CLIP DESCRIPTION:
At the basement tavern, Major Hellstrom (August Diehl) plays a card game with Lt. Archie Hicox (Michael Fassbender) and Bridget von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) where you guess the real or fictional character. He is the character King Kong.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A group of hardened Nazi killers stalk their prey in Nazi-occupied France as a Jewish cinema owner plots to take down top-ranking SS officers during the official premiere of a high-profile German propaganda film. As far as Lt. Aldo Raine (aka Aldo the Apache," Brad Pitt) -- is concerned, the only good Nazi is a dead Nazi. Raine's mission is to strike fear into the heart of Adolf Hitler by brutally murdering as many goose-steppers as possible, or die trying. In order to accomplish that goal, Lt. Raine recruits a ruthless team of cold-blooded killers known as "The Basterds" which includes baseball-bat-wielding Bostonian Sgt. Donnie Donowitz (aka "The Bear Jew," Eli Roth) and steely psychopath Sgt. Hugo Stiglitz (Til Schweiger), among others. When the Basterds' secret rendezvous with turncoat German actress Bridget von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) goes awry, they learn that the Nazis will be staging the French premiere of "The Nation's Pride," a rousing propaganda film based on the exploits of German hero Fredrick Zoller (Daniel Brühl), at a modest theater owned by Jewish cinephile Shoshanna Dreyfus (Mélanie Laurent), posing as a Gentile after the brutal murder of her family by the ruthless Col. Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz). As the Basterds hatch an explosive plan to take out as many Nazis as possible at the premiere, they remain completely oblivious to the fact that Shoshanna, too, longs to bring the Third Reich to its knees, and that she's willing to sacrifice her beloved theater in the process.

He did it on purpose. Hes smart and he knows what hes doing. Theres a dual display here. It shows his love for the chase and his sharp wits. The other fact is it reveals a hint. In Germany, you wouldn't answer the last question, the question about being a slave. The British guy, however, doesnt know this and answers "no". If you notice hes the only one at the table who says anything at that point. The detective picks up on this and looks directly at the British man as he gets his first suspicion. The scene is brilliant in so many noticable and unnoticeable ways.

This is a brilliant scene for two reasons: 1. We can see how intelligent the detective is and how much he enjoys the thrill of the chase. The tension builds as he gets closer and closer to figuring out the truth, so great job on the delivery and the chemistry with the other characters 2. Tarantino made a great connection between the atrocities committed at the hands of the 3rd Reich and the atrocities carried out by slavery, which he would later cover in Django.

@colombi1anjay 9 лет назад
I didn't understand your argument against my first point, but I'd be happy if you tried rephrasing it. I'd argue that you can see how proud he is of himself when he figures it out, and even chooses against the easy question, so yes, he did enjoy the challenge.

There are several things which in my opinion arouse the suspicion of Hellstrom, all of which progressively identify in his mind that the officers at the bar are not who they say they are. 1. Hellstrom is gestapo and high rank. He knows everyone worth knowing in the region and appears to be a regular at the bar, having a beer and reading a book. For three officers to arrive that he does not know it would be unusual, hence his entrance and inquisition. 2. Hiscox's german is good but even as a non-german speaker you can tell he has an unusual accent. This warrants further probing by hellstrom. 3. Hiscox in earlier scenes is quite British in his mannerisms. You can see this in how he ignites the lighter, his forced smile and laugh, and his distinctly different style to the other Germans in the scene. At this point he is not quite sure, as it would imply that von Hammersmark is a Spy, something which would be quite incredible given someone of her status. Hellstrom invites himself to the table to dig further. 4. Stiglitz is finding it difficult to contain his malice with no reason, as they are both essentially on the same team. Hellstrom picks up on this and adds it as another piece of the scene being not quite right. 5. Hellstrom sets a trap when the game starts. He writes on the card Brigitte Horney, a famous German actress from 1943. In an earlier scene when Hiscox is briefed on his German cinema experience he mentions the gap of his knowledge in the last 3 years. Presumably because no British cinemas would be screening German cinema during the height of the war. Hellstrom picks this character so when it is his turn to play the came Hellstrom could probe Hiscox whether he knew an actor that he should know given his earlier cover story of his family being actors. 6. During the game Hiscox is the only one that answers the last question in the game. In the German version you are not supposed to answer. This makes Hellstrom do a subconscious snap look which he then covers up by winning the game. 7. The three finger order is incredibly out of place, and the whole table knew it. It was at this point that high suspicion had turned into near certainty, perhaps 95% in Hellstroms mind. What was before a game of cat and mouse by Hellstrom suddenly became serious and you can see his disposition change from jovial to serious. The big breath at @ shows this. 8. To seal the deal, Hellstrom says 'a thousand year reich', something which would have been a common and second natured saying to German soldiers and officers at the time. Hiscox is unpracticed in this saying, having been in Britain and with no real reason to say it. This is the nail in the coffin for Hellstrom giving him enough confidence to pull a gun on the other officers.
@countdebleauchamp
@countdebleauchamp 3 года назад
Thanks for explaining no 5. Also, regarding no 6, why doesn't the game, as it's played in Germany, just set the limit at 9 questions, as opposed to having a rule to not answer the 10th question? Apparently August Diehl was the backup plan to play Landa had they not discovered Christoph Waltz. Waltz was obviously perfect for the role but Diehl probably could have played it too - character would obviously have been different but I am guessing he could have pulled it off.

I don't know about that man, in many interviews Tarantino has explained that he had decided not to shoot the movie at all unless they found the perfect actor for Landa, and that he had already given up when a producer convinced him to do one last round of castings and there they found Christoph Waltz.

One little thing about this scene is that it shows that the German major is very clever, with a great attention to detail, much like Landa. However, unlike Landa, he thinks too rashly and confidently at the end, fails to consider some very important details, and just about comes up short in getting the right conclusion. Similarly, he methodically deduces that Hicox is a spy, but impulsively tried arresting him on the spot without considering that the other men at the table would be with Hicox, or that Hicox would already be prepared to draw on him, leading to the Major's death and nearly everyone in the room. Unlike him, Landa was a lot more careful and sensible. He never played his hand too early, always making sure that he had complete control of the situation, which is why almost everything for him goes off without a hitch, (save the Swastika scarring he got from Aldo, which I don't think anyone could have predicted).
