I've had most of these since the 80's. The first one (yellow), you're supposed to put your hair in a ponytail first and then add the wire fabric to the ponytail to roll it and secure. Same with the expandable grid/clamp. I still have mine all these years later and they still work perfectly. ♡
I was gonna say....none of those are new to me, I have seen them since the 80s, and still had my black velvet bun wire thing she has in yellow until 2010 when I moved and lost it somewhere. So useful I do believe I shall make some.
@@tinaw.5538 I also know some of these accessories from my youth, for example the Topsy Tail Ponytails. It all seems to be coming back. Good idea to make this black velvet bun by yourself.
I have a much thinner version of the yellow one from the 90s. It's textured like velvet only very thin. It holds my super slick fine hair all day at an office job. I like the idea of fancying it up with a much higher quality of ribbon.
I've used fuzzy pipe cleaners as bun tools for my hair. Simply fold the pipe cleaner in half, twist the ends, and you have your basic bun making tool where you slide your hair in the middle. It doesn't always work, but when it does, it is really cute.
They had that first tool in the 90’s but it was made of velvet material and had a slightly different shape. Almost pear shaped at the ends with the middle being thinner. It was far better quality back then. It worked well with my thick curly hair when I was a child. I seam to recall you started much lower in the hair, almost at the end, then you would start to twist.
I was just wondering what it used to be called! When I had long hair I wanted one cuz my mom could not do buns, but nope and I decided throughout the years to cut it shorter. I only grew it back out during the pandemic.
The first one works. I bought these. My heart is only about an inch or so shorter. I didn’t do the 360 degree initial flip. I just pulled it down (I had my pony tail higher) and then rolled my hair round it and twisted. It holds very well and is very comfortable. I agree with the fabrics. If someone did this with really good quality fabric it’d be great.
The bird's nest one is actually great. I wore it all day and fell asleep with it and it was still in my hair. It works better than a hair elastic. I don't think you gave it a chance. Great for pony tales and buns no matter how much hair you put in it.
The first one is amazing if it's comfy enough to sleep in. I do a similar thing just using a sock to wrap my hair on for the night. My hair is super fine and always tangles up and falls in all kinds of weird ways when i leave it open for the night and I don't like the wave patterns braids leave. With wrapping it up it's all smooth and falls well the next day PLUS you get a nice soft curl.
The last one works really good, of you put the hair together in a ponytail with an elastic around it. Then you use that item to create little buns. With the clip to close it holds perfectly.
#1: if you get a real good quality one of these they’re actually a really great product! I’ve have several over the years and loved them even with my kinky curly thick hair! 🥰
The expandable one is for a bun... it goes over the bun with an elastic... its more of a decoration... I absolutely love every video you do... love your gorgeous family and can't wait for the new addition to get here...🥰🥰
Ah, that makes sense! Would probably look pretty, too! I also thought, it might be good for tying back curly hair. Since you want to wrangle and compress that as little as possible, to avoid frizz and messing with the curl pattern.
SOME of these I could see working in more naturally textured hair, like curl patterns in the 3 and 4 range. Like the drawstring scrunchy, I'd use that to hold my hair back but not crush it. I have 2c waves to 3c curls (various parts of the head).
100%. The bird's-nest one is amazing in curly hair; minimal damage to curls and holds perfectly. It cannot hold my hair when it's straight but with curls, it does not move. I use it to put my hair in a high pony at the gym. I can do half-up and buns without a problem (when I'm rocking my fine 2c/3a curls). It's my favorite hair clip.
The wire ones are actually amazing, the ones you got are terrible quality. I had the first one in elementary school, but it was made of foam. It was literally the only way I could make a bun out of my hair without mom's help. I still miss it tho😂
I have the foam ones in 4 sizes. I can’t seem to get them to work. I have long hair that’s thick, but not dense due to hormone related hair loss. The Deft works fine for me, but I wish the the foam worked.
That plastic expander one, I used to have some years ago. I had a smaller one that was pretty good if you have a high little ballerina bun in your hair and you put it over that. That's pretty much what these are for and what they work best for.
My daughter had one of those opening and contracting things when she had layered hair and had a bun for dance would put it over it instead on loads of grips for all the little sticky out buts and it looked really cute and held well. I don’t think you use it alone
The pink scrunchi is meant to be wrapped around like a typical hair tie. The draw string of to make it bigger or smaller depending on how many times you want to wrap it around
The first one and the black and blue one, if you leave it in for a while it curls your hair without heat, I put a bun maker in my hair at night and wake up to curly hair Try it like that
The first one you show, if a good quality, is just amazing. I had it as a teen, with very long hair. I never made your first twist, you can start with a pony tail if needed. If you do on damp hair at night and sleep with it, hair is curly the next day!
I’m wondering if that pink scrunchy would work better if you tied it off once in place to hold your hair and not just pull it closed, it’s only natural for the thing to come out if it’s not tied, those other things that you were putting your hair through have been around for years and work better if your hair is already in a ponytail and then roll it up into a bun. I enjoy watching your hair tutorials and trying different hair tools rather than your makeup videos. Jackie has beautiful hair and it’s always lovely to see her on your channel. Cheers from Queensland Australia 🇦🇺💖
I used to curl my hair EVERY single night for 8th & 9th grade with the first one she used. They gave me beautiful curls in less than an hour but my hair is so straight I would sleep with them each night & each morning I had beautiful voluminous curls in the morning :) They weren’t uncomfortable to sleep on in felt like sleeping with a bun (x Mine are longer, they’re wired & have more fabric. I bought them at a swap meet in LA for $5 or $6? Can’t find them anymore but still have 4 of them in great condition :)
I had this one in the 90's and it was so easy to use. I worked at the office and this helped my hair looking more neat. It was a lot smaller and the fabric was soft. Excellent idea!
