Inner Axle Seals - why replace them? - Roothy

I always get a kick out of visiting my mates at Terrain tamer HQ in Melbourne as there is always something new that they are working on and they have the knowledge and experience to back up their ideas.
This time I got chatting with Brent Hutchinson the General Manager about a 60 Series Landcruiser they were doing suspension and a front end rebuild on. The main issue that they had found was the wear on the axles caused by the inner axle seals hardening over time. Now to your average bush mechanic the axels would have probably looked OK to go straight back in, but as Brent pointed out the wear on the axle caused by the seal will allow grease to escape and contaminants like water and grit to get into the running gear.
This is why the front end bearing kits from Terrain Tamer are so good, not only do they use Koyo Bearings which is what Toyota themselves use, but they also come with a complete set of seals, and gaskets. So next time you or your mechanic are pulling your front end apart, make sure that you replace the inner axle seal as well as the bearings, the extra cost is minor and it could save you having to replace all of the axles further down the track.

Landcruisers are prone for those seals to wear and leak and thus cause diff fluid to leak into the hubs and wash away the CV joint and wheel bearing grease. An easy way to tell if those seals are knackered, is to look for diff fluid leaking from the spindle.

I replaced mine on the rear axle just the other day, got the full terrain tamer kit. Great gear. Btw thanks Roothy for answering my question about the 2H turbo on the podcast last week!

mhacknix mine took about that not including getting the axle refaced, I reckon a workshop could do it faster

Max Weidenbach Toyota book time is 6 hours. To do the job PROPERLY, disassemble, clean CV joints and/or replace, replace seals (felts, rubbers etc), new trunnion bearings and setting preload, wheel bearings clean, re-pack & adjust, is not a 5 minute job. I've done many of these and regardless of time, I still charge the customer 6 hours. People can sit back and say i can do it in 2 hours, but they're doing a half arsed job at best. Nissans are a different set up, so it's stupid to compare. Keyboard/home taught mechanics are dickheads.

Jesus On 2 Wheels I'm not saying it's an easy job. I had another bloke who knew what he was doing with me which sped it up, otherwise it would have taken me another two hours I reckon. I was saying a workshop could do it faster, never said they should

Unfortunately most mechanical shops nowadays don't even check diff or gearbox oils during a service let alone know how to properly change an inner axle seal.
@landcruisertroopytouringan2166
Aanndd check your spindle bush/bearing! Because if that is worn it allows moment, and your CV and axles won’t run true, causing the seal to be damaged and/or groove to form.

The real problem is diff oil leaking into the cv joint & wheel bearings, diluting the grease. Need to check the spindle bush to make sure the cv isn’t flopping around & stuffing the seal

Both the fronts done on my 70 in the UK this year, along with king pin bearings and axle bearings. (They were bad!) In the UK go for Toyota seals only. We don't have the luxury of Terain Tamer.

I'm looking for a link for that front wheel bearing adapter tool for greasing up bearings on a hzj80 series..
