Wow ! Few have this kind of touch . To play Mozart with this kind of exactness, detail , phraseology and touch takes an amazing technique. We all can bluster through a Liszt sonata or Chopin etude but soft utter sensitive playing like this is almost imposible. Her first phrase blew me away .Her tempo in finale is emphatic totally individual !But noone sounds this really sensitive to every note .Her slow movement IS a miracle of artistry, imagination and pianism ! compared to every other recording ! I will never know physically how she gets some of these phrases and touch the way she does.Utter taste .Kraus uses too much pedal and is rough in areas .Haskil ,Uchida ,Geiseking ! often great in Mozart ! I ve heard eveyrone and this is really one of the best Mozart idealizations possible ! .Lili Krauss is wonderful in this b,Pires,BArenboim ,Radu Lupu ! Levin ,Curzon ! Perahia ,Horszowski(only pianist of his generation to get Mozart right along with Alicia deLaRocha - so few had the ianistic ease or enough sense ! .Few Russians play Mozart well.I just heard some of the greatest Mozart from Lisitsa in her d minor concerto.I knew she was a great virtuoso - now I think she is really a great musician !Haebler could teach Schnabel (never a good Mozart player in my estimation !Arrau,Landowska !yuck, yuck, the whole array of pianists born before 1940 good taste and judgement in mozart . Divine and oh gawd it is so impossibly difficult to play Mozart like this .Chopin etudes are esy compared to this kind of phrasing and articulation and unbelievable, shaping , dynamics . Brendel knows she is incomparable !!! The finest Mozartean ALIVE . If she is still in Salzburg she must still be untouchabe in Schubert and Mozart. I have her in the Chopin valses Phillips was right she is one of the greats !
She's phenomenal IMO..Everybody wants the flashy stuff but to play this music in this amazing manner is as you have noted true artistry, and exactly what makes the music come completely alive!
similarly, just discovered her on YT with Szeryng doing the piano/violin sonatas-the best, along with Klein/Grumiaux.She brings a certain type of precision and simple beauty, dignity. Thanks
Linda!
I fully DISAGREE! Richter's rendering is much too fast to my taste, making this masterpiece sound rather sloppy and without the absolutely necessary stability and balance of rythm and quality of keyboard tone. No, Ms Haebler's interpretation is techniqually perfect and musically certainly interesting, if I may say so. But, to be really, really honest, I'm still waiting for the type of interpretation I've been hearing in my dreams, without having been able to discern who the angel might be, sitting at the keyboard in that mysterious dimension!!!
In my opinion this is just the right speed. So much good music is ruined by artistes who play like they are running for a bus. The only criticism I have with some Mozart sonatas is the unnecessary loud endings after a lovely soft phrase that could have been a perfect ending for a nice relaxing listening session. However this is NOT a criticism of this performance - she lady is only playing as written.
