The song isn't about breaking up with someone and giving up on them. It's about giving up on all the fears and hesitation a person may have when they really fall in love with someone. She's giving up on making passes (dating other people), half filled glasses (pessimistic views), and greener pastures (imagining the perfect guy/life). Instead, because she's so in love and serious about her man, she is going to give up her worries and fears about the future and have faith :)
I love this. Her songs are always best suited for long rides, be it travelling alone or with a bunch of noisy commuters, with a window seat overseeing the city pass by, preferably on a rainy day with her songs plugged into your ears are just comfort i'd say.
this song is definitely about giving up on looking for someone else. It is saying "I have you, and I am not going to waste time thinking about what else is out there--my cup is half full, the green grass is on THIS side of the fence, no matter what things end up happening, I choose you. I choose to stop looking for someone else. Even when it is tempting to do so." I am playing this at my wedding because marriage exemplifies that choice.
i think shes giving up on perfection and accepting whats real... its like the realization that perfection is way to hard/impossible to reach and the acceptance of imperfection is probably just as good. without the need of worrying about being perfect all the time, life is much easier, and much better because it's more satisfying. i give up on perfection too. i'm happy with what i have :)
The song is saying she's giving up on negativity (half empty glasses) also that she's giving up on always thinking that the grass is greener on the other side, being content with what she has and not thinking there's better. She's not giving up on someone, she's giving up her fears and "What ifs" to be with someone. Giving up has a negative connotation, but that's not the case here. "What if our baby comes in after nine" is her saying what I'd our kid come in late, past curfew.
She means she is giving up on making passes on other people, other kind of lives, greener grasses FOR him - meaning that she is complete and satisfied with her life as long as she is with him.. not that she is giving up on life, or him...
I just discovered this fantastic performer. Wow. I mean, I'm normally a metal and hard rock sort of guy, but there's something about the simplicity of Ingrid Michaelson that just speaks to me. I love it. :)
i think the song is saying that she has all these pessimistic thoughts and fears about commitment... but she's letting all her fears go and taking a chance on this guy. eg: "I am giving up on half empty glasses" --obviously a glass half empty has always been a symbol of pessimistic perspectives. and also "I am giving up on greener grasses" --referring to the common saying 'The Grass Is Always Greener On The Other Side' & then finishes off the song saying "I am giving up for you." -i love it.
I long for the day when this song will fit my situation perfectly!!! How I want to experience to love someone completely. Letting go of all the insecurities and what ifs then just fall perfectly in someone's arms! For short, i wanna be in love! :3
Exactly! IT's more about worrying and having hesitations in relationships rather than ending a relationship otherwise why would she worry so much about the future?
i agree it's a song about giving up everyone else FOR someone, like moggetlova said. It's about all the insecurities someone has while starting a new and wonderful relationship. Giving up on making passes, on half empty glasses...those are other people, other possibilities. It is all her worries about the new relationship ending someday, too..just beautifully written.
My sister just went to her concert. I only started listening to her songs after she had bought her tickets. Now I seriously can't believe that I missed out on that; these songs are unbelievably good.
This song hits close to home with me...I'm in the best relationship of all time with a wonderful guy...and all the things I've been through in the past have caused me to be so hesitant...but as I've grown up, I realize now it's about letting go of the past and giving the other person the best of you, even though you're unsure of the future. I know no matter what happens, you'll still be there for me, Andrew. And I'm here for you, too :) I love you.
I love her becasue shes a real person. She's not overdone or extreme like lady gaga, or has alot of bad publicity like lil wayne or miley cyrus. She's a real person!
At first I thought this song was sad but when I listened closely it's actually really beautiful. I think it's more about growing older with the one you love and the things you fear could happen, but you love them so much that you're willing to give up all of those worries for them. You're going to live in the present and be happy with what you have because of your love for them. That's just what I think of when I hear it anyways. :)
things happen in relationships, and people try to hard to make them not. People arent always going to see eye to eye, some people are just taller than others, and so we need these differences, but they are needed to form a true relationship because if nothing is wrong, then something definitly is
Oh my God, this woman is incredible. I want to wake up with this woman every morning for the rest of my life and listen to her craft these gorgeous lyrics. And make babies.
although this song is great, i can never listen to it all, and although it can definitly serve as a reminder to any relationship, it would always make me feel wretched inside doing anything to the girl that i love with all of my heart. If i ever gave up on her, i would feel as though i were giving up on myself and it is because i love her more than anything
@Chherryll that is actually the most accurate description of her songs, when i used to ride the bus to school really early in the morning, i would just find a seat in the back or corner by myself and just listen to her songs with my big stereo headphones, and just look out the window as we passed streets and people, i miss having that kind of solitude=[
aww this song is so cute...i've just start listening to her songs and their really good...she reminds me alot of sara barielles type of music, luv it!!! :D
She's giving up because she realizes she no longer has to settle -- there are no greener grasses to be found... she has finally found her heart's desire despite her own flaws. She no longer has to search.
I see this as a relatively happy/positive song. I think she's still optimistic. She's saying that she's giving up on having a perfect relationship. she realizes that's pretty difficult, and she's settling on what she has - the reality of their relationship and just reality in general. and that's okay.
@saldoja - my interpretation was a bit different. I don't think she's saying she's giving up on the person she's loving. Quite the opposite. She's saying 'to hell with all the what-ifs' and diving into the relationship. She's 'giving up' all the uncertainty of dating, the negativity of loneliness, etc. She's giving up all that stuff to be with someone that she loves enough to find even if they feel lost, and to share all those incidental details of an entire life together.
It's funny to see how people translate the song differently. She's saying yeah things are rough, and not perfect but I'm not giving up. She's staying with him instead of trying to find something better. I think that's the beauty of music tho, it's whatever you need it to be. We can all take a song for what we want it to be.
this song is so amazing.... I dated a guy about a year ago and I broke up with him because.... i was scared... and it was stupid. I always wished I could take it back, last night he called me, we were on the phone for 3 hours he told me that he still loved me and that he missed me. For three hours! This morning I woke up and turned my phone on; it was him. A text message saying that he was going to ask another girl out. The first thing i thought about was this song. Im giving up.
Does anybody know of any songs with a similar message as this song? I love it so much and I'd enjoy more songs with the same/similar meaning. I appreciate any input :)
I don't think it's quite "settling" or "sinking down" as it has been put...I think it's about giving up those things willingly because she is with a person she loves enough to actually consider this for the first time. Not necessarily giving up expectations and false hopes, but letting go of the fear of her heart getting broken in any of a multitude of ways, giving up that "way out" (a terrifying thing to do) and loving someone with her whole self.
@Kiwisrnummy you let me think when we fall in love after time will be more difficult change our lives but with love and patience love can grow, but we need give up many tnings that we have before like to do things god for ourselves. best regards
yeah, it's indie, kind of pop, i dunno, i wish there was a genre that was called cute-and-quirky-songs-that-have-simplisitic-sweet-and-meaningful-lyrics-and-get-featured-on-grey's-anatomy :D in my iTunes it's categorized under "other"... heh heh.
=.= how come no one understand this song at all.....it's not about giving up on something and walking away x.x it's about giving up other opportunities and priorities FOR someone...because they mean that much to you. Please cut it out with the comments about giving up on people and actually listen to the song...
