not to mention their little coffeee shops on every corner

I literally just watched a documentary on Baltimore who is experiencing the same thing. Respectfully as a race we bare some responsibility of this. There’s no reason after all these years that Inglewood is full of renters. Also we need to learn how to work as a group. Mega investors are nothing more than a group of likeminded people with a goal in mind. We need to take note.

Absolutely agreed!! That's why organizations like Uplift Inglewood are important. Aside from protecting residents, they are also aiming to educate them about homeownership.

Ben you should stop moving into white neighborhoods and destroying them and stop complaining about white people moving into your neighborhood and rebuilding them

@@bbgg4802 no one destroys white neighbourhoods. What happens is the whites move in and try everything under the sun to get rid of blacks. They tried it in bed stuy where blacks own homes, now they're here and low key pissed full of tension since they can't price blacks out

So everyone is responsible because people moved here and lived here for decades and decided to rent rather than buy? These same people who claim they wanted to stay, criticized the city, wouldn’t shop here, wouldn’t do much business here and was prepared to move. Now, they suddenly want to always stay here, even if they didn’t decide to buy. You notice the main person complaining, said he got involved be his rent increases. Rent control is a joke. It’s unfair to the owner. Now the owner can’t change his own property, without people feeling they have a right to stay there. I can’t wait until they own something.
@char5355

I'm all for owners doing substantial modification on their properties and making a profit, however there are laws in place to protect both landlord and tenants. In the case of the 4949 W Century property, what you don't hear in the documentary is the City owns this property and has vehemently denied it. 3 Eviction notices and the Los Angeles County Accessor's office have confirmed their ownership. The residents in the building have been threatened and harassed by the Contractor and those very construction workers in the documentary on various occasions, including but not limited to, and again what you don't hear in the documenary ALL the electrical outlets were off in the apartment where the documentary was filmed. The resident had no power to her stove or refrigerator for 5 days she had to syphon power from her neighbor: A FIRE HAZARD!!!! Since the City chose the interest of their property, the Rams, Chargers and the Clippers over the lives of the; children, elderly and disabled remaining in the building: the demolition dust exposed these residents to asbestos. Yes, they the City, have a right to do what they want to their property, what they don't have a right to do is jeopardize the health and safety of these tenants and for that they must be held accountable.

This is so well put together. So many don’t think about how these mega investors come in and drive so many people out. Something similar has happened in my city. An area that was once the least desirable has become the next hottest thing, and people could not afford it and had to move out.

What an important doc. I hope you send out press releases to the media. Outright shame that this is going on. I thought it was bad when my landlord increased rent by $300 a year. Had to move out on year 3. It should be a criminal offense to gouge renters they way that some tenants in Inglewood have been gouged.

This is very important and hopefully something changes. Residents honestly have to get together to evoke change. Someone will have no choice but to listen. Basically gentrification. Check out the Gentrified film if you’re interested. It speaks on a lot of this that has gone on in cities and them all masking it as “new jobs & expansion”.

@@SolSkinn Heather, don’t get me wrong, I loved Inglewood, I have very fond memories of it, I spent 3 years (‘64-‘67) at Morningside High School (Go Monarchs). As a boy I sold the L.A. Times newspapers at the Hollywood race track, I hug out at AH-HAs Hamburger Stand on W. Century Blvd where In-N-Out Burger sits now. It was home to me, until the Watts riots (1965) then it wasn’t. With time comes change, I just didn’t like the change in my old neighborhood, that’s all I was saying, no smack, just my opinion. ✌️

@@MichaelSSmith-hs5pw my mom had a hard time with bussing too. I don't think it was easy for anyone. I'm sure white parents warned their kids about the new kids coming to school. I'm sure parents of the kids being bussed warned their children. Everyone acted out of fear and trauma. I think that is just beginning to heal. My grandma and her siblings lived in Inglewood, but for whatever reason went to leuzinger. It was much different. My mom and her siblings ended up in westchester schools.

@@SolSkinn you know, when I lived there, 1959-1967 is a whole different time from what you are talking about, my life there was just a far off memory by the time you experienced Inglewood. My time there & your time time there are two different worlds. So I can’t really understand the way it was for you, just like you’ll never know what it was like for me. I say again, the years I lived there were good, I just wouldn’t live there now. 🙏👋

Suggestion - should put titles over man with cotton in his nose stating there is a reason. Very odd to have to look at him with the cotton in his nose before an explanation comes (much later). It's a turn off.
