Initial Impressions of the Panasonic GH7 from DPReview 

Looking like DPreview is starting to thrive again. Wonderful to see.

It's hard to top Chris and Jordan as hosts, but the new presenters could at least stand to, you know, show their faces on camera. One thing I really appreciate about Chris and Jordan is how they don't just tell the viewer something about a camera but actually show something to illustrate their point...often in comedic ways. It's extra effort, but it pays off. If you watch the PetaPixel episode about the GH7, Jordan does an outstanding demonstration of why someone might want to record video at 240 fps with audio.

@@danieldougan269 DPreview existed long before Chris and Jordan came on board, and for those of us around for the longer haul, they are a much smaller portion of the long long history of reviews the site has been making. So while their time there was entertaining, it is far less important to me that they are gone, than that the site is rebuilding to what it always was before Chris anf Jordan, a good solid review site. I am more interested in the gear than the stars. It is very different to Digital Rev, which was 100% built and driven by Kai, Lok, and Lambie. When their Hong Kong owners decided to be A h*les, and their stars left the show, the show died because the show was the stars. Not so with DPreview. Their owners were idiots for taking decisions that caused them to lose their stars, and I think they were surprised by the level of community support DPreview recieved that had nothing to do with Chris and Jordan, but more to do with their vast body of reviews from before Chris and Jordan, and nice to see them getting back to those core resources.. I applaud the current presenters for not trying to fill the Chris and Jordan boots, but doing things in their own lower key style. It works for me.

It could be, you'd probably want the GH7 (or G9II) if you wanted Auto-Focus. Although if you're okay with a wide-angle view a recent GoPro is a cheap way to get really good stabilisation (you can shoot in a linear mode and crop 4k out of the centre to reduce the FoV)... or a smaller gimbal and a smaller camera... Of course at least food allows a second take :-)

The G9II and the GH7 or both stabilization beast. The GH6 was good too.

The GH7 can output a Raw video feed over HDMI but it'll almost certainly be in 12-bit. To be clear, though, almost all stills/video hybrid cameras only output 12-bit video because almost all of them create their video by reading out their sensors in 12-bit mode. I can't think of any mass-market camera that reads out its sensor in 16-bit for video. Fujifilm's X-H2S uses 14-bit in some modes but that's only because it has a stacked sensor. Most cameras have to drop down to 12-bit mode in order to read out fast enough to make the video usable. For example the 24MP full-frame sensor used by Sony, Panasonic, Nikon and Sigma takes around 21ms to read out the sensor in 12-bit mode but over 50ms (ie: 1/20 sec) in 14-bit mode. This means it can't quite read fast enough to produce 24p footage in 14-bit. Some recent Sony cameras say they output "16-bit Raw" but it's extremely unlikely that this 16-bit stream comes from a 16-bit source: it's much more likely to be 12 or 14-bit. Most sensors don't read fast enough to output video in 16 bits and very few capture enough dynamic range to be worth encoding in 16 bit precision (the a7S III / FX3 sensor /might/ be an exception as it bins the results from four small pixels, so may be combining multiple 12-bit signals in a 16-bit space). - Richard Butler

Somebody said its only for the GH7 because of its hardware supporting the 32 bit float.

​@@Filmmaker809 It's the AD conversion hardware in the XLR2 attachment. So it is quite possible other cameras could support it with firmware.

That was the plan but Gear Patrol stepped in and saved the day. We're very much still here.

They're on their last legs. Site is a shadow of what it was 5 years ago and impossible to read with ads everywhere.

I'm a A7R5 owner the two features I am interested in on the GH5 are the stabilisation and the 32 bit float. Bit I'm not sure if the small sensor would be right for the work I do that includes shooting food and drink in bars and restaurants

Good question. I think it’s mostly semantics, but a LUT has a standardized file structure that can be transferred across systems and read by most photo/video programs.

Filters are color and tone presets, usually defined by the manufacturer with some brands providing software to allow you to modify or create your own. LUTs are files that describe a color and tone mapping, usually in a standard (CUBE) format. They can be imported into a camera and used like a filter but they can be created and edited with a wider range of software and used at different points in your workflow, not just baked into JPEGs.

Fired their hosts? The company was a whisker away from closure, most people had to leave. They were bought out last minute, the lads had migrated to PetaPixel by then. Looks as they are doing their best to re-build. Not sure why you're so hostile.

@@ScreenFiends hostile? And yah, they fired their hosts, along with many others. And said it was closing. Re-building after telling everyone you're closing IS an odd move. Especially with low effort videos.

@@CameraJamsthe only reason they’re still here is because the camera community was vocal about it and Amazon changed their minds at the last second. Not sure where you’ve been but every personality spoke out about this; even Linus Sebastian who isn’t even a camera guy.
