I enjoyed a two night stay in the primitive campgrounds at Inks Lake State Park. In this video I cover every trail in the park, I try out some new gear, unveil my new camera for future videos, and show you the beautiful views, scenery, plants, and wildlife of Inks Lake State Park.

Hey Mike....a little late to the party here, but I stumbled across your Inks Lake video this morning. Thanks so much for sharing and congrats on the new camera. Very exciting!! I was born in Austin, but just developed an interest and the time to hike and camp. I'm actually going to Inks Lake for a day trip next week. Looking forward to exploring these trails.

I hear you have been to Inks Lake many time but I have never been on the trails. I'm going to have to check them out the next time I'm out there.

Nice new tent! This is the second Inks Lake trip report to pop up in my feed this week. Might be a sign I need to check it out.

Thanks! We cleared the spider webs for you if you hurry. It's a great park. A little crowded around the lake and trailheads but you can definitely find some quiet space.

Seems like kind of a ripoff as a one person tent: if you bought that at WalMart they'd call it at least a four person tent.

@@kd5nrh I guess it all depends on what you want to do in your tent, your own size, etc. On a different note, I never realized why most Texas backpackers don't backpack during the summer here until this one. It is FREAKING HOT! Just because we can get in the triple digits doesn't mean we have to. LOL!

@@JerryDugan lots and lots of water. Last June I backpacked the High Chisos for three days with a 45 pound pack. 25 of that was water. Getting up Laguna was a monster, but after that everything flattened out, and I finished my first 3L hydration pack just about a mile from my campsite. Crazy part was how many people I saw coming back down, carrying a single, empty 16-32oz bottle. How some of them made it more than a mile before realizing that was nowhere near enough water is a mystery.

@@kd5nrh so many people understand the need to hydrate and replenish electrolytes

Congratulations on the camera. I don't know much about them, but it looks nice. Sounds like your upgrading a lot of gear. You did a really good job on your editing. The new camera will make your videos even better. Looking forward to the DVSP video.

Thanks Cameron. I love the new camera but you definitely have the lighter weight option haha. I only started backpacking a couple years ago, so still dialing gear in and replacing all the stuff I bought when I didn't know I wanted to go ultralight. I've dropped my base weight from 20+ lbs to 10 lbs (minus camera gear). It quickly became an obsession :P

You went with the Nemo!! Good choice!! They are expensive, but the UGQ quilt solved my cold sleeping issues. Until then, I struggled to find what worked. I chose to get an overstuffed foot box.... that seemed to really be the key for me.

I wasn't sure about it at first, but it's growing on me. It'll be back out on trail with me next week.

Hey so on those primitive sites you can’t use a propane flame either ??? Or a portable bbq grill ???

I've been asked this question a few times. I have no idea. Good question for a park ranger.

Hey Mike, how long did it take you to hike to E from the parking lot?
@smithmutexas
@smithmutexas 2 года назад
If I remember right, E is the primitive sites. Takes only 30-45 min from the parking lot. You cross a road about 3/4 of the way. I've seen people park there to have a shorter hike in, but I don't think you can park there over night.

Is cooking food allowed at the primitive camp? I know there is no ground fires but are camping propane stoves permitted?
@smithmutexas
@smithmutexas 2 года назад
Canister stoves and small propane stoves are almost always allowed anywhere in TX. I wouldn't take a large propane fire pit out there, which might not be allowed.
@bradybettis3732

@@smithmutexas yeah I have a small camping stove I will probably bring. Is the wall to the campsites pretty rough? I know it’s only a little over a mile but just if you are carrying a decent load I wasn’t sure.