None of these are innovative they're all from late 80's early 90's and unfortunately most of them are bing used wrong. Most need ponytails or buns first as that's what they're designed for. I'd actually really like to see this redone using them correctly
This video is helpful to remind those making products that they need to include instructions. There are instructions on shampoo bottles... for a good reason.
My mom used to have a gadget like that 1st one (as well as the one that has the ribbons - but without the ribbon). I used to help her with it every day. Even back then, it was made way better than what you bought. It was a velvety material and lasted years.
I just got those same first ones yesterday! Mine are a six pack of floral prints. I was disappointed by the quality too but as long as I start with a ponytail they do make nice smooth buns with a cute sort of "bow" once you twist it. ☺️
#3 has been in use for a long time. I remember seeing them as a kid. Mostly they're used for buns, but you don't punch the bun all the way through the hole. I think the one you tried is a bit different design, but the concept is the same.
Thank you. I feel much better about myself after watching this. All this time I thought it was just me who couldn't get these hair accessories to work!
The first one would have been AMAZING for my hair when it was knee length, that is of course if it came in a much longer length. The second one makes sense because you keep the scrunched look much better than typical scrunches once they’re wound around your ponytail tight enough to not slip off, even with a hair tie to hold the pony tail tight. The third I always thought would be pretty useless when I’ve seen them in stores. The fourth one I almost bought for my 6 year old before she decided she wanted her hair cut off for her 6th birthday. The fifth would likely be good for little girls if you ONLY pull it down about halfway before rolling into a bun instead of pulling it all the way to the end like the instructions said.
The last one (the small silicone ones with a slit) I used those as a child: they’re meant for small buns, that’s why they don’t have nearly the same size as the first one. Maybe small space buns made from just a section of hair.
I have the expandable bird nest ones and love them. Of course I have thick, wavy/curly hair. Thing stays in right where I put it, high or low pony tail.
the draw string can be a great thing for people with sensitive scalp or for people with disabilities that don't allow them for keeping their hands up for a long time. they can just slip it on and pull and there they go. as a bonus, it can be undone just as easily, which is a great improvement from some scrunchies that you have to untwist first otherwise they don't go down at all. even my hands hurt from those sometimes. but as for the rest - naaaah. useless as you said. i will just keep my hairsticks for buns, thank you very much
Thanks for this and thanks for all the comments, none of these will work on my fine slick hair. Guess I'll stick with the one I bought in the 90s nicer than the first one.
Omg!! The expandable one is almost exactly like one my mother had from the 1950s but hers was made of metal. I remember playing with it as a small child!❤️❤️❤️❤️
Great video and I am so glad you reviewed that first cloth bun maker bc I just got it in and was just as disappointed! Oh and on the expandable bird's nest holder, I have a tip! I hot some over the summer and love them! They're usually much more comfy than regular elastics and are pretty secure especially if you give it a little twist as you are closing it. That way it closes fully. I have noticed you have to be careful not to stretch it out too far otherwise it can make one of the little hinges pop off. Pretty easy to fix by just popping it back on.
I have all of these except the last one. I wish I had seen this video before spending money on these. She's absolutely right about these hair accessories!
So my mother in law gave me some of the deft bun maker things… all I typed in on the search bar was rectangle hair accessories and something told me Malibu has def done this and low and behold here she is!
For the first one, I think either using a hair band in a ponytail to help hold up the gathered hair or maybe using bobby pins for keeping the bun in place could work. Also, perhaps the tightness or doing a reverse direction of twisting at the end might help. As for the second one, I'd definitely use a hairband and use the extra string to tie it on top of the first layer of hairband. Thank you for sharing this review! 😊👍
Your hair is gorgeous!! ♥️ My thick curly hair would never work with these, I’ve wasted so much money 💰 on so many of these & they don’t work!! The ADS are lies, especially the Pony-O!! But Thank you for putting them to the test…
I bought the first one too and I think it would be much better if they used thicker wire. The flimsy wire just doesn't hold the hair very well. Cute idea... probably could make one much higher quality.
I bought this also recently, it pulls my curly hair. It feels weird, I didn't like it. For the first item you did. I don't recommend purchasing this anywhere. But I found useful for my curtains to stay in place instead 🤷🏻♀️
You are pure entertainment! Thanks for the laughs so early on a Monday morning! (Our country is 6 hours ahead of EST) I am subscribing because I enjoy your presentation and who knows, there might sometimes be a useful item to consider!
Exactly why I designed my product that actually works! I went thru all of that trying to do my hair and so many others. Thank goodness I learned how to do CADCAM so I got mine just the way it needed to be.
The scrunchie with the string may not leave the bump in your hair from tight ones ..so can throw it up and still look good of gonna put it back down and go out kinda like the twist technique
I have some of the Deft bun makers (the first product). They’re cute, but once I put one in, it looks like I’m wearing a big bow. Mine are the same size as the yellow one.
I would like to see some good hair ties and accessories for someone with hair like mine. I’ve got 5 feet of hair and there’s so much I can do with it, however the hair ties, clips, and whatever else I’ve found just isn’t strong enough to deal with my hair
The drawstring scrunchie would be really useful for brushing teeth or eating with curls - to just move your hair from your face, but not damage the curls.
Omg, nothing here is literally innovative) most of this things we had in Ukraine like 20 years ago, in good quality and it worked) nostalgic) thanks for a good video))
They were all meh, I wouldn't buy any of them except for the 3rd one.I bought those back in the 80's for my daughter when she was in high school and she made some really good hairstyles. Thanks for sharing, I love your hair tutorials!!!
The space bun one is meant to be used on hair that’s already in a ponytail. So, put your hair in two ponytails where you want your space bun to be and then do it. 😄👍🏻
