that's true but you can also say that for a lot of designs too. One canvas can ask for something easy while another wants a lot of detail. I'm not saying cover ups are easy, because they aren't, but i do understand why they artists are tested on it. When you own a shop people will come in wanting a coverup. I think testing that skill for a "master" title is cool, if you're really that good you'd understand what does and doesn't work for a coverup. coverups will always be tricky but at least you can avoid some obvious mistakes.

But it's not like assignments are random. If you wanted to pick an easy tattoo then win the flash challenge.

I suppose the judges have to be more lenient towards the harder ones to make it more fair but I am not sure that is the case

Yeah well, judging subjective art is hard in of itself. Don’t get me wrong, as an artist (not tattoo but it’s the same idea) there are fundamentals in making something look pleasing to the eye, but there’s always personal bias in art. Art is not a definite math after all. Im rambling but basically what I’m saying is there’s going to be little inequities like that in this subject. It’s normal.

I see the dog as too dark. For example if u step away a few inches you prob see a black splotch. Very little white on the tattoo

Yeah it certainly wasn’t the greatest perfect animal tattoo, but I think it was definitely better than some I’ve seen. And lalo’s just looked, really really amateur and just, bad

The problem is that the tattoo will look like a big red blob in a few years. That's why even when doing realism there HAS to be outlines. It was a failing of technique, not necessarily aesthetics in the moment. There are multiple categories that these tattoos are graded on, just because it's good in o e area, it could be dogshit in another.

It's not "worst tattoos" , it's just the one that lost that challenge.

I’d rather them not have a canvas jury and them just blind judge a photo. That way if the canvas likes the tattoo they don’t have to hear the verbal carnage 😭

The problem is this show showcases really arbitrary rules that in real life, most clients don’t really give a shit about. In reality, all a tattoo artist needs in order to make a tattoo work is the consent and ideas of the client, and that’s it. You draw what the client wants and if the client likes it, that’s all you need. I mean, yeah there are standards any good artist has to follow like with any other job, but it’s truthfully not this convoluted in real life.

@@gothicMCRgirl I agree. Some rules on the show just feel weird. Like there's a few points where the canvas LOVED the tattoo but the judges didn't like it. I think there was a reaper tattoo episode and some of the judges hated that they used dark colors on a woman and its like- she wanted a reaper, what was the tattoo artist supposed to do. Some of the women artists on the show also had tons of dark tattoos on them too. Just weird rules like that that seem super weird. It works as a general rule I guess but the show kind of forgets about the clients for the most part, which is kind of a weird thing when it comes to tattoo culture/artistry. I like the show but yeah, if you ever go to a shop its not this complicated. Its normal to actually talk to the artist about what you do an don't like, and sometimes it even takes a bit of revisions and time. you do have to pay for that time but its completely normal for the artist and client to want a middle ground. In the end the artist is more worried about the client and making cool art, rather than "winning" or impressing a judge. Some of the tattoos on this show are legit bad but i'd say most of them are things any person would be proud to wear, even if just for an interesting memory. Another interesting thing is that reality tv also has a lot of behind the scenes stuff that happens. Its hard to prove without direct comments from people on the show but in other reality tv shows there's been proof of producers doing things to intentionally flair up a show. A possible example for this would be a producer telling a canvas that they can ask for any tattoo they want, and they will get it no matter what in hopes they would cause some conflict with their artist. Just some interesting differences in how tattoo artists are in real live VS the show.

@@gothicMCRgirl Additionally, this show loves bad tattoos that will not look good long-term. They claim to want longevity but criticise artists that don't make liberal use of white and tiny details. If this show had been honest, they would have shown the healed version. Maybe even tattoos from previous seasons. Almost any tattoo looks good when fresh.

Might be time to travel somewhere. There's a lot of good artists out there, you just have to find one you vibe with. I got fortunate in that there is an amazing one by me who does super clean black and gray (and is proficient in a bunch of styles). But if you're looking for creative, it's time to start searching instagram

I didn't know that, that's actually pretty sad. Here in germany pretty much all serious artists draw their own motives. You go in with an idea, talk about it, they draw it and talk it over with you till you're happy. Sure, there's better artists and worse but you usually look into them and their artstyle beforehand. I know plenty of artists who won't even tattoo something they haven't drawn themselves

Half a year isn’t bad good artist in my area are booked for a year and a half to 2 years but I agree with I’ve never had a tattoo artist draw and every time I go I give them a reference and I say make it your own I’m open to ideas and they just do the photo it’s frustrating

@@dirtysouth9222 yeah I know there out there, I need to find someone local though, traveling to try and and coordinate with an artist to get my work done sounds difficult. I already have one sleeve and a big back piece, I want to get a second sleeve and add to my first sleeve and add to my back and add along my chest but need everything to coordinate and that involves making 4-6 hour apts every week or two even months and trying to coordinate images and background and details, layering certain areas and scheduling appointments so that it’s a close together project and not random work done ever year that separates the work out separating the tattoos and ideas just wouldn’t work. I know of a decent artist now where I get all my work done, she is decently talented and has a steady hand and is good at shading and has strong outlining and she charges $120 an hour which is decent. every other shop I’ve ever been to butchered every tattoo I got and she’s been able to fix some but some aren’t fixable that scared the skin did terrible outlines and just colored everything solid black, had no ability to do detail or how to use darker shades to give contrast. The only good work I’ve seen locally has a tremendous wait period and because the area of Kansas they are located in has a shit ton of silver spoon babies that charge out ravenous amounts for their work and if you aren’t the child of some doctor, sports athlete and so on they will shove you off to the side. I went in that shop my second time with some rich brat named DJ use dad got filthy rich being shady as Fuxk and would just give this kid whatever he wanted whenever he wanted it, high school he drove a new car every month that costed more than 80k each time, when we got of age to ride motorcycles he was that rich brat that one day just had a Ducati but couldn’t ride, we got into guns and then all of a sudden he buys hundreds of thousands of dollars in guns but can’t shoot. His just that kid and the shop recognized that and immediately got him on their schedule. I despise greed and dis respect and will never give them business. So I’m stuck at the moment, I’m sure I’ll find someone or I’ll just end up finishing my work with the lady I got through now

Cutting out or muting his commentary in addition to cutting him out visually would make some clips unusable. I think they are already trying to have as little of his commentary as possible in the clips.
