INKTOBER HACK: How to refill your Pentel Color Brush Pen yourself with waterproof ink

One of my Pentel Color brush pens ran out of ink, and rather than throwing it out or buying a refill, I decided to try to refill it myself. I love the water based ink that's inside the brush, it's water soluble, and I can do nice wash effects with it. But since I already have 2 others identical pens, I decided to try a waterproof ink, and see if it works as well, without clogging the pen. I used the Platinum Carbon ink which is often used with fountain pens.
UPDATE 1: It's been about 2 weeks, and the ink is still flowing nicely, without clogging the pen.
UPDATE 2: It's now June 2019 and the ink still works very well. It didn't dry out, didn't clog the pen, and is flowing like on the first day.
If you like my art, here's where you can purchase it: sandrinesgalle...
If you'd like to send me some supplies to try out, please, don't hesitate. I'd be happy to make a review video.
Here's where you can find the supplies from the video:
- Pentel Color brush pen in black: amzn.to/2y2xCEk
- Platinum Carbon black ink: amzn.to/2CzOjLr
Please, note that these are Amazon affiliate links, and if you decide to purchase any of these items through them, you will help support this channel at no additional cost to you, which is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Using a blunt needle will allow the air to escape so you don't get that messy bubble when you refill the cartridge.

Thank you so much!!!!!! The Pentel cartridges are stupidly priced where I live, so i bought a really fine ink. It has 4 times the capacity for a bit more than one cartridge. As i said, it's really liquidy, i hope it won't block the brush. Thanks again!

You can take the brush end and push it and it will pop back and come out of the other open end of the barrel. And the brush assembly has a cap that comes off so you can flush it all out

That's a great idea! Is it just as opaque as the original white ink? I love the white brush pen, but it gets clogged so easily.

Great tutorial video. With the tube with only one opening, you might try using your syringe to force water into the tube (facing away from you) to help get some of the ink residue trapped at the bottom out. I do this with my fountain pen ink cartridges to clean them out (of course those are smaller and flush out fairly quickly). Remember, inky hands are happy hands.

You can buy blunt needle syringes on Amazon, quite cheap. The needle enters the body of the cartridge and stopes the bubble splat effect.

Take out the flow regulator but keep the cap of the barrel and use rotring ink and enjoy. Keep it stored upright though as without the ink flow regulator it flows much more
@Sandrinesgallery
@Sandrinesgallery 4 года назад
Thank you for the tip. I like the Rotring ink, I use it with a Rotring fountain pen. Is it thicker than the original one from the Pentel pen? Is that why you suggest removing the flow regulator? So far, with the Platinum Carbon Ink, the flow is lovely WITH the regulator. I think the ink is a bit thinner. AND, it's waterproof.
@theartyone
@theartyone 4 года назад
@@Sandrinesgallery it is thicker. I didn't think the rotring ink would work in any fountain pens as it's too thick. Rotring would be cheaper than the Platinum Carbon ink

Thanks for sharing, how do you store brush pens? I store mine in a container with the bristles up. Always wondered if this was a good ides. Kinda like how the best way to store markers is level, or flat (not in container). Thanks again

@Sandrinesgallery
@Sandrinesgallery 3 года назад
Sorry for the late reply. I don't know about the Kuretake Sumi ink. You need to make sure it's not going to clog the pen. So far I only tried the Platinum Carbon ink and it works very well. I've refilled it a couple of times and still use it to this day. I know that any ink with shellac in it wouldn't be recommended. That said, Kuretake Sumi Ink is water based pingment ink so it might work. If I had an extra empty brush pen, I would definitely try.

There's no best ink, it depends on your preference. I like the Platinum Carbon ink because it flows very nicely, is waterproof and I haven't had any problems with clogging the bristles. I think as long as you use an ink that doesn't have any shellac, like some India inks might have, you should be fine.
