Clipping and Masking are important tools in Inkscape’s arsenal, giving you the ability to create some exceptional artwork. Clipping and masking are very similar - both allow you to hide part of an object, path, group or image, but you can also vary an objects transparency when using masks.
In this tutorial, I show you how to use both features and demonstrate how you can create realistic shading, highlights, and reflections to take your artwork and graphic designs to the next level.
In this tutorial, I’m using the latest version of Inkscape - Inkscape 1.1

Since making this video, I have discovered a much better way to soften a clipped edge. Instead of putting the clipped object on it's own layer and blurring the layer, you can group the object (on it's own) then blur the group. This allows you to place it or group it just like any other object 👍

I'm thinking that masks should never be in the shape of the underlying object, otherwise we have a double transparency on edges. The first anti aliasing transparency of edges from the underlying object, and the second one from the mask. So either we have to make the underlying object a rectangle, or the mask should be a rectangle.
@CreateForFree
@CreateForFree Год назад
I think anti aliasing is applied to the image as a whole when rendered to smooth pixelated edges, I'm not sure how noticeable it would be but it's a good point, Thanks

Clipping doesn't work for me in 1.2. When I draw a shape over my image, it doesn't have a colour like yours did - it's just transparent with an orange border. And selecting it and then setting clip does nothing at all.
@CreateForFree
@CreateForFree Год назад
The colour of the shape you draw over the top is just set by you, either in the fill and stroke dialog box or using the Swatch at the bottom (select the shape and click on a colour or hold shift and click on a colour to change the colour of the stroke) When you use it to clip, the shape you want to use as the clipping mask must be on top and you should have both the clipping shape and the object below selected - hold down shift to select multiple objects, then use set clip. Good luck!

Masking doesn't work for the reflection, I get either a white or a black square.
@CreateForFree

Try opening up a new document, create a simple shape like a circle. Then draw a rectangle over the top, give it a black to white gradient and go to Object - Mask - Set Mask. Your original shape should fade out at one side. Sometimes Inkscape has little glitches that are often isolated to a single document, if it works on the new document but not your original one, try selecting all the elements of your project from the original document (without the mask), copy them and paste them into the new document and then try applying a mask and hopefully it will work. If it doesn't work on either then you might want to uninstall Inscape and reinstall it - can upgrade to Inkscape 1.2 if you haven't already. Hopefully one of these will fix your problem.

So clear and concise! Thank you for such a helpful video. I especially appreciate that you contextualized masking in this way. I have watched other videos that showed how to do masking, but only in an abstract way, and I really couldn't understand when or why you would ever use it. But now I get it, thanks to you.

What is all these complication? Powerclip feature needs to be added to Inkscape ASAP. The only reason why I would have to go back to windows
@CreateForFree
@CreateForFree Год назад
There is a power clip LPE but you will probably find clip groups more useful, which allows you to clip a group of objects as well as adjust them without removing the clip.
@yuyutalks
@yuyutalks Год назад
@@CreateForFree then how do you add a solid color to the background of the clip?
@CreateForFree
@CreateForFree Год назад
@@yuyutalks Clip works on groups as well as individual paths, so you could just drag out a rectangle behind the other elements, group them and clip the whole lot in one go. alternatively, you could create a clip group which uses the colour of the path you convert into the clip group. Can't remember if I mentioned in the following video but you can right click on the clip group and use enter group to work inside the clipped area and double clip outside the clip group to exit it. Watch this video on Clip Groups and it will hopefully make more sense. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ht4wdce0ra4.html

How do you edit an object once it is clipped inside another object after deselecting it?
@CreateForFree
@CreateForFree 2 года назад
If you are using Object - Clip - Set to clip your objects then you can use Object - Clip - Release Clip to undo the clip, you can then make the adjustments and clip it again. Alternatively you can use clip groups which allow you to adjust objects within the clip group without the need to release the clip. I demonstrate this in the following videos. In this video I explain clip groups: Clip Groups | Water Colour Filter | Inkscape - Flower Border ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ht4wdce0ra4.html and in this one I use clip groups in Inkscape 1.2 with the new Layers and Objects dialog box: Inkscape 1.2 Trace Bitmap ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Vbb2qc9I9xg.html I also demonstrate how you can select objects in the L&O dialog box.

I have drawn a circle and I have an image. I want to cut out of the circle. How would I do that? Would that be a reverse clip?
@CreateForFree
@CreateForFree 2 года назад
If you want to clip the image to the shape of a circle, then with the circle on top - select both and use 'Set Clip'. If you want to cut the circle out of the picture then you would use 'Set Inverse Clip', that said I just tried it in Inskscape 1.2 and it just did the same as 'Set Clip' ?? If this is happening to you, you could position your circle where you want to cut out the hole then draw a rectangle over the whole lot. Lower it down so it is under the circle, then select both the circle and the rectangle and go to Path - Difference, this will cut the circle out of the rectangle. Then select the rectangle and the image and use 'Object - Clip - Set Clip' and it should cut the circle out of your image.

My goal is to cut out the Black shape of the State of New York from the Orange circle while retaining the Black State of New York shape. Group those and remove the circle/ shape combination from a Black Triangle. Thus all will be on the same level. In the finale it would become a decal. I think you would see what I am envisioning if I could transmit a .jpg of it as it stands right now.

Am I missing something, or is the clipping feature kind of redundant with masking? The only difference is that clipping doesn't care about the color of the object being used to clip, isn't it?
@CreateForFree
@CreateForFree 2 года назад
That's right, you can clip with a mask but it's more work. 9 times out if 10 I just want to crop things to the right shape, so clipping is quick and easy

@@CreateForFree I do use wine but hardly use it to run Windows software as I am not needing it on my potato laptop. wine has quite improved what with valve and proton improving upon it for their steam deck console. there are quite a few apps that are a UI for wine such as Bottles and playonlinux etc. there's also a paid program from codemasters or something that is an excellent program for running windows apps on Linux and Mac.
