@Oussamatha I wouldn't say I speak any of them fluently anymore unfortunately - I grew up speaking German up until about age 5 or 6 (my dad's first language was German), Spanish was my main foreign language throughout school, and I lived in France for awhile with my Francophone ex, so I'm familiar with all three, but sadly nowhere near Brühl's proficiency.
@@abelnicolae idk to me it sounds like pretty good Spanish, although it's been awhile since I was listening to Castillian Spanish (the last time I was there was in '98).

Brühl was born in Barcelona, Spain. His father was TV director Hanno Brühl, who was born in São Paulo, Brazil, of German origin. His Spanish mother is Marisa González Domingo, a Catalan teacher. He has a brother and a sister, Oliver and Miriam. Shortly after his birth, his family moved to Cologne, Germany, where he grew up and attended the Dreikönigsgymnasium. He thinks she is impressed by his pathetic fame, but her interest now only comes from knowing he is a high profile target that she may be able to help eliminate. What he assumed was attraction, was actually her desire to kill him. Brilliant.
@Jackalofdeath All fame is pathetic-especially that of a nazi scumbag ..Lol..being congratulated by other nazi scumbags. Says a lot about your character...being impressed by a "famous" nazi
Which is fucking retarded. Many relationships are pursuits. Many *happy* long term ones are ones that were earned through some kind of a struggle. Whether it was the man pursuing the woman, the woman pining for the man. Some people end up dating all of each other's friends until they figure out their health match was the one they didn't pay much attention to in the first place. This nonsense being spouted here is exactly why men and women aren't connecting. Anything that seems "dominating" on the man's part is now somehow classified as sexual harassment.
@@Feuergraf Nope. I've watched it in the original version but with french subtitles, so Netflix would subtitle the German and English parts, but this German part wasn't. Same with the German parts when Shoshanna meets Goebbels and needs his wife to translate. It was kinda frustrating not to understand those parts but it really put me in Shoshanna's head. I guess that's what Tarantino wanted
This Movie has three of the best multilingual actors in the game. Brühl, Waltz, and Kruger. -EDIT- I mistakenly mentioned Fassbinder. He's good but not on the level Diane Kruger
Don’t forget Diane Krueger. Also as far as best multi-lingual actors, I’d put Matthias Schoenaerts and Eduardo Noriega over Fassbender. He only speaks English and German and I don’t think he’s ever actually done a German film. Noriega’s been in Spanish, English, and French films. Schoenaert’s been in Dutch, French, and English.
I love how we are viewing this interaction through the lens of a non German speaker, so we don’t get any German translations. It’s such a cool detail through this movie.
It makes me think how much more successful Tarantino is than Chris Nolan in conveying meaning and motivation even in gaps in dialogue. The way Nolan drowns out the dialogue with loud music like in Tenet is just annoying even if it's intended to be artistic. Inglourious on the other hand is just brilliant.
@@bobby_hill8357 ? The reason she's interested in his clout is because she wants to kill him. Watch the film before projecting your values onto random RU-vid clips, incel
I like the decision to not have subtitles when they are speaking German, so as to allow us the audience to view the interactions through the eyes of Shoshanna
@Daycrist He has the Iron cross tho (second class)... look at his uniform, second button from the top, there is the ribbon as it was meant to be worn inside of the tunic. He also has the infantry assault badge over the left pocket in the tunic.
@@erkergul Indeed, and she DID insist to know about him. I for one definetly like how Quentin Terentino with his choice of words in dialogue underlines a few interessting thing and humanizes characters... and yet doesnt shy away from the violence. At the same time he gives the audience a mirror and that is utterly apparent in Inglorious Basterds. Just as the Nazi audience is cheering for Friedrich Zoller in the Cinema, in the real world the american Audience was probably cheering for Aldo and his basterds... Despite the fact that we are all human beings and capable of empathy, we still do terrible and unforgiveable things to one another. And that is something that i think Mr. Terentino is capturing incredibly well in most (if not all!) of his movies.
I think it is quite obvious in this scene that he is not entirely proud of his accomplishments and is just answering her questions, not trying to impress her. "Comical?" before Shoshanna leaves is the big marker for me. And while he expected some reaction from her in the scene where he introduced himself, I believe that if he _really_ wanted to impress her by his accomplishments, he'd come up with something like "oh haven't you heard about me? I killed 300 people yep I did!". With that said, I think he was not trying to "woo" her, he was just acting of genuine interest and with good intentions towards her, but without knowing her background, which makes their plot line quite tragical.
I think his character genuinely liked her but by the end of the movie after he has had his ego pumped up by every German he meets he cant take the rejection anymore
I just realized something: Frederick's name could be a (mocking) reference to Frederick the Great, of the Prussian royal house of HohenZOLLERn. That would be amazingly clever, because the Nazis idolized him and he adored French culture.
88 is an often used "hidden" symbol of neo-nazi groups referring back to the alphabetical numbers of HH, meaning "Heil Hitler". Sounds fancy enough for a brigade of murdering mercenaries and fits this scene with the nazis perfectly as well. :)

I’m here looking at the Zemo comments because RU-vid knows I watch Falcon & the Winter Soldier and knew I would watch this. Also: I think I watched Pitt’s opening scene the other day.
People discover Daniel played Fredrick in Inglorious Basterds NOW, while I met him here in 2009, fell in love with his accent in French, and started hard rooting for Zemo before Civil War was even out.... XD
Rejected by this beautiful French woman, Colonel Helmut Zemo disguised as a Nazi soldier during French occupation goes on to sabotage and insight unrest among The Avengers.
I know that this is only a movie, but the french girlfriend of the german soldier would have been shaved and beaten for fraternizing with the enemy after liberation.
Throughout history, relationship between invading men and women of the invaded region is common, and practical. For all they know they could be there for a while.
Chevalier de Bellerose There is film footage of french women who were shaved, beaten and paraded through the streets of paris, as an act of treason. Of course not all suffered the sane fate but it did happen. And I never said anything about “execution”.
The most amazing thing about this flick is when I watched it for the second time, I’d forgotten so many of the best scenes didn’t have a word of English. Yet with facial expressions, body language and tone of voice, the drama is still there even though I was reading subtitles. Gotta hand it to QT.
That is a common exaggeration. Hugo Boss designed the SS (Black Shirt) uniforms, the SA (Brown Shirt) uniforms, and the Hitler Youth. All of these were inspired by the German Army uniforms of the Weimar Republic which were not very different from the uniforms Germany used in World War 1, the main difference was the vast majority lacked the collar patches which then became standard during the Weimar period. All of these were well before Hugo Boss got involved. Anyway, the point is that Hugo Boss didn't design the German uniforms from scratch but only tweaked them for a couple branches of the service (namely the Nazi Party groups like the SA and SS that weren't technically the military).
Dude c'mon, you know EXACTLY why she isn't interested. You invaded her nation, killed 150+ French men, and then pretend "nah its just a uniform." Thats like if a KKK member walked into a Black meeting and said, "nah its just a uniform"

No, he killed 150+ members of the allied army trying to kill him back. It's just a uniform, people fight for their countries and screw other countries all the time. Her nation invaded many other nations in the world, the French owned a large part in Quebec, Africa and South East Asia.
