One of the best videos for beginners! I can't express how important staying low is (and bending knees). One more great tip is "STOP LOOKING AT YOUR FEET"!

You have the best most unique voice-over/narration I have heard in a long time!!! Your words show humour and a kind heart, but your voice is like a deadly assassin! Hah! And I hope to learn to skate from your videos once I pick up my first set of skates tomorrow eve. Thanks dude!

@@yongcu88 I do! And I very much learned to skate! Met some dude from Romania literally the day I bought the skates and all we did was work and skate for like 3 months straight. Was doing small jumps, slalom-type moves and beginning to skate backwards. Eventually I found work as an apprentice electrician and, self-employed in my 30's now, can't risk an injury. But I watched this guy a couple weeks ago for nostalgia. He's fantastic!

I'm 48 and I love skating, I had my first skating skill on ice during my college days then stopped when I started working. I bought my first roller blades when I was 41 and learned only the striding, when I see your video I learned how to crossover, to do backwards skating in just few days of practice, now I'm trying to practice some I've seen on your video. Thanks for your video tutorial Bill..

i'm 33 and bought my first pair of inline skates at Sportcheck yorkdale. they got 30% off right now on everything. Just did my 2nd practice yesterday and now i can balance. i practiced a lot on the grass and i hold my knees (to keep myself bent) when i glide to a V shape and so far it works. just like snowboarding, we will fall a lot before we get it! keep safe and be positive!

Hey, this is some great stuff to try out! I switched to Seba's last summer and since there's no heel brake on them, they made me realise how shitty of a skater I really am. It feels like I'm forever stuck in the "okay, I can go forwards, turn and slightly control my speed, but that's it" stage, try anything new (including stops) and I'll just fall over - plus, I had no idea how to improve since there's nothing to practice really if either you fall, or try to avoid falling (99% of time). I love your style and I'm really happy I found your videos!
@BillStoppard
@BillStoppard 9 лет назад
Thanks M, RU-vid instructionals have always helped me in numerous areas, very happy to hear you are doing the same. It sounds like your desire to skate extraordinarily well will be met thanks to your specific target setting. It was a big step when I ditched my heel barake; nice advancement!
@rainymornings
@rainymornings 9 лет назад
PintoPonyProductions Haha that's great to hear, B! I thought it was stupid, going without heel brake, because it forces me to always go at a pretty slow pace as I have no way of stopping in case people or cars suddenly make unexpected moves. As for trying to get my strides and accelerations really powerful and doing REAL stops, I started playing hockey, since I noticed hockey players are generally also great on rollers. It's really not a big thing in my country but I'm starting to love the sport so much that I focus on teamplay rather than my skating abilities, I think that as a crazy quick skater, you'd love it too, the quick moves and transitions and all!

I'm gonna answer this and say absolutely. The two are ridiculously similar. It's almost safe to say that if u are a good inline skater then you will be a good ice skater as well even if you have never tried it. The first time I I've skates I was very good at it simply because I had been inline skating for years. Just took a couple of minor adjustments to the feel of skating ice and I was ripping it up.

Hey Bill! I've been ice skating regularly for about 5 months and one problem that frustrates me still is how to get that "springiness" you were talking about in your crossovers. I can do forward crossovers fine but they don't look nearly as quick, powerful, or aggressive as yours. I also find that if I try to just do consecutive crossovers really quickly I tend to lost my balance - this is kind of a recurring problem in which I can skate fine when I go really slow, but attaining even decent speed just throws me off balance when I anything more than skating forwards. I would really appreciate a tutorial specifically for improving crossovers, and any other tips that would help me become a better skater. :)
